Exploring the Role of Music in Secondary English and History Classrooms through
Personal Practical Theory
Two brief vignettes describe how two different classrooms experienced strategies
to better learn History and English. There is a lot of support for the use of music in the
teachings of these two subjects despite the arguments against the relevance of using such
a strategy. There is little understanding as to why teachers gravitate towards this approach
or how at the end of the day they result in using lyrics and other musical tactics to teach
both English and History. The real wonder and conversation is how teachers ultimately
came to this approach, as techniques such as this one should essentially be true for other
classrooms along with other subjects. The basis of this article is to explore how to
develop ones teaching repertoire and essentially understand the overwhelming move
towards music in the industry.
Personal Practical Theories are an intense look at ones own teaching practice and
how they can enhance their instruction so that all students can learn to the best of their
ability. These are a teachers set of ideas and beliefs that they believe are the best ways to
engage and reach their students. These theories are great for an experienced teacher to
work through consistently but can also provide a great deal of guidance for a beginning
teacher as well. This process also encourages a teacher to reflect and examine the
progress of his/her students and how they respond to different types of experiences.
Teachers are encouraged to immerse their students in content in a number of ways to help
them understand the material deeper along with effectively reach each and every student
in the room in a way that students can relate to. Music is beginning to be the break
through barrier between engagement and the content being taught.
Music is a technique that has worked well for English and History teachers for
many different reasons but also because music is motivational and universal. The
engagement you receive from students through the use of music leads to student
achievement. Music also allows students to express their emotions and ideas in a way that
they understand and can relate to. Additionally, music allows teachers to set the tone for
the exploration of a topic and allows a different level of engagement from the students.
Finally, music immerses students into the experiences that are being taught throughout
the school year.
