Online Projects, Collaboration Sites, and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Template

Name: Emma Jones
Grade Level: 2nd Grade
Content Area: Science
Standards Addressed:
S2L1. Students will investigate the life cycles of different living organisms.
a. Determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a
mammal such as a cat or dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an
amphibian such as a frog, and an insect such as a butterfly.
Title of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: BugScope
URL of Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:

Describe how you would use the Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing
Opportunity in your classroom:
I would use this collaboration site to discuss the lifecycle of an insect. Before we
use this online tool the students must have some background knowledge over the
lifecycle as well as learning the parts of an insect. Students will then go outside
to gather insects to send to the professors at BugScope and wait for our
scheduled date to view our insects using a microscope and collaborate with the
scientists on video chat. After, students will post their discoveries of their insects
on our class website.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity
in a classroom?
Computer and Video chat
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience
(note: all of them may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you
are reaching a high LoTi Level.):
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom
and often beyond their school: Students can discuss with scientists in
another part of the country. They will be able to ask questions and
communicate with these scientists.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original
data and or producing original products as a result of engaging in the
project): Students are in charge of collecting their own data (insects)
and send them to the professions at BugScope
c. Higher-order thinking: Students can think like a scientist and believe
they have some hands-on with using a microscope. They are also
expected to ask questions during the video chat.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care
about their product: After this activity, students are expected to
publish their findings on the class website.

What Level of Technology Implementation best describes this learning activity and
Why?
This activity reached the LoTi level 5 since students are sharing their findings with
scientists outside of the classroom and viewers of the class website. On their
own, the students gather their own data and collaboration with peers and
mentors outside of the classroom.
How could you implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with
your districts Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies?
Students parents will need to sign off an all parts of the project, and would have
to comply with FERPA and CIPA. The project would also have to comply with
district, county, school and personal teacher policies.
