We ride the Ring in the Clubsport S
THE NURBURGRING
Nordschleife isnt playing
ball for Volkswagens record
attempt in mid-March. The
air is cold, the clouds are
dark and the track is greasy.
Today is not the day for
sub-eight-minute laps of
the 13-mile track. Still, an
opportunity to experience a
306bhp Golf GTI, even from
the passenger seat on a dank
day, isnt one to pass up.
At the wheel is Benny
Leuchter, Volkswagens
driver for the record attempt
and something of a Ring
veteran, with various VLN
and Nrburgring 24-hour
successes to his name. He
apologises for what will be
a comparatively tame lap,
tightens his harnesses and
fires us out of the pit lane.
Key to a quick lap here,
says Leuchter, is to use as
much kerb as possible, to
straighten the corners and
minimise how much speed is
lost. His driving style reflects
that, the Golf pounding into
the kerbs in the Hatzenbach
section as it winds left and
right before Flugplatz. Its
no exaggeration to say the
Golf is remarkable here,
at the tourist days, I see a lot
of competitors cars. We would
like to see more of our cars.
At present theres no word
on availability or pricing for the
Golf GTI Clubsport S, although
Volkswagen expects the UK to
be its biggest market.
Given its level of
performance, the Clubsport S
will face rivals such as the Ford
Focus RS and Mercedes-AMG
A45, and with a 3380 gap
between a standard three-door
Golf GTI and the equivalent
Clubsport, it is likely that a
similar or possibly greater
premium will separate the
regular Clubsport and the S.
As a limited-edition model,
Dynamic judgements
from the passenger seat are
always tricky, but beyond
the fantastic suspension
damping, its interesting to
note the Golfs neutrality,
too. It slithers into oversteer
on some of the really greasy
sections under trees, but for
the most part it stays true to
Leuchters commands, any
lifts progressively tightening
the line rather than snapping
the car around.
The behaviour of the VAQ
diff is familiar through many
corners, pulling the car away
from the apex ferociously
after a momentary delay,
but its responses seem that
much sharper and the whole
car more agile than any of
the other fast Golfs, or rivals
such as the hot Seat Leon.
Despite a lap at far less
than flat-out pace, its
evident that the Clubsport
S has incredible track
potential. Its the suspension
tuning that shines through
most clearly, and that bodes
well for an entertaining car
on lumpy British roads.
Lets hope that this initial
promise delivers when we
get to drive it. MB
VWs engineers
congratulate Benny
Leuchter on his record

What did you think of the preproduction Golf GTI Clubsport S when
you first drove it at the Nrburgring?
Straight from the beginning I could
sense the potential. It wasnt like
other road cars here; it was much
more stable at speed. I could take
the kerbs and it was smooth over the
bumps. The engineers had already
done a very good job.

n increasingly digital
future is vital for
Mercedes-Benz if the
brand is to remain a
leading force in the motor
industry, according to sales and
marketing boss Ola Kllenius,
talking to Autocar at the recent
New York show.
Almost all businesses in
all industries are going digital,
so you have to stay ahead,
he said. If you visit the CES
[Consumer Electronics Show]
in Las Vegas, a few years ago
there were no cars there. Now
there are lots of cars, and even
the tech companies have cars
on their stands. There will be
tremendous development over
the next five to 10 years.
Kllenius explained that
as part of Mercedes big push
for digitalisation, it created
Mercedes Me, an online portal
and app designed to make
it easier for customers to
do things such as book car
servicing or an appointment
at a dealership.
You can configure a car or
even order one online, so we
are already making it easier
to be part of the Mercedes
experience with this online
ecosystem, Kllenius said.
Digitalisation will also help
to improve the experience
of customers when they are
on the move, with Kllenius
citing recent improvements
to car connectivity as a key
area for car-to-X development.
Car-to-X communication
involves vehicles swapping
information with other vehicles
electronically, as well as with
traffic infrastructure.
Kllenius said: Now were
going from 3G to 4G to 5G, you
will have the best connectivity
wherever you are. It means our
models can communicate with
your phone, each other and
even our back-end servers.
However, this investment
in internet-based technology
is not expected to lead to a
decrease in traditional face-toface services and systems.
When it comes to the
customer touch point selling
cars, servicing cars the
key is to do both [digital and
physical], said Kllenius. I
think especially for a luxury
brand like Mercedes, the
human touch is maybe even
more important today to
set us apart.
Kllenius described the
recently expanded Mercedes
Me network of stores as brand
experience clubhouses
that apply the same logic to
customer service as Louis
Vuitton stores do.
With Louis Vuitton, you get
your own personal experience
when you walk around, with a
shop assistant there to help
you, he said. Really, its just
an experience to be there.
SAM SHEEHAN
Vision Tokyo concept previewed fuel cell tech tipped for 2017
OLA KLLENIUS BELIEVES
Mercedes could consider
creating an eco-focused
sub-brand to rival the likes
of BMWs i division, but he
thinks the company should
first continue to focus
on expanding its fleet of
plug-in hybrid and zeroemissions models.
What were going to
do in terms of the road
to zero emissions
is invest heavily in
alternative drivelines and
electrification, he said.
Thats a very wide strategy,
but it means that by the end
of next year we will have

which, I think, is the widest

UK car industry
must attract talent
A SHORTAGE OF production
engineers and designers is
most likely to prevent the UK
car industry from hitting its
all-time manufacturing record
by 2020 although the latest
figures suggest it remains
on track to hit that target if
an estimated 38,000 extra
workers can be found to deliver
the necessary growth.
Official Society of Motor
Manufacturers and Traders
(SMMT) figures reveal that
10.3% more cars were made in
the first three months of this
year than in the same period
last year. A total of 443,581
cars were built between
January and the end of March,
equating to around one car
Confidential
MERCEDES-BENZ BOSS
Dieter Zetsche has said his
companys drive to perfect
autonomous driving is nearly
complete. There are still some
issues when it is dark, wet or
icy, but the basic challenge
is solved, he said. However,
he acknowledges that, like
everyone else, Mercedes
must wait for network
infrastructures to be built
and legislative frameworks
to be changed before the
dream of fully autonomous
driving can be realised.

I think it will be very hard

Mullers beliefs are

Forty-three of the 50

IT IS UNDERSTOOD that
the new Peugeot pick-up,
announced by PSA Group
CEO Carlos Tavares at the
recent unveiling of his latest
expansion plans, could be
based on the 301 saloon
(below) already sold in
developing markets. Peugeot
boss Maxime Picat said he
wants to build on the success
of the 301, which sells around
100,000 units a year in China

pick-up would be a recreation
of one of Peugeots most
successful developing-world

CHINA
Chinese new car buyers are already moving on
from traditional saloons to SUVs, echoing a trend
that has taken hold in Western markets. The
hot sellers in China this year will be affordable
five-seat compact crossovers, typified by models
like the Baojun 560. So popular are they that 4.3
million the same size as the UK and French new
car markets combined will be sold this year.
However, the 2016 increase will slow to 7.5%,
compared with the 40% market growth in 2015.
Again, in context, a slow 7.5% is twice the growth
forecast for the entire French car market this year.
A second SUV segment, for sub-compact models,
is also on fire in China, although the numbers are
smaller. The 4.1-metre-long Jianghuai Refine S2
is the prime example. Last year, one million
sub-compact SUVs were sold, almost twice as
many as in 2014, thanks to numerous launches.

AUSTRALIA
Australias new car market this year is one of
contrasts: declining sales of the traditional V8
saloons that have come to define Aussie motoring
since the 1960s against the rising popularity of
full-sized, family-friendly SUVs. In number terms,
that means saloons heading for a near 6% drop
while SUVs enjoy a 17% rise. By 2017, nearly two
big SUVS will be sold for every big saloon. Back in
2014, it was one for one.
Thanks to low fuel prices, V8s are still popular.
For example, the new Ford Mustang enjoys a
60% bias in favour of the V8. GMs Holden brand,
meanwhile, has pulled back on the launch of the
Camaro,
a , which now looks set for a 2022 debut.

EUROPE
Modest growth is expected in the large and diverse
European car market in 2016. For wider trends, its
worth looking at specific markets. Europes biggest
car market, Germany, will almost flatline this
tyear, with predicted growth of 1.2%, down from
the 5.8% rise of last year.
The real story, though, is Italy. It is expected to
add an extra 111,000 new cars this year. Buyers
who have put off sales are now returning to the
market as the effects of the recession subside.
Like Germans, Italians are flocking to B-segment
(supermini-sized) SUVs, which are expected to
take one in
i nine new car sales in Italy this
th year.

Fords latest Sync2 system is included on the RS,

however, youll have to pay for it, the additional

that also adds a 10-speaker Sony system (including
subwoofer) and a rear-view camera. Our test car
came with the appropriate box ticked, and wed
recommend that you pay the modest premium.
Fords navigation is hardly peerless (theres a
colossal amount of very small buttons to push for a
start), but the Sync home screen looks a bit forlorn
without it included. Generally speaking, it all works
fine, and the decision to keep the Drive Mode
button a physical characteristic of the centre
console is a prudent one.

The price of the four-wheel drive system is the deletion of the cars underfloor
storage and the trimmed load volume. Were hardly complaining, though.
ON THE ROAD
its inferior to the plush cabins of
the Audi RS3 and Mercedes-AMG
A45, its better kitted out and more
modern than, say, the Renault
Mgane RS 275.
The regular Focus underpinnings
and the five doors that come with
it guarantee a respectable level of
practicality. The encumbrance of an
all-wheel drive system underneath
hasnt reduced the cars ability to
carry adults, although the boot
volume is slightly reduced by the
more sophisticated rear axle.
The RS gets a new, nicely
proportioned flat-bottomed steering
wheel, alloy pedals, slightly different
instrument graphics and a lot of blue
stitching. It also wears the same bank
of gauges atop the dash as the ST.
The most notable additions are the
front seats, either in the shape of the
standard, part-leather sports seats
or (as with our test car) the optional
Signature RS Recaro shell versions.
These are fairly splendid, although
they commit a familiar Focus sin by
PERFORMANCE
AAAAB
Its impossible to come to a car
such as the Focus RS without big
expectations, both subjective and
objective. Only considerably more
expensive and more powerful cars,
such as the RS3 and A45, prevent
your enthusiasm from running away
with itself, and then only by the
narrowest of margins.
Well deal with the subjective
impressions first: how fast does
the new RS really feel? Given its
head, youd say about as quick as
an 80,000 sports car until you
hit fourth gear. As strong as an
RS3, probably the most heroically
TRACK NOTES
To unearth the secrets of the Focus RS,
you really need to be on a circuit. Sadly,
the day we set aside to do it started
out wet and got even wetter, but that
still gives half an idea, at more sensible
speeds, of what the RS is capable of.
In any mode, its possible to
overwhelm the front tyres on the way
into a corner. Turn in too fast and youll
get mild understeer, but even then
theres the option of working through it,
which cant be said of many rivals. Lift,
or brake gently, and the front comes
into line. Then, after a brief pause while
everything works itself up, lots of power
will unstick the rear. The BMW M135i is
the only other hot hatch to do that.
In any mode Drift or not
what then follows is a brief spell of
sidewaysness while the 4WD system
apportions power to the front and
drags itself out. Its more WRC or GT-R
drift than Ken Block or RWD drift, and
all the modes do likewise, just with
gradually more slip and less electronic
interference. Its ferocious and rapid,
not full-on dramatic and smokey.

Grip in the wet, on Cup tyres, is

SPEC ADVICE
Mechanically, there are
no options that make
a notable difference.
The sportiest seats and
uprated stereo/nav
may be worth the extra
outlay for resale value;
otherwise, fill your boots.
he Focus RS theme is finally established. The RS isnt an easy car to live with its too thirsty,
its seats are too high and the opportunities to exploit its handling are not ever-present. But
if the modern interpretation of RS has finally established itself as anything, its occasional,
high-end pleasure. To find something that corners with the same ability, breathtaking
confidence and mind-bending mechanical trickery, you have to look at a car like the Nissan GT-R.
Ford, which specialises in democratising hot hatch fun (take a bow, Fiesta ST), has democratised
specialness and uniqueness; it has created a hot hatch that you might buy just for weekend use, as
you perhaps would a high-end sports or supercar, yet its one that costs only 30,000 brand new.
No other hot hatch can quite do that. Yes, a Honda Civic Type R is raucous and raw and a BMW
M135i slithery and entertaining. Want a great everyday hot hatch? The Volkswagen Golf R is your
choice. But the Focus, when in its element, is in another league, and to hell with the compromises.

Once I had got over the outrageous price
of the Land Rover Discovery Sport and
the ho-hum verdict on the Ingenium
engine, I was still rather interested in one
fact (Our Cars, 23 March). If Land Rover
stuck a V6 in it, I would probably buy
one. But whats this? Just 31mpg from a
diesel and with a ridiculously small tank?
I wouldnt have been happy with that
from the V6, and how can such a big car
warrant a tank that size?

REPEAT AFTER ME
How often when driving on unfamiliar
roads, especially semi-rural ones, have
you wondered what the speed limit is?
With speed limits now set on the
whims and fancies of local councillors,
the road environment doesnt give much
of a clue, and it is easy to miss a speed
limit sign. So the humble repeater sign
is one of the most useful of road signs.
But changes to regulations mean that
highway authorities are no longer legally
required to use them.
With good driving now seen in
official circles as just sticking to the
speed limit, one wonders why this useful
sign has been consigned to history. The
cynic in me says this has been brought
about by the powerful and influential
speed camera industry as a revenue
generation opportunity.
