INTRODUCTION:
This Lighting Illumination Basis has been formulated as per IS-3646 (Code of Practice for
Interior Lighting). Only the Interior Illumination of Buildings / Structures / Conveyors covered
under the purview of the present scope of work is considered.
The fixtures chosen are all Industrial Grade. Taking into consideration the dusty ambience of the
interior of the Buildings / Structures / Conveyors a low set of Reflectance Factors (Ceiling
30%, Walls 30% and Floor 10%) have been chosen for calculation purpose except for the
MCC Building where Reflectance Factors of Ceiling - 70%, Walls 50% & Floor 20% have
considered.
The following are the Target Lux Levels and the Maintenance factors on the basis of which the
number of luminiares in various areas have been calculated:

The following sections of this document sections will provide a clearer picture as to how the
Interior Illumination of the various Buildings/Structures/ Conveyors has to be undertaken:

GENERAL GUIDELINES:
The source of power for Lighting will be the CHP MCC. There are two (2) nos. 4 Wire
100A MCCB Feeders in the MCC allocated for this purpose. These two feeders will feed
Power to two separate Lighting Distribution Board located in the MCC Room. There will
be a TPN Incoming Power Switch located in the Incoming portion of each Lighting
Distribution Board (along with a single set of three fuses and neutral link) for receiving
the power (via 3.5C PVC insulated cables) from MCC Feeder. Each Lighting Distribution
Board will in turn have a number of outgoing TPN Switch Fuse Feeders which will
distribute power (via 4C PVC insulated cables) to locally located Lighting Panels. The
Lighting Panels will have TPN (TP MCB with Neutral Link) incoming feeders and a
number of SP outgoing MCB Feeders distributed among the three phases. Each outgoing
SP MCB feeder will feed power (using PVC insulated wires running in G.S. conduits) to
a lighting circuit catering to (half of the) fixtures in a particular area. Refer sketch marked
Detail A in this regard for the general philosophy of lighting power distribution. The
purpose of segregating the lighting system into two separate sub-systems is to ensure that
a fault downstream to the MCC does not lead to total power outage in the illumination of
the entire Coal Handling Plant.
For every area, there will be at least two lighting circuits sourced from different MCBs
located on separate phases of the locally located Lighting Panel. Adjacent fixtures in a
particular area shall be fed power from two different phases as well as circuits.
For every lighting circuit sourced from outgoing SP MCB of a the Lighting Panel there
will be two wires one phase and one neutral running through the conduits.
SHT 2 OF 19
The load on each outgoing SP MCB feeder will be restricted to 2000W to ensure that in
case of fault in a particular lighting circuit power outage is restricted to only half the
fixtures (i.e. every alternate fixture) of a particular area only.
For each lighting circuit the main run will be of 2.5 sq. mm stranded copper PVC
insulated wire conforming to the specification given below. Sub-runs to individual
lighting fixtures will be of 1.5 sq. mm stranded copper wire of the same specification.
Wires for lighting circuits will be 440V Industrial Grade PVC Type-1 insulated (BS:
2746) with stranded electrolytic copper conductor. Conduits will be of 16 SWG thick
galvanised steel (IS -9537 Pt. I & II). Other installation accessories like bends, elbows,
suspension pipes, spacers, saddles and junction boxes will be of
galvanized steel
construction. Junction Boxes will be of 16 SWG sheet steel thickness. All screws, nuts,
bolts and other fixing hardware will be electrogalvanized or zinc-passivated.
Conduits shall be sized considering 40% occupancy of the cross-sectional area by the
wires running through it. However, minimum size of conduit shall be 20mm.
Wires will have insulation colours of red, blue, yellow & black for R, Y, B phases and
neutral respectively.
Splicing of wires will be permitted only in junction boxes. All spliced joints shall be
taped using PVC insulation tape.
Each conduit run will be supported by means of spacer & saddle at intervals of 1 metre.
A continuous run of 16 SWG bare G.I. ground conductor wire will be used for necessary
earth grounding. This wire shall run along the entire length of conduit from fixtures to
Lighting Panel and will have onward connection to station earthing network. The earth
wire will be fastened to the conduits at intervals of 1 metre.
SHT 3 OF 19
Fluorescent Fixtures should be aligned lengthwise along the length of a room. Refer to
sketch marked Detail B in this regard. The dimensional parameters indicated in the
sketch for the layout of fluorescent fixtures are valid for other fixtures also and should be
followed (to the extent possible taking into account the areas blocked by mechanical
equipment and also required for the maintenance of and access to such equipment) to
achieve a uniform lux level.
However, in cases, like Conveyor Galleries and along the travel of a Tripper, where the
target illumination area is long and narrow a staggered layout configuration is
recommended for Lighting Fixtures as shown is sketch marked Detail C.
