Essential Question: How can breast cancer be detected in early stages?
Working Thesis: All men and women need early detection for breast cancer.
Refined Thesis: All men and women need to self-examination and discuss their family medical
history with their physician.
Service Annotated Bibliography
America Cancer Society. N.p.: American Cancer Society, 2003. Print.
This article describes about American Cancer Society that explain the three parts
action plan. For example mammogram it is most important action that women makes and it is a
simple x-ray for the breast and it is easier and safe. The mammogram has less radiation than the
dentists x-ray. It gives the women a head start for treatments. Now the breast exam is when the
doctor or a nurse exam your breast. All women should have breast exam in their 20s and 30s.
Also the doctor or nurse will give a pamphlet to explain how to do breast self-exam. Men and
women but mostly women should act right away so they can live their own life and staying
healthy. Breast cancer can be treated successfully if women has an early examination and they
will have better chance for getting the treatment. But keep in mind that breast cancer can come at
any age also after the age of 40. So if women report any change in the breast the women should
go there doctor right away. I choose this article to help people to test themselves for cancer.

The article of Arimidex talks about the understanding of breast cancer stages. Stage 0
is abnormal or the cancer cells are presented in the breast lobule or the duct. But they have not
spread to the fatty tissue and surrounded it. The stage is also known as lobular carcinoma or
ductal carcinoma. Stage 1 is when the cancer spread to the lobules or ducts and close to the tissue
of the breast. The breast cancer stage is nowhere close to be harmful. The second stage is when
the tumor is measured about 2 cm or less than 5 cm in a diameter. Sometimes the lymph nodes
probably not involved with this stage. Stage 3A talks about the growth of tumor like it can grow
to 5 cm or greater diameter and 2 inches or greater. The cancer cells can grow faster and goes to
the underarm lymph nodes. Stages 3B and 3C is locally advanced cancer that the tumor could be
any size but it spreads into the skin of the breast. The tumor can spread to the chest tissue or near
the collarbone. Stage 4 is metastatic cancer that has spread inside the breast and other body parts
like bones, liver, lungs, or brain. I chose this article because all women need to be aware how
serious the stages of cancer are and how deadly it can become.

Breast Health Center. Murrells Inlet: EduCare, 2006. Print

The article is Breast Health Center talks about tumor markers also the Estrogen (ER)
and Progesterone Receptors (PR). The molecules can have a higher amounts than normal
amounts in the blood, urine, or body tissues and it depends on person that has a certain type of
breast cancer. The tumor is measured by levels and it useful when a person is going to have an xray or other test like the diagnosis of the disease and monitoring of treatment. Taking a blood test
it is risk free and it is easy. If HER2 is higher than normal levels, then the physician knows that
the drug of Herceptin is necessary to use. The Estrogen and Progesterone Receptors are
recommended to measure the tumor on every new patient that is diagnosed by breast cancer. The
S phase and DNA determines how fast is the tumor of dividing and when to remove the breast.

HER2 or neu gene is also a part of tumor marker. This gene can increase some tumors to spread
around the breast and Herceptin is recommend including the chemotherapy to treat the cancer.
This article is important because everyone needs to understand the signs of early cancer
detection.
