Field practice is a program from study program of Aeronautics. Field practice is conducted in
fifth semester. In field practice we must apply our knowledge in school to industry. Field practice
is very useful for our experience, because in field practice there are knowledge that dont
explained in school.
In field practice, we must find the problem in industry and we must analyze this problem and
we must compare the activity in industry with regulation in aviation. we must be patient if we do
field practice. Dont let the industry disappoint with us and they can blame our institution
because our bad behavior.
Periodic of field practice is from 27 July until 14 October. In field practice we must maximize
this time, we must take the knowledge, document and other for our experience.
I very interested to do field practice in PT DI (Perusahaan Terbatas Dirgantara Indonesia) or
IAe (Indonesia Aerospace). PT DI is located in jl. Pajajaran 154, Bandung. PT DI is invented by
Nurtanio from his ambition to make own aircraft. Nurtanio Pringgo Adisuryo and Wiweko
Supomo is pioneer of aviation industry in Indoensia. In 1946, Nurtanio and friends make a
workshop under control of Komando Depot Perawatan Mayor Udara Nurtanio. In this workshop,
Indonesia can make the first aircraft that made in Indonesia. The name of aircraft is
SIKUMBANG.
After Indonesia independent from Netherladans. The growth of economy in Indonesia is very
good especially in Soeharto era. The growth of economy must comparable in growth of
technology. In Soekarno era, LAPIP (Lembaga Persiapan Industri Pesawat) is built in 16
December 1961. The task of LAPIP is to make aircraft and make spare part of aircraft.
In 21 March 1966, Nurtanio Pringgo Adisuryo is dead. After the death of Nurtanio Pringgo
Adisuryo, LAPIP is changed become LIPNUR (Lembaga Industri Pesawat Terbang Nurtanio).
LIPNUR have 500 personel. In 15-28 April 1976, according from act of notary no.15 PT.IPTN
is built in Jakarta. in 1976 the number of personnel only 500 employments. In 1983 the number
of personnel is 900 employments. In 1990 until 1997 the employments of IPTN is 16000
employments. In 2003 until now the number of employment is 4500 employments with the best
qualification. To improve the quality of IPTN, IPTN has training and education for its
employments. Beside that, IPTN has field practice program for students who want to see work
experience.
In 1987 IPTN has a relation work with General Dynamic for makin component F-16. IPTN
also has a relation work with Boeing for making component for Boeing 767 and 737. Now IPTN
is not only for developing of aircraft technology and research of aircraft technology but also do
business in aircraft industry. To achive this missions, IPTN makes its own aircraft, this aircraft
call N-250. N-250 has two engines and 50 passenger. N-250 is the first aircraft in its class that
use fly by wire.

Fly by wire is the system that the flight control use electrical system. This make pilot is not
tired. IPTN also has a project for making aircraft, but IPTN need a partner from another aircraft
company. IPTN has some aircraft with its partner. Its like NC-212, in developing of NC-212, the
partner of IPTN is Cassa. In developing of NBELL-412, the partner of IPTN is Bell Textron. In
developing of NAS-332, the partner of IPTN is Super Puma.
To improve tecnology and business, IPTN with New Media Development Organization Japan
build Nusantara Sistem International Company that this company build software. This company
is built in 1988.
IPTN try to expand for its products, especially in Amerika, IPTN has branch office in Seattle,
Amerikka. IPTN has developed rapidly in last 24 years. According that, IPTN is changed became
PT. Dirgantara Indonesia by President of Republic Indonesia, Abdurrahman Wahid in 2000. PT
DI is not only production of aircraft but also another business, but now this business is changed
become Directorate like :

The vision of PT Dirgantara Indonesia is to become world class in aviation industry that base
from technology and PT DI must compete in global market with the price quality.
PT Dirgantara Indonesia has several mission that can explained below :
1. Developing the business and always orientation at aspect of business and commercial
and can make product and service that has price quality.
2. Become a profit center in aviation industry especially in structure design , production
and maintenance for commercial interest.
3. Become a world class industry that can affiliate with other aviation industri.
My directorate when I do field practice is in Aircraft Services. Aircfat services is a
directorate that for servicing aircraft. Aircraft services is usually for heavy maintenance.
Example, if the aircraft has 5000 flight hour, this aircraft must be maintained by aircraft services.
There are steps how to service in aircraft services :
1. The costumers request to manager of MRO. In here there are contracts for
maintenance.
2. The aircraft is sent to hangar aircraft services.
3. The costumers send problems about their aircraft.
4. This problems is sent to PPC (Product, Planning and Control).
5. PPC make a task card. Task card is a step for maintenance, this task card is like
instruction for mechanic.

In aircraft services, I repair NBELL 412. The costumer of NBELL 412 is from TNI AD.
NBELL 412 is helicopter. It has 5000 flight hour and 5 years grounded. There are activities when
I do field practice in Aircraft Services. The description of activitiy in NBELL 412 is in below :
1. Cleaning and Inspection in NBELL 412
The first activity when I do field practice in aircraft services is cleaning and
inspection. Cleaning in aircraft is important activity but it very simple, because with
cleaning, we can inspect this aircraft. example, when we clean aircraft we can find a
crack or FOD. If we find it we report to inspector. The fluid that use for cleaning
aircraft is white spirit, white spirit is a fluid like MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone). White
spirit can clean black spot in aircraft.
If we want to clean with white spirit, dont let white spirit is exposed to
instrument.

2. Operational Check of Standby Attitude Indicator


Standby attitude indicator is an indicator that shows the attitude of the aircraft. I
will check voltage in this indicator. When I push button in turn on position, the
condition of indicator does not in operational condition. I and mechanic discuss
about this. After discussion, we decide to check switch of stand by attitude indicator
in overhead panel.
When I and mechanic check it with multimeter, circuit breaker has no voltage.
The mechanic deside to send this switch to repair it.

3. Operational check of Idle Stop


I and mechanic will check idle stop. Idle stop is the system that the function is to
turn off the engine. NBELL 412 use Pratt & Whitney engine. We can see the
instruction how to check idle step in maintenance manual NBELL 412 chapter 98
page 58. When we check idle stop, there is problem. The problem is in diode. Diode
has broken and we must replace it. We request new diode to PPC.
4. Checking approach map light
I and mechanic will check for approach map light. The function from this lamp is
for lighting for map. In NBELL 412 there is a map that is placed in right side of
pilot. The pilot need manual map in this helicopter. When we turn on the switch (the
switch is potentiometer switch), the lamp is not illuminate. When we check the lamp,
the lamp is in good condition. After that we remove the potentiometer and we see
that the problem is in potentiometer. The cable in potentiometer has broken. The
solustion we must use thermofit to connect the cable to potentiometer.

5. Installation of Starter Generator


I and mechanic will install starter generator. The function of starter generator is
to starter engine and it can become generator. There are two starter generator in
NBELL 412. There is problem in right position of starter generator. When we install
it, the terminal block touch fuel control unit, if it happen, it will cause corrosion. We
are discussing what the problem it is. After discussing we can conclude that the
mounting kit is not suitable in IPC (Ilustrated Part Catalogue).

In field practice program, I have some weakness when I do field practice. First of
all, my experience in maintenance of aircraft is very poor because an experience
cant be achieved in school, we must looking for experience around the world.
I have an advice for PT DI. Although the knowledge and experience of
mechanics are very good, but the safety behavior is not good. PT DI must improve
the safety system if PT DI want to become the world class industry.
I hope PT DI will become the wold class in aviation industry and I hope N-219
that developed by PT DI can fly around the world. Amin.
