Sheep Lecture

Fall semester 2016

Description:
This artifact consists of a graded speech I gave in my speech for educators class. I
gave a speech about a breed a sheep that I own. I talked to a group of individuals
that that ranged from 19 to 22. I taught the students about Katahdin sheep. I taught
them how to take care of them and how they were developed. I dementated my
knowledge about them by giving a lecture about Katahdin sheep. I showed videos
and pictures I took myself of Katahdin sheep.
Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
This experience best aligns with standard 1, Content: Teachers know the subject
they are teaching. The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry,
and structures of the disciplines she or he teaches and can create learning
experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils.
The lecture I gave in speech class best fits with standard 1, because I got the
opportunity to teach students about Katahdin sheep. I had the chance to teach
students about an animal they didnt know about. I own 2 Katahdin sheep so its a
subject matter that is very close to me and I have had a lot of experience taking
care of them. The students I taught had no experiences with sheep and had no idea
what a Katahdin sheep looked like. This experience gave me the opportunity to talk
in front of a group of people and express my ideas in a way that someone with no
prior knowledge could understand. I put a slide show together that helped my
students visualize what I was talking about. I showed them specific pictures on parts
that I was talking about.
This experience has made me competent in standard 1 because I had the chance to
go in front of students and teach them what I know about an animal I have spent a
lot of time with.

Statement Alignment
This artifact best aligns with KSD1.a. Demonstrates knowledge of content and
pedagogy- The candidate displays extensive content knowledge of his/her subject
areas and demonstrates a continuing search for new content knowledge, resources,
and best instructional practices, while understanding student diversity and student
misconceptions and misunderstanding as key to the teaching process.
This KSD best matches what I did for speech class. Teaching students about sheep
was a great opportunity for me to show my knowledge about sheep. Teaching
students that there is a difference between breeds of sheep and that there are a lot
of breeds. I also taught how to take care of them and my experiences from having
two pet sheep. When I describe my sheep as pets it helps the students connect to

their pets. Before giving the lecture, I prepared a speech about knowledge I already
had and research I had done. Some students thought all sheep had wool and that
was a misconception that I corrected.
After this experience, I have learned to keep researching even when you think you
know what your teaching. It has also taught me what is the best way to present the
information Im teaching.

What I learned about teaching/learning form this experience

After teaching a lesson I have learned to better communicate my knowledge in a
way that is understandable for someone without prior knowledge. I have learned to
connect students with the material Im teaching and I have learned to continue to
research to make your lesson accurate.

What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this

experience
What I have learned about myself as a prospective educator is that its important to
teach what you know in a way that students can connect to it. It is also important to
give examples and visuals for students to understand what is being discussed. I
learned that having stories and a connection to the subject matter affects the way it
is taught. I used my own pictures on a PowerPoint that helped show what I was
talking about. I also learned to have pictures and videos and other visuals is great to
bring into a lecture.
