How The Application Works

1. Heavy Duty Systems Application Description

HOW THE APPLICATION WORKS

The Heavy Duty Systems Application is designed to be extremely easy to use. However, it is recommended
that you read through the Operator's Manual for the tester you are using to get a feel for the operation of the
tester.
Because the Electronic Control Units (ECUs) for each engine manufacturer work differently, the application
works differently with each vehicle make.

HEAVY DUTY VEHICLES

All heavy duty vehicles supported in the application utilize the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
standard J1708/J1587 for serial communication link and data messages. J1708 and J1587 are the SAE
standards for high-speed serial data link and data interchange between electronic control systems. This
allows the tester to display Data List data, Read DTCs, Clear DTCs, take a Snapshot of the data, and display
vehicle specific information. The tester gets data or DTCs by communicating with the various ECUs on the
J1708 communication bus.

DYNAMIC DATA LIST FUNCTION

The F0:Data List mode is dependent on which data parameters the heavy duty engine system ECU supports.
Although the application has several data list parameters defined for all engines, a specific engine may not
support all of them. In this case, the tester will dynamically build the data list from a list in the application
for all data parameters supported on a specific engine.

DTCS
All Mack VMAC controllers and later Detroit DDEC, Cummins, INTERACT, CELECT/CELECT Plus, and
Navistar ECUs output a PID (parameter identifier), a SID (subsystem identifier), and an FMI (failure mode
identifier). The PID or SID describes the system or component at fault. The FMI indicates the type of failure
with the particular system. In most cases, an OEM DTC or Fault Code/Flash Code may also be available.

THE TEST MODES

SELECTING THE TEST MODES

The tester makes selecting a test mode easy by displaying a list of tests (a test selection menu) that is unique
for the engine manufacturer, system, and engine model that you have selected. The menu also displays which
key is used to select each test mode.
The first three test modes are displayed as soon as the vehicle is selected. The Select Mode menu
automatically scrolls three test modes at a time onto the display every three seconds. After all of the menu
options have been displayed, the screen scrolls back to the first three options and the scrolling process
repeats. To stop the automatic scrolling, press either the u or d key. The menu may then be manually
changed by pressing either the u or d key.
To select a test mode, press the key listed to the left of the test mode on the menu. Once you have selected the
test mode, operation begins. To return to the test mode menu from a test mode, press the x key.
Regardless of which display is on the tester, any test mode can be selected at any time from the selection
menu.

5. Selecting and Operating The Test Modes

OPERATING THE TEST MODES

Detailed operating instructions for each test mode are provided on the following pages.

MODE F0: DATA LIST

The purpose of the Data List mode is to display diagnostic data parameters (PIDs) in a list format, as well as
user selected data parameter pairs. The data parameters in the data list are dependent on which data
parameters the control system(s) supports.
In Data List mode, the data list is ordered according to a preferred list. If a parameter is missing from the
preferred list, the previous or next parameter takes its place. This gives a data list that best resembles the
preferred list. Although the tester has many data list parameters defined for all engines, a specific engine
may not support all of them. As a result of this, the tester will dynamically build a data list from its list for
all parameters supported on a specific engine.
If a data parameter becomes available after the data list is already built, the data list will insert the new data
parameter. If the electronic controller stops transmitting a data parameter for some time, the data for that
data parameter will be invalid. In this case, the tester will display NO DATA for that data parameter
instead of the invalid data. Once the controller begins transmitting the data parameter regularly again, the
tester will resume displaying the data for that data parameter.

NOTE
Enhanced data for MTS 3100 or TechView data display is not available.

To select Data List mode, do the following:

1. Press ) to select DATA LIST from the Select Mode menu. A minimum of 12 seconds is required
before data is displayed. A progress screen is shown (in percent, %).
2. Select the data parameters to be displayed by scrolling through the parameters with the y and n
keys.
3. The displayed data may be printed if the tester is connected to a compatible printer. To print the data,
press *.
DATA LIST data can also be printed in a tabular format using the SCREEN PRINT feature. This is
enabled by pressing ^ for approximately 1 second until an RS232 SET-UP menu is displayed. Select
F0: PRINTER from the RS232 SET-UP menu. Press ! to enable the SCREEN PRINT function. Refer
to the tester Operator's Manual for more detail.

Viewing Data Parameters

In order to maximize the information that can be seen at one time the tester displays data parameters in pairs.
A typical pair of data parameters is shown in figure A below.
To see the other pre-programmed data pairs available for the engine type you've selected, press either the
y or n key. The y key will cause the tester to scroll forwards through the list of preprogrammed pairs. The n key will cause backwards scrolling. Holding either key will cause continuous
scrolling.
Appendix C contains descriptions of engine data parameters.
Remember, NO DATA means the tester has identified and requested the data parameter from the controller
but is not receiving the data parameter value back from the controller.

Create Your Own Data Pairs

You can create data parameter pairs different from the preprogrammed pairs. Any two parameters which can
be monitored for the engine type you selected can be made into a pair.
New data pairs are created simply by scrolling either the bottom or top display parameter, while the other
display parameter is fixed. Pressing ) causes the top display parameter to be fixed, which is indicated
with an asterisk (*) in the left column of the second line of the display, as shown in Figure A below. Pressing
! causes the bottom display parameter to be fixed, as shown in Figure B. To unfix the top parameter,
press !. Press ) to unfix the lower parameter. The tester won't allow both top and bottom parameters
to be fixed at the same time.
As an example, let's say you wish to create a pair with ENGINE SPEED and COOLANT TEMP. To do so,
scroll through the pre-programmed pairs with the y or n key until you find a pair with ENGINE
SPEED. Fix ENGINE SPEED by pressing ) if ENGINE SPEED is the top parameter, ! if it is the
bottom. Then scroll the other half of the display with either the y or n key until COOLANT TEMP
is displayed.

MODE F3: SNAPSHOT

The purpose of the SNAPSHOT test mode is to help you isolate an intermittent or transient problem by
storing data parameters before and/or after the problem occurs.
When the tester is operating in SNAPSHOT mode, it is constantly storing information about data
parameters and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). A time and position index for the stored information is
also saved.
The tester stores all of the Data List parameters and DTCs for the vehicle selected. When the memory is full,
the oldest (earliest) data collected is erased to make room for new information.
A TRIGGER tells the tester when to start holding data. You can specify a TRIGGER CONDITION and
TRIGGER POINT so the tester collects data that will be most useful in diagnosing the current problem.

Trigger Point
If F9:TRIG. POINT is selected from the SNAPSHOT OPTIONS menu, a trigger point selection menu is
displayed. Trigger Point allows you to specify which data to capture data that occurs before, after, or both
before and after the point at which the trigger occurs. If no trigger point is selected, the center trigger point
will be used and a similar number of data samples before and after the trigger will be saved. Trigger point is
fully explained in Step 5 on page 33.

Trigger Condition
The trigger condition defines the specific circumstances under which you want the trigger to occur. The
possible trigger conditions are:

ANY CODE: If any DTC is detected by the ECM, it will cause the trigger to occur.

SINGLE CODE: For Cummins PACE and DDEC II vehicles you can select a specific DTC that must be
detected before the trigger will occur. Step 4 on page 33 tells you how to enter the code. This option is
not available for other systems.

MANUAL TRIGGER: While operating the SNAPSHOT mode, you can always cause the trigger to
occur by pressing the (, e and x keys.

Once the trigger occurs, the tester will retain data according to which trigger point you have selected.

Printing Captured Data

You can print the captured data, providing a hard copy of any selected data sample. The Tech 1 printer is
required to support this print function. See Step 13.

Snapshot Operating Procedure:

Once a Snapshot has been saved, it will be retained in the tester memory
for at least 24 hours, or until:

NOTE

Another Snapshot is taken. This includes taking another Snapshot on

the same vehicle from a different MID.

A different application is entered, for example, the GM P/T application.

Entering another application on the cartridge will cause the tester to
clear the section of memory where a Snapshot is stored.

The operation of SNAPSHOT mode is divided into three phases: Setup (Step 1 to Step 5), Data Capture
(Step 6 to Step 9), and Data Display (Step 10 to Step 14).
Setup Phase
1. Select the SNAPSHOT mode from the Select Mode menu by pressing #.
2. The trigger condition and review data options are displayed in a self-scrolling SNAPSHOT OPTIONS
menu.
3. To select a trigger option, just press the Function Key displayed to the left of the desired trigger
condition. To replay previously captured data (if any), press #.
4. For Cummins PACE and DDEC II vehicles you can choose a specific ECM DTC for the trigger
condition as explained below. This option is not available for the later Mack VMAC, Cummins,
INTERACT, CELECT/Plus, DDEC III/IV, or Navistar systems. For these systems, a Snapshot can be
triggered on Any DTC.
When the tester screen displays SNAPSHOT MODE, ENTER ECM CODE:, xx, use numeric keys 0
- 9 to enter the two digit DTC number that you have selected, then press the e key. The tester
will continue to store data until the specified trouble code is detected, or until you press the x key.
If the code you enter does not exist for the engine type being tested, an INVALID CODE message will
be displayed and the code will have to be reentered.
5. In addition to a trigger condition selection, you have the option of selecting a trigger point. If you select
F9:TRIG. POINT from the SNAPSHOT OPTIONS menu, the following options will be displayed: F0:
BEGINNING, F1: CENTER, and F2: END. How Trigger Point works is explained below.
F0: BEGINNING: The trigger will be at the beginning of the captured data. After the trigger occurs, the
tester will continue to capture data until the memory is full, then the data will be displayed. If not enough
data samples have been collected to fill the tester memory (because the x key was pressed before
the tester memory was full), some data samples that were captured before the trigger point will also be
available for display.
F1: CENTER: If enough time has elapsed before and after the trigger point, a similar number of data
samples that occurred before and after the trigger point will be available for display. However, if the
trigger occurs at or near the start of the Data Capture phase, there will be fewer samples before the
trigger point available for display. Also, if the x key is pressed after the trigger occurs, but before
the tester memory is full, fewer data samples captured after the trigger point will be available for display.

Heavy Duty Systems

Page 33

Operating The Test Modes

5. Selecting and Operating The Test Modes

F2: END : Data that occurred before the trigger will be displayed. If the tester memory was not full when
the trigger occurred, some data samples captured after the trigger point will also be available for display.
After the Data Capture phase, you can scroll through all of the stored data for display. In the Data
Display phase (Step 10 to Step 14), data parameters are displayed in a manner identical to that of the
Data List mode. You can also specify the data sample you wish to display (Step 10 and Step 11). Both
Data List and Trouble Code information can be displayed for each captured data sample.

6. FINISHING UP

To get the most life out of your diagnostic tool, do the following:
1. Before powering down, clear any DTCs that may have been set during the course of troubleshooting
vehicle electronics.
2. Remove power to the tester by unplugging the cigarette lighter adapter, disconnect the battery cable (turn
power off for MTS 3100), and disconnect the DLC cable from the Data Link connector.
3. You may want to inspect the cable, connector, and cigarette lighter for any damage or corrosion.
4. Store the tester, cartridge, and cables in the storage case.

NOTE

If the tester should become dirty, you may clean it with mild detergent or
hand soap. Avoid using harsh solvents such as petroleum based cleaning
agents, such as Acetone, Benzene, Trichloroethylene, etc. Although the
tester is water resistant it is not waterproof, so be sure to thoroughly dry off
the tester prior to storage.

If you have been using a DLC Adapter during testing, be sure to remove the adapter from the DLC connector
and store it in your tester storage case.

(DTC) DESCRIPTIONS

Depending on the engine manufacturer and engine size that has been selected, a DTC may refer to several
different PIDs or SIDs. Be sure to check the entire list for an OEM DTC that occurs for more than one PID or
SID to ensure proper diagnosis.
Use the DTC numbers in the Cummins PACE and the DDEC II charts to enter a specific DTC as a trigger
when operating the tester in SNAPSHOT mode.
Always refer to the appropriate service manual for the vehicle being tested to obtain complete DTC
descriptions and repair procedures.

C. DATA LIST PARAMETER

DESCRIPTION

DESCRIPTOR FORMAT
Following is a description of every parameter that can be displayed for Heavy Duty applications. Included is
a listing of all the parameters available, a description of the parameter, the units, and the range of the analog
parameters and the states of discrete parameters.

DATA LIST PARAMETER DESCRIPTIONS

The Tech 1, Tech 1A and MTS 3100 are capable of displaying a wide variety of parameters in F0: DATA
LIST. The vehicle sends the information regarding the state of engine data as the ECM sees it and the tester
'translates' and displays this information in the form of parameters. This section describes those parameters.
There are two basic types of parameters: discrete and analog. Discrete parameters are 'bits' of information
and can be in only one of two distinct states (on/off, open/closed, etc.). Switches and solenoids are examples
of discrete parameters. Analog parameters are used to represent quantities and are displayed as a value with
appropriate units. Examples of analog parameters include Engine Speed, Coolant Temperature, and Oxygen
Sensor Voltage.

PARAMETER DESCRIPTIONS
The following is a list of available parameters. Note that each manufacturer does not necessarily support all
of these parameters.
