Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 5. USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD MEANINGFUL
CURRICULUM Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs use their knowledge of
academic disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive
development and learning for each and every young child. Candidates understand the importance
of developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum.
They know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas, including
academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. Candidates use their
own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging
curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young
child.
Brief Description of Evidence: (include semester completed)
As part of my ECED 103 Curriculum Early Childhood Education course during the Fall
semester of 2016, I made a prop box for the dramatic play area to transform my classroom into
an ice cream shop. With this prop box, lessons can be made in every category math, science,
language arts, manners, creative arts, and even social and emotional foundations.
Analysis of What I Learned:
I learned how to properly implement a unit plan with lessons that are classroom ready. I also
learned how creating a unit plan with the appropriate lessons can be very time consuming and is
not something0 that can be put off until the last minute.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
This prop box with correlating unit plan shows my competence with this NAEYC standard by
consisting of materials and lessons to build an extended curriculum in all areas of the classroom,
starting in the dramatic play area and spreading throughout the classroom and designated
hallway space.
