Healthy settings
A setting is where people actively use and shape the
environment; thus it is also where people create or
solve problems relating to health. Settings can
normally be identified as having physical boundaries,
a range of people with defined roles, and an
organizational structure.

Setting for health

The place or social context in which people engage
in daily activities in which environmental,
organizational, and personal factors interact to
affect health and wellbeing.

improve a better environment

HEALTHY CITIES: The impact of

HC takes efforts, time, cultural
changes and constancy of
purpose from the manager and a
shift values both by the council
and by the municipal

HEALTHY CITIES: The HCs need a

strong political commitment to
put and place the health issues on
the top level of decision making
process at all levels (WHO, 1998).

HEALTHY CITIES: Commitment to

health; political decision making;
intersectoral action; community
participation; innovation and
healthy public policy are a number
of major characteristics of HCs
(Chu, 2009a; L. J. Duhl & Sanchez,
1999; WHO, 2002b)

HEALTHY CITIES: The aim of HCs

approach is to bring a partnership
mechanism (WHO, 2002a); to
achieve a good quality of life, to
provide basic sanitation and
hygiene needs and to facilitate
access to health care (Ashton, 2002;
WHO, 2002b, 2007b).

HEALTHY CITIES: The HCs

concept is based on community
engagement and partnership in
the cities dwellers (WHO, 2007b).
