Little is known of who David Denning was, where he lived or

worked. Denning authored four books on woodworking as well as
articles for a variety of journals, both amateur craft and professional
trade. From the breadth of his writings, we can assume that he was an
experienced woodworker, most likely an educator and/or tradesman.
Denning is referred to in a number of manual arts texts of the late
19th and early 20th Centuries, indicating his acceptance by the
educational community as a useful resource.

of the development of furniture, in which the tricks and deceits of a
class of dealers in pretended antiques are exposed; and then furnishes

We have received for review a copy of the Art and Craft of CabinetMaking, published by Messrs. Whittaker and Co., of London, the
author being David Denning. A cursory glance at the work shows
that Mr. Denning is fully acquainted with the subject on which he
writes. The book is profusely illustrated with over 200 diagrams, and
is nicely got up. The size is 8vo, and the work contains 320 pages,
including and excellent and comprehensive index. The price of the
work is 5s. It cannot be considered dear at the price. Commencing at
the beginning, the book takes the reader on to the more advanced
paths of the art on which it treats. Throughout the work the mode of
explanation is really comprehensive and masterly. The book deserves a
large sale.
