Describe the community service/ professional activity/s you attended or

participated with (be specific about the purpose and your role):
The first activity that I attended was a mass casualty workshop at the Tucson Fire
Department. This workshop taught nursing students valuable information about what to do
during a mass casualty. It taught students how to properly apply tourniquets and other wound
dressing in the field. It also taught students how to talk down shooters, if ever faced with one.
Overall, the purpose of this activity was to prepare students about emergency situations that are
not in a hospital setting and how to ensure personal safety while helping as many people as
possible. The students role was to actively engage in activities and ensure comprehension about
the material being presented.
In addition the the mass casualty workshop, I also attended an Inter-professional
Education and Practice (IPEP) activity at St. Lukes Home. This activity included nursing,
medical, pharmacy and social work students from the University of Arizona. Interdisciplinary
teams were formed including a few students from each college. The purpose of this activity was
to educate residents at St. Lukes Home about poly-pharmacy, review medications with elders
and ensure that all the medications they are taking are safe. My role was to work with the
pharmacy and medical students while reviewing medications and provide the residents with
recommendations about their medications.

Where was this held and what was the program/activity length?

The mass casualty workshop was held at the Tucson Fire Station located in downtown
Tucson. The workshop was four hours in length. The IPEP activity was held at St. Lukes Home,
located on Adams Street. This activity was four hours and included a pre-conference, activity,
and post conference.
Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).
Both of these experiences were very valuable to me. I really enjoyed the mass casualty
workshop, as we have had very little training in health emergency training. I feel much more
prepared to help in an emergency situation now. I felt that the IPEP was a very valuable
educational experience as well. Collaborating with other health care professionals was a great
opportunity and I felt that we really made a difference for the health and wellness of the elders at
St. Lukes Home.
Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in
the future; why or why not? (Describe)
I would definitely recommend this activity in the future. Although nursing school has
been very educational, these extra activities afforded us new learning opportunities and allowed
us to be involved within the local community. Overall, I was very happy that I was able to
participate in these additional activities.
