Abstract

Trinidad and Tobagos Atlantic basin has been a prospect for the discovery of
hydrocarbons for over 30 years. Although work has been conducted in this
basin, scientists never explored depths exceeding 1000 metres. Initially, the
deep-water

blocks

were

explored

using

two

dimensional

(2D) seismic data, which along with gravity and magnetic surveys were
successful in providing understanding of the structural and stratigraphic
settings of the blocks. In 1998, however, three dimensional (3D) seismic
surveys were introduced to explore blocks 25a, 25b, 26 and 27. From the
data obtained, a total of eight wells were drilled but none were found to have
sufficient hydrocarbon accumulations. The data also provided a better
understanding of the effects of shale diapirism on the hydrocarbon system
and

the

within

the

area.

The

misinterpretation of this basin by comparing it to the Gulf of Mexico

contributed to the unsuccessful results obtained. It was found that
deepwater drilling posed as a major challenge as problems due to current,
shallow hazards and well problems were encountered which contributed to
the inability of all wells to reach total depth. In future, greater attention
should be paid on the effects of shale diapirism on sedimentation and the
role of the tectonic setting of the basin.
