4.6 Desilting Basin and Power Channel
To date, there have been no investigations performed in the vicinity of the proposed power channel and desiling basin.
As such, the selection of material properties and characteristics is based purely on the appreciation gained during the site visit, and engineering judgement.
Based on the nature of the site, it is expected that the majority of overburden will be gravely sands/ sandy gravels with
cobbles, possible up to the size of small boulders. The material is expected to have very little fines,
albeit some of the cultivated areas may have higher quality material.
The desilting basin is located predominantly on a cultivated terrace.
It is expected that this site will have a relatively high thickness of overburden due to the construction of the terrace.
It is also possible that the alignment of the river originally crossed the vicinity of the terrace and as such,
it is possible that bedrock is well below surface level. It is very difficult to assess the depth to foundation rock in
this region, however, for the tendering process, it is reasonable to assume that around half of the basin will be
excavated through moderately weathered to fresh rock.
The power channel will comprise a combination of cut and fill embankments. It is expected that the depth of
overburden along the channel will be much less than in the vicinity of the desilting basin.
12.1 General
A 3.05km long Power channel takes off immediately downstream of the desilting basin and terminates into forebay at the end of its run. The channel is of trapezoidal
section having a bed width of 14m and the side slopes of 1:2. Channel is designed for a flow of 616cumecs which includes the water requirement for overloading
condition. The bed slope of the power channel has been adopted as 1:11500 and a water depth of 10.21m

The entire length of the power channel is lined 150mm thick of M-20 grade. Pressure relief valve of 150mm dia has been provided at every 7.5m centre to centre at th
base width and at 6m centre to centre at the inclined face. In addition to the above a 150mm open ended perforated longitudinal drain and transverse drain have bee
provided. A 500mm dia PVC pipe has been provided at every 500m c/c from the base of the power channel to the end of embankment slope to flush the water from th
longitudinal and transverse drains.
A WBM Service road has been envisaged on both sides at top of the embankments
Details of the Power channel design are incorporated within drawing set D2000, D2001, D2002, D2003, D2010, D2011, D2021, D2022, D2023, and D2024.
12.2 Design Criteria
As stated in the Bid documents, the prescribed performance criteria for the Power channel are as follows:

Loss of water shall not be more than 0.6 m/sec per million m of wetted perimeter of lining as specified in CBIP Manual no. 171.

Settlement of Sediment the reduction in area due to siltation shall be lesser of 2% of cross-section area of channel within one year of its operation or as
specified in the BIS code or CBIP Manual 171.

The channel shall be capable of carrying of the design discharge plus 10% overloading with sufficient (minimum) free board. The discharge shall be measu
and recorded by Contractors at least two locations using current meters.

The design criteria for the power channel are as follows:

Channel lining shall be designed as per IS:3873

The channel shall be efficient in cross section and shall meet the guidelines given in IS: 10430, IS 4558, IS 9451

All earthworks shall be carried out as per IS:4701

Cross drainage shall be provided at each crossing with natural stream

Two lane concrete bridges shall be provided at the crossing.

Road on the top of the embankment shall be provided with WBM

12.3 Design Methodology
Site Investigations
The proposed additional investigations include:

Diamond cored holes to assess rock conditions along the desilting basin area

Modelling and Analysis

Hydraulic
A hydraulic model will be constructed to investigate the flow behaviour of the power channel.
Structural
The sides of the channel shall be at stable slope so that there is no earth pressure or any other pressure against the lining. The channel lining shall be able to withstan
the effect of velocity of water, rain, sunshine and chemical action of salts

In addition to the thickness of lining, a stability analysis for the earthern embankments shall be done. A thorough analysis for the built-up and excavated slopes shall
done so that it does not slide and shall be adequately and comprehensively protected by shortcrete, anchoring, pitching etc.
Detailing
Specifications, engineering drawings and where appropriate, shop drawings will be produced as part of the final design for all elements of this work, including
excavation, filling, embankments longitudinal and transverse drains, pressure relieve valve details etc.
12.4 Design Documentation
The following is a general list of design drawings that will be produced for the Power Channel:

Cross Sections of Power channel in Cutting and Filling

Embankment details
