Welcome to Math 7 at Middle School! I look forward to being your teacher for an exciting year of
learning and exploring our world through mathematical concepts. This letter is designed to introduce
you to the Math 7 curriculum and to give you some tips on how to be successful.

MATH GOALS
Conceptual Understanding - Comprehending mathematical concepts, operations, and
relationships.
Computation- Carrying out mathematical procedures accurately, flexibly, efficiently, and
appropriately, showing perseverance when challenged.
Application - Being able to formulate problems mathematically and develop strategies for
solving them using appropriate concepts and procedures.
Reasoning - Using logic to explain or justify a solution to a problem.
Engagement- Seeing mathematics as fun, relevant, useful and worth personal effort.
Collaboration Working together with other students to analyze and solve mathematical
challenges.
Communication Using math vocabulary to share mathematical ideas both verbally and in
written format.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
We are very excited to be using the 7th grade Glencoe Math curriculum! The text is aligned with the
new Common Core State Standards for math and is supported by wonderful online resources. A focus
on real world application of math concepts should make learning fun for students and improve
understanding. Topics covered in the curriculum include the number system, expressions and
equations, functions, geometry, and statistics and probability.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
In the class, as in the school, our rules are the 6 Ps. Students should be; Prompt, Polite, Productive,
Prepared, Positive and Proud. We will follow the discipline plan as stated in the planner and as
discussed in class.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
Students are expected to come to class prepared with the following items EVERYDAY:
Glencoe TEXTBOOK (issued by the school)
Graph Paper COMPOSITION NOTEBOOK and/or BINDER (Very important!!!)
Sharpened PENCILS with erasers
COLORED PENS or PENCILS (for grading and graphing)
MMS Student PLANNER
inch GRAPH PAPER (if the composition book is not graph paper)

HOMEWORK
Homework will typically be assigned daily. The homework will be in the form of textbook work,
worksheets, or projects.
Homework is normally due the following class period. As the study of mathematics is
sequential, it is important that students do their work on time.
Students will be expected to check/review their own homework and ask any questions they
may have in class. Very short homework quizzes may be given or homework may be asked to be
handed in for a quiz grade, on occasion.
Late homework will NOT have a penalty attached and must be handed in BEFORE THE CLOSE OF
THE UNIT.
It is suggested that students who have been absent attend Study Club to catch up on missed
lessons. It is the STUDENTS responsibility to find out what was missed and to complete both the
homework AND class work.
All coursework should be kept throughout the year and will be a valuable resource for cumulative
exams and Smarter Balance review.

ASSESSMENT
Students will have mid-chapter quizzes and a final test for every chapter.
Students will have the opportunity to correct quizzes/tests OR request a re-take up until the end
of the semester.

SUPPORTING STUDENT SUCCESS

The Middle School experience in general and math, specifically, can be challenging for some students.
Here are a few ways that you can help support your student and nurture his/her success:
1. Encourage your student to stay organized, be on time, and work hard. These are life skills that
everyone needs.
2. Provide a quiet place at home for your student to focus on homework and studying.
3. Check your students Planner. Students are expected to write down the daily assignments and due
dates in their planners. I also post a weekly update of the Math 7 assignments on my class web
site.
4. Check your students grades weekly on Skyward. You and your student will both receive a
password to access the grades online.
5. Encourage your student to request a re-take or complete quiz/test corrections if needed.
6. Remind your student to pick up and complete his or her make-up work after an absence.
7. Encourage your student to stay for Study Club for extra help or after absences to make up
assignments. A school-wide Study Hall will be held in our library on Monday-Thursday from 2:353:45. Bus transportation is available.

I look forward to a terrific year of growth and learning with your student! Please feel free to contact
me with any concerns, comments or questions. This syllabus will be available online and will be
attached inside your students math notebooks front cover. Complete the portion below and return it
with your student. Thank you for your cooperation!
