Activity Design Plan

Activity objective
The students will be able to remember content knowledge of vocabulary words by stating
definitions, parts of speech, and sentence usage within the game activity The Strongest
Student.
Description of Activity
The Strongest Student is a game in which students will participate in a series of rapid-fire
questions in which they will have the opportunity to gain points and receive extra credit for their
final exam.
Motivation
Extrinsic: the extrinsic motivation will be candy. Students will be allowed to get one piece of
candy for participation. Students will be able to get more pieces of candy based on the number of
questions they get right. The winner of the game will receive extra credit points based on the
number of points they have gained throughout the game.
Intrinsic: The intrinsic motivation will be the review of content knowledge prior of the final
assessment. This game will give them the opportunity refresh their knowledge and gain a better
understanding.
Directions
In The Strongest Student, the class will break off into three groups and line up at the back of
the classroom. For the first round one group will stand at the front of the class. The teacher will
put two minutes and thirty seconds on a timer and once time starts will begin to ask the students
one-by-one questions pertaining to the vocabulary words the students learned throughout the
year. The first question will be worth one point and each question will increase by one point
thereafter. The students will answer questions and accumulate points during the two minutes and
thirty seconds. If a student answers a question wrong the group loses all points they have gained.
Students do have the chance to bank or save gained points before answering a question.
However, that question will go back to being worth one point. Points banked will be transferred
to the next round. When the time is up the student who answered the least amount of questions
right will be ejected from the game. If no student answered a question wrong then the audience
groups will chooses a student. The students will play through each round of the game until only 3
students are left. The student with the most points will go first and will be asked rapid-fire

questions until only one student is left. The last student left standing will win the game and be
dubbed the strongest student.
Rules
1. Only one student will answer one question at a time.
2. Students will not express negative reactions to a student getting a question wrong
3. The student must wait until the teacher has finished saying the entire question before
answering
4. The audience will not blurt out the answer to a question or the question will become void
5. Students will only be able to bank points before they answer a question
Check for Understanding
The teacher, or coordinator of the game will ask a few brief questions, in attempts to limit chaos
as well as having clear concise, and fair rules for the game.

4.

How many students can answer a question at a time?

Will the students have to wait until the teacher finishes stating the question?
Can you bank points after you answer a question?
Will a student be able to insult another student for getting a question wrong?

Active Participation
All students will be actively engaged. Students must pay close attention to the students
answering the questions as they will be able to choose a student to leave the game based on the
way they answer the questions.
Expectations of Students Behavior
Students will be respectful of all student answers. Students will not insult a student for getting a
question wrong. There will be a moderate noise level within the classroom. If the noise level gets
too high the teacher will regain the class attention by using the verbal signal 1,2,3 eyes on me!
All students will be expected to try their absolute hardest. Once the teacher regains the attention
of the classroom she will remind the students of the rules and procedures and then the game will
continue.
