Introduction

Signature Assignment First Draft | Pompa & Patton

Per the Mayo Clinic, Obesity which is a complex disorder that consist of excessive
amount of body fat affects more than a quarter of U.S Americans; Including children. The longterm effects from obesity include type 2 diabetes, heart diseases, and bone and joint diseases
from the excess pressure the human body wasnt built to stand. An uncomfortable health result
the authors want to discuss is the unfortunate path to myocardial infarctions which in other
words are heart attacks. Mathew Pompa and Emily Patton are both students in Arizona State
Universitys teachers college and both propose an innovative health education plan immersed
with healthy dietary preparation plans to have a positive effect on the community they teach for.
In order for our piloted health program to successfully impact the lives of teachers, students, and
parents in a healthy manner that will work to reduce obesity amongst children and adults we
have developed a whole program breakdown. Health programs in any business or school cost
money, we have strategized a thorough marketing plan to project funding that will not touch the
school allocated budget. The administration will play a major role in launching this program but,
the committee will consist of teachers and parents.
Marketing
In order to promote this program, we will send out weekly flyers every Friday a month
before the start of our program, which will be November 8th. The flyers will include useful
information such tips on maintaining your weight and a schedule of the program. The flyers will
also include alternative food options to help guide participants on healthier choices. The overall
goal of these flyers will be to promote awareness and engagement in our holistic initiative to
promote a healthier lifestyle with an indirect goal to reduce childhood and adult obesity.
As fitness leaders for the schools we will be teaching at, Emily and I will raise money
from our fellow teachers by having a Maintain to Gain initiation fee. Ideally we would hope to
have at least 50 participants for this weight management challenge with an incentive to lose

weight and win rewards. The challenge will only be 10 to enroll which could raise up to $500.00
allocated to spend on rewards such as gift cards. We will encourage students to participate but,
with no initiation fee and the incentive to win a homework pass or free time.
Funding
Like mentioned before, our administration will play a major role in the success of our
program. We have generated a letter of proposal to our administration; Dear Administration,
studies have found that on average, Americans gain 5 pounds during the holiday season. As
teachers who are dedicated to helping our students and colleagues reach success not only in an
academic stance but, also through an overall health stance we want to promote weight
management throughout the holiday seasons. Ms.Patton and Mr.Pompa propose an friendly
weight management competition for teachers and students called Maintain to Gain. This
program includes a nutritional guide for meals, fitness plans, and fun for all. The best part of this
is that it doesnt require any financial resources from the school and it will not affect class time.
Maintain to Gain is designed to combat child and adult obesity through friendly competition in a
formal learning environment; a school. The goal of the Maintain to Gain challenge is to
maintain one's weight during the holiday season to gain rewards such as PTO and gift cards. All
participants will be weight at the beginning of November for entry weight and at the beginning
of December for end results. All participants would pay to participate which is where the funding
for gift cards will come from. Whoever loses the most weight during these two months could win
third place, second place, or first place.
Our Maintain to Gain program is designed to include a nutritional dietary guide to help
substitute unhealthy food choices for healthy food choices. Some substitutions can be the
difference in losing a couple pounds a week to staying having a consistent weight throughout the
holidays. We will list healthy substitutions for baking such as replacing sugar with unsweetened
applesauce for baked goods and educating our participants on the health difference from using

brown rice versus white rice. Our goal is to educate our colleagues and students on a life
changing nutrition that would hopefully be used throughout their future. Those that are
participating are aware of maintaining their weight throughout the holidays. There are rewards
for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. There will be all sorts of prizes. For students there could
be free homework passes, free lunch pass, or eat with the teacher. Then for the staff they might
receive an extra half hour for a planning period. Maybe a teacher's aide or substitute will come in
and allow the teacher to have a little extra time. Also staff might receive free lunch, gift card to a
grocery store for them to purchase healthy foods to continue to maintain after the holidays.
We will create a Maintain to Gain Facebook page where we can check in on our
participants as well as keep them motivated. This Facebook page will allow others to have a way
to communicate via Facebook Messenger. Here there will be daily posts of inspirational quotes
offering an extra push to maintain that weight. Also the timelines and event calendars from
scheduling will be posted so everyone is aware of what is coming up. In addition to the schedule
being posted also the weekly flyer will be posted too incase people misplaced it.
A national study by Yanovski J, Yanovski S, Sovik K, Nguyen T, O'Neil P, Sebring N
focused on finding the average weight gained during the holiday season. The study A
prospective study of holiday weight gain had concluded in their research that most Americans
gain on average 5 pounds. The authors wanted to roll out their health education plan during the
most vulnerable time for Americans are most likely to gain weight; the holidays. Pompa and
Patton propose a holiday challenge that is designed to promote weight management or even
weight reduction through Maintain to Gain. The weigh in portion will begin November 11th
and end January 8th. The educational portion will continue throughout the entire school year.
Our overall goal is to give people the tools to be successful through an holistic health
initiative program. Our program aims to provide people of all backgrounds a collection of

Signature Assignment First Draft | Pompa & Patton

methods, resources, and support groups to help assist with childhood and adult obesity. With the
help of our school administration we plan on rolling out a dynamic health care program on the
start of the most difficult time of the year; the holidays. We plan on having people participate and
be completely immersed in our program in order to better themselves physically and spiritually.
Our program will be introduced as a friendly competition to maintain or lose weight throughout
the holiday season and will follow with months of a strong educational goal to create awareness
on childhood and adult obesity. There will be classes that educate teachers, students and parents
about nutrition and dieting. There will free physical activities that will be manageable for all
body types and disabilities.

The first year will obviously be our prototype but, throughout the years we hope to
advance our program to a more holistic program that any school would love to initiate in. Our
program will sustain itself by keeping all resources and cost to a minimal. We strive to improve
the lives we encounter at any of the schools we venture out to teach at someday. The hope is to
not only use this program to encourage others to remain healthy and educated about serious
health factors specifically obesity but initially we want to prepare everyone for the holiday
seasons in a healthy way. Maintaining weight throughout the holidays is difficult but, through
our program, its possible. We will continue to roll out the program throughout the rest of the
school year with a healthy curriculum in place.
Conclusion
Lastly, this program will not only physically push the participants to lose weight and
maintain the weight they're comfortable with but, it will have a greater long term impact through
future informative decisions making when it comes their health. We will know the impact of our

Signature Assignment First Draft | Pompa & Patton

health program through the results of our participants. We project that obesity will greatly be
reduced as a direct result of our maintain to gain health program which will be piloted at our
schools hopefully as soon as next year.
