MODERN SLAVERY
IN THE DIAMOND INDUSTRY
Marcelo de Len Carrillo | Alberto Assad Fernandez| Miranda Trevio Grauzas

Defining Slavery in
general.
48.8 million people are
enslaved world wide. 1 out of
3 people enslaved are
children. Slavery worldwide
generates 150 billion illegal
USD each year. (WalkFree)
Slavery is when people are
submitted to forced labor and
they cant choose whether to
wok or not. They receive no
pay and they work in terrible
conditions.

Blood Diamonds
Blood Diamonds these
diamonds are called like that
because they are dug up form
a war zone and then they are
used to finance the military.
(Imogen Calderwood)

Mines using slaves

Children alongside adults are
forced to dig up Blood
Diamonds. These are Children
younger than 11, and children
that are very vulnerable to
injury are working in backbreaking conditions. These
mines are found in Zimbabwe,
Congo and Central African
Republic (Imogen

Solutions & Organizations.

The organisation Walk Free is rescuing Eritrean slaves who
are being submitted to work in a mine in Eritrea. Where they
are forced to pry out various precious materials. They are
getting many people to sign their petition, their goal is to
reach 45k. Currently they hold 36,622 actions taken. The
supreme court of British Columbia and Canada have decided
to take Eritrea to trial over potential abuses on their workers.
(WalkFree). And the United Nations has placed a ban on
conflict diamonds. They also provide peacekeepers, economic
aid and other sources of assistance. There is also a process
known as the Kimberley Process which is a certification
system for monitoring a diamond's origin from the mine, until
it reaches the distributors. The United States is working on
legislation for the Clean Diamond Act. This is act would ban
any diamonds that come from an unknown place that could
contain slavery. (Eric Johnson)

Solution that WE propose.

Human Rights being

Violated
Article 1 All human beings are

born free and equal in dignity

and rights.
Article 2 Everyone is entitled to

First of all, we would raise awareness. Because slavery is going

on around the world and there are many people that dont
know that their everyday objects were made by a slave. Then,
the safest way would be to organize a boycott. So people stop
buying products that were made by slaves. But first there
would need to be an investigation to figure out with
companies use slaves. One of those companies is called De
Beers. It is one of the worlds biggest mining companies and
sadly they use slaves to mine for produce. We encourage
companies that buy products from De Beers, to stop buying
from them, their products are illegal due to the use of slaves.
This is the only way to stop companies like De Beers from
using slaves.

all the rights and freedoms set

forth in this Declaration,
Article 3 Everyone has the right

to life, liberty and security of

person.
Article 4 No one shall be held

in slavery or servitude; slavery

shall be prohibited in all their
forms.
Article 5 No one shall be

subjected to torture or to cruel,

inhuman or degrading
treatment or punishment.
Article 7 All are equal before

the law and are entitled without

any discrimination to equal
protection of the law
Article 20 Everyone has the

right to freedom of peaceful

assembly and association.
Article 23 Everyone has the

right to work, to free choice of

employment, to just and
favourable conditions.
Article 24 Everyone has the

right to rest and leisure,

including reasonable limitation
of working hours and periodic
holidays with pay.

Slaves are deprived of those Human Rights because

they dont get to choose what to do with their life.
Having the right to do and work on what you want is
part of the mots important human rights. Slaves
dont have those rights, and that is wrong.
