THEORY

Process:
A mixture of ammonia and water at 143.6 oC and 1724 kPa containing 80 wt% ammonia is
passed through a condenser at a flow rate of 4536 kgmole/hr. Heat is removed at a rate of 1700
kW. The pressure at the outlet stream is then reduced to 1034 kPa by using a valve. The mixture
is then fed into a flash vessel to separate the vapor and liquid.

In HYSYS, condenser is defined as a cooler. The inlet stream was cooled to the required
outlet conditions. The purpose of the condenser or this cooler is to determine the energy required
to cool a process stream.
In HYSYS, flash vessel is defined as separator. The purpose is to allow multiple feeds
and produces vapor and liquid at product stream. The separator will be divided the vessel
contents into its vapor and liquid phases.
The direction of flow through a valve is dependent on the pressure of the surrounding
unit operations. Total valve pressure drop must be referred to the total pressure difference
between the inlet and outlet pressure stream. We required a valve because we need to reduce the
pressure from 1724 kPa to 1034 kPa.

PURPOSE OF EQUIPMENT
In this lab, we use condenser and flash vessel. The purpose of condenser is to determine the
energy required to cool a process stream, whereas flash vessel is to allow multiple feeds and
produces vapor and liquid at product stream.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this lab is conducted is to understand the usage of condenser, valve
and separation process. Compositions of water and ammonia are an important element so that we
have to ensure that they are correct in order to get the desired results. For this lab the process

give us the value of pressure, value of pressure that need to be reduced, flow rate, energy
and compostion of ammonia.
