Standards:
English language learners communicate for social and instructional purposes within the
school setting.
Materials:
White or colored copy paper
Copy machine or printer
Paperclips
Brads
Card stock/construction paper if available
Pencils
Objective:
Families will attend Literacy Night to learn how to encourage and support literacy in
their homes on a daily basis.
Families will make take-home literacy activities to bolster literacy skills at home.

Procedure:
Print the Sign-in Sheet for Literacy Night. The Sign-in Sheet can be found in the
Additional Resources pages 107-108.
Print the Parent Questionnaire/Survey for the end of the event. The parent
Questionnaire/Survey can be found in the Additional Resources page 109.
Print out the Spin-a-Word game response sheets double sided so that there are
response pages on both sides. Each family will get two pages of double-sided
game boards.
Print out the word family endings (-at, -ug, -ip, & -ot).
o One strip of each at, -ug, -ip, & -ot for each family.
Print out the word beginning circles. Each family will need 4 circles.
o Use colored construction paper if available.
Each family will need four brads.
Print the Family Directions in English and Spanish for families to take.
Model Game:
o Show families the response sheets for recording the words they make.
o Model how to push the brad through the center dot in the spinner and the
matching dot on the word strip to make each spinner.
o Have a set of word spinners already made to display.
o The object of the game is to move the strip around the circle and write
each word that they make.
o Record the word on the response sheet, then decide if it is a real word or
not (use the word bank for real words) and circle yes or no.
Ask parents to complete the Parent Questionnaire/Survey at the end of the
Literacy Night event.

Assessment:
Maintain a Parent Sign-In sheet for your records.
Give the Parent Exit Survey and reflect on the parent feedback.
Maintain the Parent Exit Surveys for your records, and to make improvements if
necessary for future events.
