CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1

Background

The authors adopted the topic Skype, because skype is the most popular voice
communication service in the world. Skype enable to file tansfering, texting, video
chating, and video conferencing. The service of skype is available for deskop computers,
notebook and tablet computers, and other mobile device. Skype uses voice over internet
protocol (VoIP) technology with peer to peer (P2P) model.
If we are review about the popularity of Skype, is a growing fast because of better
voice quality, ability to work behind firewalls, and NAT(Network Address Translation)
and ease of use. The users of Skype it has over 300 million. Communications have come
a long way since the early telephone. Skype is finally fulfilling the promise of
telepresence. Taking a leap forward from scratchy analog audio. To clear audio and even
video conferencing, at the press of a button.
The benefit of using skype are call quality, cost saving, and flexibility. The skype
application can be running on windows, macintosh, linux, or windows mobile operating
systems. Skype is also very useful if we want to call person who are far away, because
Skype has a good connection, and we can use it everywhere as long as we have a good
Internet.

CHAPTER II
BASIC THEORY
2.1

What is Skype

Skype is a software application for making video and voice calls over the Internet.
Over the past ten years, it has established itself as an essential tool for communication
over the web. From calls from grandma and grandpa to international business meetings,
it has over 300 million connected users worldwide today. Communications have come a
long way since the early telephone. In addition, Skype is finally fulfilling the promise of
telepresence. Taking a leap forward from scratchy analog audio. To clear audio and even
video conferencing, at the press of a button.
Skype is everywhere. From tablets, to mobile phones to landlines. Moreover, even TVs
and game consoles. In addition, with the release of Windows 8.1. Microsoft, who now
owns Skype, has packaged Skype right into the operating system. This makes it an always,
on app. That lets we take calls at any time without draining our battery. The uses of Skype
are limitless. Job interviews, video dating, counseling and coaching. Online education,
family reunions, sales pitches. Alternatively, just everyday chats, it is up to we how to
use it.
We can choose from three types of conversations in Skype. Video, voice or text chat.
Moreover, if we upgrade to a premium account, we can have multi-way voice
conferences, of up to 25 people. Moreover, group video calling supporting up to ten
people. With video chat, the person we are communicating with, will see our video image
and hear our voice. We can also chat with them in the chat box at the same box. This is
great if we wants to share links, or other text that we are discussing. Voice chat is just
like a telephone call. But, often with much crisper and clearer audio.

Since we are not dealing with poor cell phone signals or analog landline interference.
With a headset, it can almost feel like the person is right there in the room with we. Text
chat is just that. Chatting in a text box with a Skype contact. 1
2.2

History of Skype

Skype came onto the scane in 2003 and today is one of the popular applications used
to make voice and video calls over the internet. The history of skype :

In august 2003, skype was founded by Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, the
software is invented by Zahti Heinla, and Priit Kasesalu. Skype is a peer-to-peer
VoIP client. The name of the company evolved from "Sky peer-to-peer" or
"Skyper. And because domain of Skyper is not available or already taken
Skyper is changed to Skype. The original Skype application permitted voice
calls from PC to PC. Skypes original logo was purple.

In 2004, skype introduces audio conference calling and skype release for Mac.
Skype just only introduces audio and in this year, we can just calling people.

In 2005, skype release for linux and eBay acquired Skype in a landmark
transaction for $2.5 billion. The founders began to concentrate on a streaming
video service known as Joost. Skype want to release new features video service
or the streaming service but the streaming unsuccessful or failed. During the eBay
ownership, Skype continued to make incremental advances and Skype out is
banned in south China. Because in south China there is 350 million pieces of
harmful information, and it had been deleted from the Chinese Internet.

In 2006, Skype release version 3.0 for windows and 2.0 for Mac. Skpecasts were
introduced in May 2006. Skypecasts allowed users to utilize voice conversations
with up to 100 participants. These communications resembled chat rooms that
were directed by a host who determined who could speak next.

In 2007, eBay claims it had overvalued Skypes worth. So users unables to

connect to the network because of a Skype system-wide crash. Skype versions
3.1, 3.2,and 3.5 has released with new features such as : skype Find, Skype Prime,
Send money, inclusion of video content in chat, call transfer and auto-redial.

http://www.lynda.com/Skype-tutorials/What-Skype-why-use/138320/159678-4.html#nogo

In 2008, conflict between the founders and eBay destablize the company so for
brings stability in the company John Silverman becomes the CEO. After that the
company begins to focus on video calls. And release Skype versions 3.8 for
windows.

In 2009, eBay, Silver Lake investor Group,Skype and Jotlid settle litigation over
a software license dispute. Skype acquires Joltid patents and Zennstrom and Friis
join skype investorgroup with 14% ownership. And eBay sells 70% of skype to
various investors. But in this year, Skype launched application for iPhone and
Android and Skype 4.0 is released with full screen high quality video calling
feature.

In 2010, Skype 5.0 is released with group video calls with up to 4 participant
feature. And skype is embedded in internet connected widescreen HDTVs. Skype
also updates the iPhone application so calls can be made on the 3G network. In
this version we can call with high speed and better audio, even if we have a fast
internet we can calling with some participant with clear audio and clear frame for
video call.2

2.3

What are Audio Conferencing and Video Conferencing

Video conferencing means to conduct a conference between two or more participants

at different sites by using computer networks to transmit audio and video data. For
example, a point-to-point (two-person) video conferencing system works much like a
video telephone. Each participant has a video camera, microphone, and speakers mounted
on his or her computer. As the two participants speak to one another, their voices are
carried over the network and delivered to the other's speakers, and whatever images
appear in front of the video camera appear in a window on the other participant's monitor.
Multipoint videoconferencing allows three or more participants to sit in a virtual
conference room and communicate as if they were sitting right next to each other. Until
the mid 90s, the hardware costs made videoconferencing prohibitively expensive for most
organizations, but that situation is changing rapidly. Many analysts believe that

http://www.themarysue.com/skype-history-infographic/

videoconferencing will be one of the fastest-growing segments of the computer industry

in the latter half of the decade.3
An audio conference, or teleconference, is simply when a meeting between several
parties is held over the telephone instead of in person. The party instigating the audioconference is known as the calling party and those joining the call are known as the
participants. Depending on the meetings objective, these conferences are set up so that
the calling party is either just a passive listener or can join in on the conversation. A
simple form of audio conferencing is three-way calling, where there are just three parties
involved, and this is generally a form of small business software used mainly by smaller
companies and private individuals.4
2.4

Technology on Skype
Skype is a social networking that is enable to calling, video calling, send image,

and chatting. Skype used p2p as their model, p2p is decentralized communications model
in which people can be a server or client depend on who is caller or receiving caller.
Skype also used VoIP as their technology. VoIP is a technology for sending a multimedia
and communication of voice over IP such as internet. We can connect to another computer
or other people in a real time.
Skype uses an overlay peer-to-peer network. There are two types of nodes in this
overlay network, ordinary hosts and super nodes (SN). An ordinary host is a Skype
application that can be used to place voice calls and send text messages. A super node is
an ordinary hosts end-point on the Skype network. Any node with a public IP address
having sufficient CPU, memory, and network bandwidth is a candidate to become a super
node.5

PROBLEM ANALYSIS
3.1

The System Requirements for Skype

To get up and running with Skype, we'll need:

An internet connection (requirements Wi-Fi or 3G).

Speakers and a microphone (mobile phones, tablets and most computers have
these built in) recommended using headphone with microphone.

A camera to make video calls (again, most devices have these). Recommended
using Logitech C920.

The Skype application on the device of our choice. Download Skype application.

Make sure that our system meets these requirements, that our operating system is up
to date, and that we have the most recent hardware drivers from the manufacturer
installed before downloading the latest version of Skype.

Ways to pay
Skype's most popular features are free, including basic calling, video, and messaging.
If we want something that's included in one of the paid services, payment options vary
depending on the features we choose.

Pay as we go: We will need to purchase something called Skype Credit for our
account. Skype Credit is how we pay for anything on Skype that's not part of a

10

subscription. It is similar to buying tokens or charging up our MetroCard so we can

ride the subway for example.

Subscription: We can purchase a regular subscription that lasts 1 month, 3 months,

or 12 months. When it expires, Skype will renew it automatically using the payment
method we have on file.

To set our notifications :
Notifications are the items and actions Skype alerts we to, like when specific users
are online or want to add we to their contacts. Most notifications are displayed at the
bottom of our screen so we can always tell what is happening on Skype, even when
we do not have the window open.
1. Click Tools, and then choose Options.
2. The Skype - Options window will appear. Click Notifications to open the
notifications settings pane.

Figure 17 Notification Setting

Some notifications play a sound when they alert us. To change or disable these
sounds, click Sounds in the same window.
To edit our profile:
Filling out our profile is optional, but it is a great way to share something about
ourselves with other people on Skype. Just be careful about the information we
choose to share. We can always fill out some items but leave other items blank or
unspecified. We can also control whether certain items on our profile are public,
private, or visible to contacts only.
1. Select our name near the upper-left corner of the Skype window.

Figure 18 Edit Our Profile

2. Click Change picture to add a picture to our profile. We can also choose who will
be able to see our picture. There are three option contact, public, and private. If
we select Contacts, only the people on our contact list will be able to see it. If we
select Public, everyone using Skype can see it. If we select private, no one can
see it.

4. To share more personal information about ourselves. Such as our gender and the
city where we live. Remember, this information is optional, and much of it will
be visible on our profile. If we do not want the public to see it, do not include it.
We can use the controls on the right to decide whether certain items are private
or visible to our contacts only.

F. Contacts
It is time to add our friend and our family to our contacts. Adding contact or
importing them from services like Facebook or Outlook is the first step toward actually
using Skype to call, chat, and video conference with the people we care about.
To add a contact:
1. Search for someone we know using a name, Skype name, or email address
with the search bar.

Figure 22 Searching for someone in Skype

2. When we find the person we are looking for, click Add to Contacts to send a
contact request.

24

Figure 23 Make a new contact

Accepting contact requests

We can add contacts to our account and they can add us to theirs via contact
requests. When we receive a request, it's displayed as a notification above the
Contacts tab. Just click the notification to open a pane where we can add, ignore, or
block the person.

Figure 24 Accepting contact requests

Blocking contacts
There are several reasons we may want to block someone on Skype. Perhaps the
person is sending we spam or phishing for personal information like our bank account
number. On the other hand, we may someday need to block someone we know for
inappropriate behavior like cyber harassment. We can always block or ignore
suspicious contact requests as soon as we receive them. We can also accept them if
we think we might know them, then block them later if we change our mind. All we
have to do is right-click each name on the Contacts tab and choose Block This Person
from the list of options.

25

Figure 25 Blocking Contact

G. Making call
Before our first call to make our first call. It is easier than we might think. To start,
we need at least one contact. Go back to our lesson on Adding Contacts if we need help
finding or adding people we know. Next, we should make a test call to make sure the
person on the other end will be able to hear us. After that, we will be ready to take
advantage of Skype's calling services, from the free to the paid.
Making a test call
There is an easy way to test our voice call settings and equipment before we call
anyone on Skype. It is through a special contact, which is actually an automated
service that mimics a phone call named Skype Test Call or Echo/Sound Test Service.
The contact is already on our contacts list. Before we begin, make sure:
We're connected to the Internet
Our volume is turned up
Our speakers and microphone are plugged in if they're not already built in to
our computer
To make a test call:
1. The contact's information will open in a pane on the right. Click the Call button.

26

Figure 26 Make a Test Call

2. The call window will open, and the test call will begin.

Figure 27 Echo Sound Test Service

3. Follow the operator's instructions to record an audio sample, and then wait for it
to be played back to us. The test call will hang up when we are done. If we cannot
connect to the test call, cannot hear the operator, or cannot record an audio sample,
we may have a problem with our settings or equipment. To figure out what is
wrong, double-check the items listed above step 1, then go to Skype's Sound SetUp Guide.

To set our online status:

We will not only be making calls on Skype but receiving them as well. It is
important to understand our online status, how our contacts and we use it to tell when
people are available on Skype. To change our status, click the icon beside our name
and choose from the drop-down menu. We can also use the Skype menu at the top of
the screen. The following table describes the different status icons that we can select
for ourselves, or that are displayed for our contacts.

Our contacts can see that we are signed in to Skype but
not necessarily at our computer. Instant messages will
be delivered to we immediately and our contacts can still
try to call we.
Our contacts can see that we are online but we do not
want to be disturbed. They can still send we instant
messages and call us, but we will not be alerted with
sound.
We will appear to be offline to all of our contacts, but
we can still use Skype as usual. It is a good way to
continue using Skype but not be disturbed by instant
messages or calls from our contacts.

Making free Skype to Skype calls

Calls to other people on Skype are free. The word for this type of call is Skype to
Skype, meaning we and the other person are both using Skype not any other kind of
phone or mobile device to call each other. To call someone on Skype:
1. Click the person we want to call on the Contacts tab.

To answer, click the Answer button or Decline if we are too busy to talk (or do
not know the caller). We can also answer with video, allowing the caller to see us on
our webcam. If we do nothing, the call will keep ringing until the other person hangs
up.

Making Skype to Phone calls

To call other phones from Skype, we will need to purchase some Skype credit or
a subscription first. The word for this type of call is Skype to Phone. These features
are not free, but they are inexpensive if we are interested in doing more with our
Skype account. Other paid services include our own Skype number that anyone can
call to reach us on Skype and Skype to go for low-cost international calls from our
phone or mobile device. These must be purchased separately. To call other phones
from Skype follow this steps:
1. Click the Call phones button above the Contacts tab.

Figure 32 call phone

2. Enter the phone number we want to call, and then click the Call button.

3. The call window will appear. We will hear a ringing until the other person
answers.
4. Talk as long as we want. Click the End call button when we are ready to hang
up.
Our own online number
When we subscribe to our own Skype number, Skype gives us a regular nine digit
phone number (for example, 321-555-1100) that anyone can call to reach us on
Skype. The call will pop up on our computer, just like a regular incoming call. The
benefit of having a Skype number is people who are not on Skype can use it to call

31

us from their landline or mobile device. It also gives us our own voicemail. Many
people like to use their Skype numbers in place of their ordinary phones, but
remember Skype cannot replace our ordinary phone completely. For instance, it
cannot be used to make emergency calls. Skype numbers are not included in the
normal subscription, but they can be purchased separately (similar to an upgrade) for
a period of 3 months or 12 months.

H. Making Video Calls with Skype

On Skype, video calls are easy, whether we have a built in webcam or one we have
purchased separately. We will need to test our webcam to make sure the person on the
other end will be able to see us. After that, we will be ready to make video calls one on
one or with an entire group. Before we begin, make sure:
We are connect to the Internet.
Our volume is turn up.
Our speakers and microphone are plug in if they are not already built in to our
computer.
Our webcam is plugged in if it's not already built in and we've installed the
software that came with it

Get the very best Skype video call quality

Get the most from your network.
We know that the strength of our connection to the person we are calling has a big
impact on the quality of our call. If Skype detects a weak connection then it will
reduce the quality to try to stop the call from dropping altogether. So first, up, let us
look at a few ways of getting the most out of your internet connection. Using an
Ethernet cable and physically connecting to your router is best, followed by power
line communications, Wi-Fi and mobile data networks in that order. Remember, it is
not only about the speed of the connection, the stability is also important to a good
quality call.
Get Skype for Windows desktop.
Skype can receive and show Full HD, 1080p video from others. However, that
conditions is only we can meet in desktop version. However, if we want very good
HD we must using desktop version.

41

Get a Logitech C920.

Unlike the other webcam, the Logitech C920 has the ability to encode 1080p video
using it is own hardware. Skype for desktop can use of this feature, which is why it
is the only version of Skype able to send Full HD video.

3.6

spy on top officials phones, and because Skype is, connect with our platform so
hacker can access our privation.
Skype technology requires Wi-Fi or 3G service to run
Because Skype needs a big bandwidth, so Skype requires Wi-Fi or 3G service.

43

CHAPTER IV
SUMMARY
4.1

Conclusion

Skype has changed the way people communicate throughout the world in
schools, businesses, and in society. We can just video call in Skype so the way
people communicate is changed

Skype has given educators, business owners and society a chance to stay
connected with people at all times as long as they have a connection of internet

It has opened the door to new opportunities to veer away from the normal
classroom or business setting and has given people new options to learn and
grow.

4.2

Suggestion
Skype had better reduce our connection if we do not have a good connection or

not stable connection internet. Skype should be can equalize our call or video, instead of
force close our calling or end our calling automatically. It is so annoying if we do not
have a good connection.
