Article Name: _The Problems with the Common Core

Date: 9/23/16

What is the article about? What challenge(s) or question(s) does it address?

A critique of the Common Core and its effectiveness. How it affects students in a
lower socioeconomic level. Questions presented are: Is the Common Core is an
educational or capitalist endeavor? Who controls public education?
This article reminded me of
The articles that were published in the 80s about the Gifted and Talented Education
Program (GATE) and how it would change the face of education in public schools by
implementation of a more competitive curriculum and reformation of pedagogy.

This article made me wonder if.

The Common Core Standards are actually designed to implement change in
pedagogy or consistently monitor and further subjugate underperforming schools in
urban areas to scrutiny in an attempt to reclaim state run schools and deconstruct
them until the neighborhood are fully gentrified.

The most important thing I want to share from this article

A lower level of resources are aloted to schools in urban school districts so that the
product, lower performing students justifies the means...defunding and eventually
shutting down schools that serve large urban neighborhoods.

How will this article impact my teaching?

This article will help me to start dialogues with parents and students about opting
out of standardized testing. I will be honest with students about how standardized
testing is really designed to impact them.
