Sandvik GET
mechanical lip system

Sandviks integrated bucket solutions

Sandvik GET mechanically attached lip shrouds provide

a quick-change innovative wear solution for underground
loaders. Many lip systems require a costly weld build to
the rear of the boss or even boss replacement to enable
effective shroud re-tensioning.
However, unlike conventional systems, Sandvik GETs
adjustable locking system can be re-tensioned easily
and safely to minimise the destructive lip peening often
experienced with loose fitting shrouds. This is achieved
simply by tightening the rear cap screw making the
placement of the boss much less critical and providing a
quick and cost-effective solution.

Sandvik introduces its total bucket concept for underground

LHDs and loaders.
Our integrated bucket ground engaging tool (GET) solutions
guarantee longer bucket life, reduced wear and lower whole-ofbucket costs.
Sandviks whole-of-bucket approach to the GET business,
provides bucket wear systems that increase bucket life,
delivering lower overall costs, and reducing costs per tonne of
material in underground mining operations.
In particular the focus has been on developing GET systems
for underground mining operations where there has been
a lack of R&D investment by existing GET suppliers over a
number of years.
While Sandviks GET systems are specifically designed to
meet the challenging requirements of hard rock underground
mining operations, they are also ideally suited to some surface
mining applications.
In addition, Sandviks GET systems are suited to a wide
range of OEM buckets and loading products not just
Sandvik LHDs.
Sandviks total bucket concept focuses on four key areas of
bucket GET:
1. Cast corners: By adding structural strength as well as high
wear protection to bucket corners, bucket life is significantly
extended. This area of the bucket is prone to cracking and
high wear exposure, limiting the life of the bucket shell
Sandvik GET systems provide consistent cost per tonne
savings by extending the operating cycle of the bucket.
2. Mechanical locking system: The hammerless design of
Sandviks mechanical locking system allows easy change
outs of individual shrouds. In addition, it enables easy retensioning of the shroud against the lip eliminating wear
in this area so that the shrouds can be changed out without
having to change the complete lip. This system increases the
life of the base lip again significantly reducing costs.
3. Heel shrouds: The use of Sandvik heel shrouds minimises
the exposure of the bottom of the bucket shell during the
loading cycle further prolonging bucket life, and reducing
costs.
4. Protector strips: Sandviks mechanically attached protector
strips with superior hardness offer increased protection for
the underside of the bucket, with short change out time and
no welding required for increased bucket life, reduced
downtime and lower costs.

Main features
Quicker and easier to change than existing underground
GET systems
Adjustable locking system reduces costly lip damage and
change out times
No welding required for change outs
Low-profile blade provides increased penetration
High strength, high hardness alloy provides high
resistance to wear.

Sandvik GET 50 mm Series 2 lip assembly details

Sandvik GET Series 2 half corner shrouds

Sandvik GETs half corner shrouds are a simple solution

when replacing worn corner shrouds on bucket edges.
Replacing worn corner shrouds with standard shrouds
disrupts the continuous cutting edge, which can result in:
Gouging during roadworks
Catching the corner shroud
Higher costs.
In contrast, Sandvik GET half corner shrouds maintain
a continuous cutting edge, improving performance and
reducing costs.

Example of a typical Sandvik GET 50 mm Series 2 lip assembly layout drawing. The Sandvik GET Series 2 mechanical GET system can be made to suit any width lip
in either 32 or 50 mm plate. Layout drawings can be supplied to assist in the fabrication of the lip assembly, ensuring correct alignment to the bucket. Lip assembly
layout drawings also list all required parts. The Sandvik GET 50 mm Series 2 offers two shroud alternatives: standard or heavy duty.
Corner shrouds usually wear out faster
than straight shrouds.

sandvik GET Series 2 lip shrouds removal procedures

This removal procedure is common for both Sandvik GET 32 mm and 50

mm Series 2 lip shrouds. Shrouds are ready to be changed when the wear
indicators become visible on the base of the shrouds.

To begin the removal process wash the shrouds to remove fines that remain
built up around the cap screw and pin assembly.

Insert pry bar into the cavity under the spacer (shown inset), then pry spacer
up and remove it from the shroud.

Remove the bolt plug from the rear of the cap screw. Then turn the cap screw
counter clockwise and remove the cap screw from the pin assembly.

Lever back the pin block until it hits the rear of the cavity.

Item 3

Item 4

When reusing the pin assembly it is recommended to replace the cap screw (Item 2).
Note: The piston and seal can also be replaced if required (Item 1).

Exploded view

The shroud can now be removed from the lip. Following removal, wash down
the lip using a power washer, ensuring the lip profile is clean and ready for
installation of the replacement shroud.

Before performing maintenance work all personnel should ensure they are wearing approved
personal protective equipment. Under NO circumstances should hardened hammers be used on
lip shrouds. If required, a brass-tipped hammer should be used.

Item 2

Sandvik Series 2 pin assembly

Insert a pry bar into the slot between the spacer and the pin block. Then push
the pin block forward to break the seal between them.

Using two pry bars lever out the pin block.

Sandvik GET

surface loader (ROM pad) applications
While originally designed for underground use, Sandvik
GETs Series 2 lip system is highly suitable for certain surface
applications.
Mine operators have found great success using this system on
wheel loaders working a ROM (run of mine) pad or stockpile
where points or teeth are not required. Such ROM pad loaders
have achieved excellent results and significant cost saving by using
Sandvik GETs Series 2 continuous edge lip system.
The main benefit of this lip system is its longer wearing
properties and ease of shroud change out.
The adjustable locking system allows the shrouds to be easily
and safely re-tensioned, minimising the destructive lip peening
often experienced with loose fitting shrouds.
This system also incorporates cast corners which add
structural strength as well as higher wear protection to the
bucket corners extending bucket life significantly.
In ROM pad work, this area of the bucket is typically prone
to cracking and high wear exposure, limiting the life of the
bucket shell.
Sandvik GETs series 2 system provides consistent cost per
tonne savings by extending the operating cycle of the bucket.
And in highly abrasive applications, Sandvik GETs
Series 2 system can be coupled with Sandvik GET heel shrouds
and either a weld-on profile bar or our recently developed
mechanically attached Protector Strip
Case study
Caterpillar 972 bucket fitted with Sandvik GET Series 2, heel
shrouds, profile bar and half arrow cheek guards.
Main features of this system include:
Quicker and easier to change than existing underground
GET systems
Adjustable locking system reduces costly lip damage and
change out times
Integral cast corners in high-stress zone
No welding required for change outs
Low-profile blade provides increased penetration
High strength, high hardness alloy provides high resistance
to wear.
Optional mechanically attached protector strips for increased
wear life.
The end result in this application was lower overall
operating costs, through increased GET and bucket life, reduced
downtime through faster GET change out, and reduced bucket
damage and repair requirements.
Talk to your Sandvik GET representative about the
advantages of using our Sandvik GET Series 2 system on your

Sandvik GET
Half Arrow weld-on lip system

Half Arrow weld-on lip system installation procedures

Sandvik GETs Half Arrow weld-on lip system for

continuous edge underground loaders has been specifically
designed to provide maximum penetration while
maximising the amount of available wear material.
With its low profile blade, the Sandvik Half Arrow
system provides excellent penetration, with longer wear life
than a bare lip.
The Sandvik Half Arrow weld-on lip system uses
straight half arrow edges along the length of the lip and in
this configuration is suitable for most digging conditions.
In extreme applications heavy-duty corner edges can
be added.
The Sandvik Half Arrow system provides more available
wear material than other lip systems, minimising the
amount of throwaway material.
This system is ideally suited for continuous edges on all
types of underground loaders.

Recommended welding processes and consumables for Sandvik GET

Traditional rounding off of a standard bucket lip is a major contributor
to lost production tonnes. This type of wear results in reduced
penetration and poor clean up. In addition, as the bucket wears down,
carrying capacity is significantly reduced, while the bucket can suffer
from fatigue as the plate gets thinner.

1. Pre-heat: 150C (302F), measured at least 76 mm (3 inches)

either side of the weld joint or the area being gouged.
2. Interpass temperature: 150-250C (302-482F),
maintained at least 76 mm (3 inches) either side of the weld
joint or the area being gouged.
3. Post-heat treatment: NOT REQUIRED
Allow the component to cool slowly, but do not quench.
