Fact Sheet Our Mission We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experiencebased curriculum which creatively integrates running. How We Started Girls on the Run was established in 1996. The first Girls on the Run team was in Charlotte, North Carolina and was made up of thirteen girls. Four years later, in 2000 Girls on the Run International began. Today, 20 years later, there is a Girls on the Run council in all 50 states. What We Do Girls on the Run is a program for 3rd-8th graders that teaches girls to be uniquely themselves. Through interactive running games, girls learn that they can accomplish a goal, be confident in who they are and how to work with a team, all while training for a 5k. At the end of the 10-week program, a 5k event is held with the goal of celebrating each and every girl and her accomplishments. Our Service In 2015, Girls on the Run served more than 179,000 girls across 225 different councils. Those councils completed more than 12,000 community service projects. Girls on the Run had more than 98,000 volunteers who helped make this happen. Ways to Get Involved There are several different ways to get involved and make a difference with Girls on the Run. All teams are led by volunteer coaches that help lead interactive lessons and facilitate coaching over the 10-week process. Volunteers can also sign up to be running buddies the day of the end of the
season 5k. People can also donate to help provide scholarships to allow girls to participate in the program.
