Sharing The Road:
Cyclists, like pedestrians, are vulnerable to significant

injuries or death in car crashes. Two major causes that
contribute to car crashes involving cyclists are distracted
driving and failing to yield the right of way. When you are
driving you can help reduce the chance of a crash by sharing the road safely. Dont get distracted, shoulder check
for cyclists, yield to cyclists, keep a safe distance and scan
for cyclists.
A person operating a bicycle on a highway has the same
rights and duties as a driver of a vehicle. As per section
183 of the Motor Vehicle Act, cyclists must not ride on a
sidewalk unless authorized by a bylaw or unless otherwise
directed by a sign, they must ride as near as practicable to
the right side of the highway and must not ride abreast
of another person operating a cycle on the roadway.
Together, cyclists and drivers can make our roads a safer
place.

Neil Muths Contributions

Will Live On Forever
Columbia Basin Trust board and staff and residents of

the region join Neils family in mourning the unexpected
passing of Neil Muth, president and CEO. Neil will be
remembered for his honest and sincere engagement with
communities, his leadership and his commitment to supporting the efforts of the people of the Basin.
The Trust board and staff are deeply saddened. Neil was
a friend, a mentor and a leader to so many. He inspired us
all to strive for excellence for the Trust and the Basin, said
Trust chair Rick Jensen. We mourn his loss and extend
our deepest sympathies to his wife Cathy and three children, John, Emily and Hilary.
Id like to express my sincere condolences to Neils
wife Cathy and the children, said minister of Energy and
Mines Bill Bennett. As a longtime resident of the Columbia Basin and as the minister responsible for Columbia
Basin Trust, I will be forever grateful for the knowledge,
wisdom and vision Neil shared with me on many, many
occasions. Neil has been taken from us far too soon, but
his contributions to the growth of the Trust and to the
people of the Basin will live on forever.
Neil joined the Trust in 2005. He was born and raised
in Trail and was excited to return to the region from Victoria, where he served as vice-president, Private Placements, for the British Columbia Investment Management
Corporation. That excitement showed in his passion for
and interest in every aspect of Basin communities: their
projects and their aspirations, as well as the best places to
ski, eat and have a cup of coffee.
Neils accomplishments as president and CEO over the
past 11 years are many, but his appreciation and respect
for the Trusts mission statement are what truly defined
his service: by ensuring the Trust built and delivered programs with residents and communities; by seeking out
and responding directly to feedback and guidance from
communities and by being flexible and responsive to
community needs.
While he left us much too early, we will do our best to
honour Neil by continuing to work closely with communities and people just like he did, added Jensen.
A playful and comprehensive website mapping wellbeing resources in the West Kootenay is live at you.selkirk.ca
The interactive website designed for mobile devices
aims to lead students to mental health support services in
the community with a simple click. It was created in collaboration between Selkirk College Digital Arts and New
Media Program students, Nursing Program students and
Selkirk College employees.
The project was made possible through funding from
the Ministry of Advanced Education in the Province of
British Columbia as part of a commitment to ensuring
people with disabilities can access education and training
that will enable them to secure meaningful employment.
The responsive site asks students lively questions on
sometimes serious subject matter Hungry? Apparently
you cant download food, what now? and then points
them toward services right on Selkirk College campuses
along with agencies and resources in the greater community. There are also links to carefully selected websites,
TED Talks and blogs that offer further knowledge about
health and well-being.
Selkirk College instructional dean Kate Pelletier
explains the roots of the project. We learned from students and staff that there was a lack of information about
where to find mental health resources in the community
and where to turn on campus. We wanted to help students
find what they need, she says. Students are more than
just the books that they are studying. Its important for us
to take a holistic approach, understanding that if students
are stressed out and not coping well in their general life;
they arent going to be successful in their studies.
Former Selkirk College counsellor Robbin Higgins was
involved in the early stages. She engaged with students to
learn how this need could be met and planted the seed
for the now complete project which will be shared with
other institutions that will adapt it for their students. Im
delighted the idea is coming to fruition says Higgins who
now works in Kyrgyzstan at the new University of Central
Asia offering weekly classes on health and well-being. I
look forward to accessing the web resource from here.
Teamwork on this project came from Selkirk College
students-turned-alumni Thomas Nowaczynski, Samantha Alvarado, Colby Dunlop and Alicia Abrosimoff under
the supervision of instructor Shane Hainsworth with the
guidance of local web developer and former Digital Arts
student Denis Leblanc.
Since the launch of BCs Skills for Jobs Blueprint, the
Ministry of Advanced Education has provided almost
$2.8 million to 20 public post secondary institutions to
develop programs to give people with disabilities skills to
succeed in training aligned with in demand jobs.
Funding through this program is being used to develop
a number of resources for Selkirk College staff and students including the creation of a video called What I Wish
They Knew featuring students sharing their experiences
with mental health challenges.
