To Whom It May Concern:
I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation for Mr. Sean Chester. Mr. Chester plans to
graduate December 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of
Arizona, College of Nursing. My association with Mr. Chester began May 2015, when he
approached me asking for an opportunity to join my research team for a project exploring nurse-tonurse communication.
My current research project is funded to study nurse communication of patients who experience
sudden and unexpected changes in patient condition. Our project, SCH: Enhancing Nurse
Decision-making via Augmented Communication Tools (ACTs) (NSF/NIH Smart and Connected
Health, NIH/National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering 1R01EB020395-01)
seeks to increase effective nurse-to-nurse communication. Mr. Chesters role with this project is to
collect data and assist with the analysis. As the principle investigator, it is my role to over see all
facets of the project including, verifying that the research protocol is followed. I observed Mr.
Chester while collecting data and found that he not only adhered to the research protocol, and was
very effective in communicating with the nurses for recruitment, answering questions, and
presented himself as a professional. I was very impressed with his humility and respect during the
process.
For a period of time during the project, Mr. Chester was the only undergraduate student working on
the team. I observed him in our project meetings listening to those with more clinical experience
and contributing in a manner that was very valuable to the project. Eventually, another
undergraduate joined the project. Mr. Chester did a great job of training the person to the project,
their role, and trouble shooting with data collection. Our new member has gained independence at
an earlier pace, in no doubt due to Mr. Chesters guidance.
My hope as a nurse scientist is when a research assistant embodies what the study seeks to address
in health care. A fellow clinical faculty member informed me that they observed Mr. Chester at a
clinical site, where he is employed; emerge as a leader during a situation when a patient
experienced a sudden change in condition. Mr. Chester not only responded to the situation and
supported the students who were in attendance, but also explained that this is exactly what he has
been working on as a research assistant (my study), and from this project, understood the
importance of effectively caring for the patient and communicating the event. I am enormously
proud of Mr. Chester and this only confirms what I already knew about him.
Mr. Chesters attention to detail has strengthened our project. I have enjoyed working with Mr.
Chester and I am convinced he will be a strong contributor to any health care organization. I am in
a conflicted situation, knowing he is graduating and will leave our project; yet, there are patients
who will benefit for having him as their nurse. I have had the privilege of working with an
emerging leader and talented clinician. It is without hesitation or reservation that I recommend Mr.
Chester to join your organization.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance towards recruiting Mr. Chester for your
organization.
Sincerely,

Jane M. Carrington, PhD, RN
