Underage College Students Drink in Excess: Qualitative Research Findings." ProQuest.

American Journal of Health Education, Mar.-Apr. 2010. Web. 25 Oct. 2016.
Young college students have many reasons to consume alcohol during the week, but often
do not consider the negative consequences it could have on them or the people around them. For
the most part their reasons for consuming alcohol are the same, to relieve stress, have fun, and
take a break from academics. According to the studies and surveys in the article, all the students
relate back to the same thing, everyone is doing it. Also the people surveyed found themselves
falling behind academically which adds more stress. The college students that consume alcohol
unintentionally end up feeling the opposite way after they have consumed alcohol.
This proves that consuming alcohol is not help as young adults go through college. The
survey showed men and women and at the beginning they both said they were dependent on
alcohol. In actuality they only think they depend on alcohol because that is what everyone else
says too. People described that they couldnt be themselves without alcohol. Thats should be
when you are yourself, I think it gives a more genuine effect and it makes it more sincere. This
article told me why college students want to drink and why they participate in parties. It also
gave information through surveys and college students gave responses with their views on what
alcohol does for them.

The article that I got the information from is a peer reviewed article from the Atkins
Library database. Virginia Dodd had a Ph.D in social health and behavior and she is an associate
professor of health education and behavior at the college of health and human performance.
Tavis Glassman has a Ph.D in health science and is a professor in the department of health and
recreation professions. Monica Webb received the North Carolina Women of Justice Award.
Maureen Miller has a master in liberal arts and is apart of the health department at the University
of New Hampshire, Durham.

National Institute On Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism. "Alcohol : What You Don't Know Can
Harm You." Alcohol (2002): n. pag. 2002. Web. 8 Nov. 2016.
In this journal, it highlights all the possible problems that alcohol abuse can have on
people, no matter the age. Consumption of alcohol can lead to many diseases, can cause birth
defects, and can be dangerous if taken with medicine. If alcohol consumption starts at a young
age, then this leads to increased chances to have these effects. Alcohol consumption isnt healthy
for relationships, both family and work. It can lead to tension between your spouse and lead to
family disfunction. At the workplace it can affect how much work you get done, lateness, and
coworker relationships.
This journal showed that it is not only the immediate effects of alcohol that can be
dangerous, but it can also be long term effects. Although these chances are greater if you start
while underage. This helps answer my inquiry question by taking it a step further and showing
the risks of alcohol in the future, within families, the workplace, health risks, and unborn
children.
I found this journal in the Atkins Library database. It is peer reviewed, meaning other
experts have read and made sure the information was correct. It was written by the National

Institute On Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism which is a government ran institute and was
established under authority of the Comprehensive Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Prevention,
Treatment, and Rehabilitation Act of 1970. They have organized many alcohol research centers
and have helped by organizing alcohol anonymous meetings.

National Institutes of Health. Parenting to Prevent Childhood Alcohol Use. Bethesda, MD:
National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National
Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2010. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse
and Alcoholism, Oct. 2010. Web. 7 Nov. 2016.
In this article the National Institutes of Health explains that family can have the biggest
impact on whether or not their children will end up consuming alcohol at a young age. By using
different parenting styles people can protect their children from alcohol or introduce it to them.
In this study it shows that too strict of parents can cause rebellion and the want to participate in
dangerous activities, including consuming alcohol. The parenting that worked the best in this
study, was the parents that set ground rules and punished their children when they did something
bad, but also they would praise their children for doing good things.
This article gave me a new perspective of why underage people drink, instead of its just
fun, it let me see that parents can also have an effect on their kids when it comes to drinking. It
shows that it isnt solely the child's decision to drink because if they were exposed to it at a
young age then they would think less of it, but if they had been taught ground rules and what's
right from wrong, then they would be less likely to consume alcohol.
This article was written by the National Institutes of Health which is a biomedical
research facility ran by the U.S. government, but the article was composed of many references,
but the biggest coming from the writings of Diana Baumrind. She received her M.A. and Ph.D.

U.S. Department of Transportation. "Community How To Guides On Underage Drinking

Prevention Developed ." Community How To Guides On Underage Drinking Prevention
Developed. Ed. Linda S. Cosgrove. National Highway Traffic Safety Organization, May
2001. Web. 08 Nov. 2016.
Linda Cosgrove and the U.S. Department of Transportation point out the importances of
educating, enforcing, and coming together in a community to combat the underage drinking
problem. The article describes that in order to establish an alcohol safe community that the
community must do many things. Communities need to start coalitions and groups to educate
and show the risks of consuming too much alcohol. They should have meeting and measure the
use rates of alcohol in their community. The most important aspect according to Linda Cosgrove
is that there must be enforcement in order to achieve success.
This article helped me answer my inquiry question based on the fact that it lists the ways
to help prevent underage alcohol consumption. It shows that you can target any person with any
background or upbringing and turn their life around by helping them through steps in the
programs that this article showed. It lets me know that no matter what, people can still change
their minds about alcohol at a young age and they can tell their story to the next generation to
help prevent them from doing the same thing.

United States. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. "Alcohol and Drug
Addiction Happens in the Best of Families and It Hurts." Alcohol and Drug Addiction
Happens in the Best of Families (n.d.): n. pag. U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services, 2010. Web. 7 Nov. 2016.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration pointed out the effects
alcohol can have on a family as a whole. The alcohol addict is not the only one that suffers in
that family. It can cause families to separate and children to become dependent on alcohol as they
age. But there is ways to help with alcohol consumption in the family. Be honest with them and
go with them to programs created by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration.
This helped me answer my inquiry question by telling me how to solve alcohol related,
family problems. It also showed me that alcohol doesnt have eyes, it doesnt care what race,
color, or size of a person. Alcohol can have an impact on anyone that uses it and it isnt fair to
their family member to suffer from their problem. However their families can decide to fix it if
they wish to. By doing this it could save their family and could possibly save their children from
going down a similar path.
I found this source in the Atkins Library database and it is a peer reviewed article. It was
written by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. It is a federal
agency trying improve the quality and availability of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitative
services and is ran by the U.S. government. Their website is a .gov. They are responsible for
handing out different rehabilitative awards to communities and other organization.
