Exceptionalities
ESOL students could work in groups to
complete the essay. Students could work with
a translator to speak the essay in their native
language and translate it into English for
grading.

2.

3.
4.
5.

ESOL students could work as a team to

instruct fellow students about a recreation
activity. The ESOL student could model the
actions and another student could verbally
instruct.
ESOL students will be in the same rotation
groups. The similar routine will help them feel
comfortable and safe in order to patriciate in
the activities.
Students with physical disabilities could learn
different games that do not require as much
physical activities. Students could learn riddles
or play card games as a substitution.
Struggling students could be given additional
time for the essay writing and journaling.
Students will be writing difficulties could
verbally deliver their ticket out reflections to a
teacher to write down. Students could use
voice recognition software that would type out
the words the students are dictating.
Written transcripts of the videos can be
provided for students with hearing disabilities.
As an extension activity, students can create
how-to instructional videos about the

recreationalactivities.Thesecouldbe
sharedwithfutureclasses.

9.

The teacher will set up four discovery stations prior to instruction class time. Each
station will have written information regarding a pioneer recreation activity,
supplies to attempt the game, and a video demonstrating the activity.
The teacher will welcome the class and distribute the clicker answer system.
Students will anonymously answer review questions regarding the material covered
in the previous days of this unit plan. There will be five questions regarding each
day for a total of twenty questions. Students will be able to see the results on the
main board through a projector. Teacher will review correct answers with students.
Students will gather in their rotation groups from previous days. Review the
information in their journals from day one. Students will discuss and brainstorm
ideas of what pioneers did for fun, after all the work was completed.
Teacher will display several pioneer toys such as yo-yos, card decks, marbles,
jacks, pick up sticks, and jump ropes. The teacher will introduce the topic of
pioneer recreation and introduce the stations.
Each student group will be assigned a game station. Using the jigsaw learning
strategy, students will become experts regarding that game or recreational activity.
Students will have ten minutes to learn and practice their game. Below are the
game stations and the resources available at each station. Each station will have the
materials to play the game.
a. Tug of War. Students can play with the whole group with the rope or twoby-two with the 2x4.

Every expert will take the necessary supplies in order to teach other students their
game. The will be two experts for each game in every group. Students will have
fifteen to twenty minutes to teach their classmates the various games.
Students will independently record their learning in their ticket out journals.
Students will discuss with their shoulder buddy the importance of physical activity
and recreation. The students will have the opportunity to share whole group the
benefits of physical recreation in pioneer times and in todays society.
After the jigsaw activity is complete, students will be given class time to begin
working on their final essay assessment. They will work independently to create a
two-page essay regarding one of the aspects of Florida pioneer life that was
covered during the unit plan. Students will use the facts and notes recording in
their ticket-out journal through the unit. The teacher will circulate around the
classroom to provide guidance with topic selection. If students are struggling,
students could work in groups. Students will finish the essay at home, if they do
not finish it in class. Before students take the work home, the teacher will approve
the topic and thesis statement. During this work time, students can listen to Florida
pioneer music.
