Generations Project

Introduction
I am Yijia, a 7th grader at Alan B. Shepard Middle School. The presentation is
about music from 1910 to now. I interviewed my mother for her musical interests
when she was my age.

In the 1930s the most popular type of music was jazz

When listening to swing you cant help but to dance your heart out
It usually consists of a strong, rhythmic beat with a low bass tune and a vocal improve
or section
Its more complex.
The African American culture is most popular in this style
It began to lose its popularity in World War II due to a decrease in musicians that went
to war and the increase of expensive war economics.

Benny Swing was leading musician in swing

He got the name King of Swing because of the contribution to swing
He was a composer who played the clarinet and had multiple hit singles as a
bandleader before World War II.
At the age of 14, he joined the American Federation of Musicians
In the 1930's his popularity reached its peak
This lead to his creation of many hits
He became the first jazz musician to play in Carnegie Hall.

Themes are often about African Americans trying to get freedom and joy
R&B bands usually consisted of piano, one or two guitars, bass, drums,
saxophone, and sometimes background vocalists

Rock was a mix of rhythm, blues, country, western styles, and rockabilly
There were many elements of rock in music styles dating all the way back to the 1920s
and 30s
The person who invented rock is under debate
However, there was one song by the name of Rock around the clock by Bill Haley
that got to the top of the Billboard chart
This style of music changed the trajectory of our society
Rock has contributed in many ways to all the ideas and ways of life that we use now in
our times

1990 - Grunge - Style - William

Grunge was originated by the Pacific Northwest

Its known for its wry guitar sounds, stoic lyrics, flannel shirts and DIY ethos
It was influenced by the style of punk rock
The style developed on its own apart from other big cities including New York City
Seattle was the home base for Grunge But Grunge couldnt stay enclosed for a too long
period of time.
When the band Nirvana began making more songs, they topped the charts
This style was credited as a new punk style never heard for 20 long years

They all had challenging childhoods and later met together to form
They all had a taste for a new sensation of music, and was introduced to this
new music from Seattle.
Kurt Cobain, the leader was considered to be a genius
After drug addiction, health problems and depression he felt that life wasnt
worth anything so he committed suicide.
Previously, before this terrible incident, after making many albums and
labels, Nirvana helped contribute to a critical stage of music movement

It have a careful balance of pop accessibility with noise, experimentation

A popular music genre in the 2010s is pop music. Pop is originated in the
Western world as softer version of rock and roll. Pop music have an aim of
appealing the general audience rather than one specific sub-culture. Pop also
emphasis on recording, production, and technology instead of live performance.
A popular pop music artist include Justin Timberlake.

She likes the rhythm of the song
Different style and performance style from the traditional songs
She liked Chinese Folk song when she was 15, in the year 1989
The music she liked changed to English songs when she was in College
She says as people age and mature, their choice of music change
Also, the environment have some impact, when more genres begin to pop
up, the younger people choose to listen to that
