Compare and contrast in between Earnest Hemingway and William Faulkner:The

comparison

and

contrast

between these two writers can be done by analyzing their

famous stories A rose for Emily. and the snows of Kilimanjaro..

Figurative analysis of -A rose for Emily-:The Figurative language is the literary terms and devices which can be used to describe or
compare things and situations in dramatic way. There are different types of figurative languages such as
similes (comparison of unlike things using as or like), metaphors (the stated comparisons),
alliteration (stylistic mixing of words) and personification (describing things in an easy and
understandable way).
Faulkner used such figurative language in many places to make the story more effective. In the
1st part of the story, the author considered Miss Emilie Greison, one of the characters in the story as a
monument. She was an active part of her community, so after her death the people of that community
visited her as a fallen monument. As we all knows that monuments are considered as one of the
important part of a community. Another metaphor, regarding the tax collections, Emily (the character
name) believes that her taxes are exempted, so when the officials came to collect the taxes, the author
mentioned as She(Emily) vanquished them, horse & foot... The term horse and foot is metaphor
used for battle which is applied here to make a felling to the reader that Emily will go for battle if the
community officials persists to collect her taxes.
Faulkner used similes to narrate the dead body of Emily in a clear way. He used 2 similes. The
writer says that the body has been bloated by a long time submerging in motionless water and her eyes
became dark and tiny like two charcoals pressed on her puffy face. Faulkner used personification to
explain the Emilys home same like the owner of this house as stubborn & coquettish decay.
Figurative Analysis of -The snows of Kilimanjaro-:In this short story, Hemingway used many different types of metaphors to narrate the situations
and incidents. He used these metaphors in a complex grammatical way. The metaphors place an
important role in the story. In particular as connected to disintegration of the main character Mr. Harry
as a creative man and an author. Such narrations can be seen in Harrys leg & the metaphorical
infections of his talents in writing. At the end of the story the Hemingway introduces the inner world
of Harry to the readers. The author says that There is gangrene started his right leg and had no pain or
with the heavy pains the horror feeling gad gone. Now he felt great tiredness & anger and that was the
end.

The term gangrene is the metaphor as the crippling and bad influences on his writing and

creative skills. Harry suffers a strong mental torture and he was not able to write anything.
We also can see that the main character Harry scratched himself instead of adopting the
metaphorical iodine from the current easy going life to the places of real inspiration. Another metaphoric
term was he simply adopted a weak carbolic-solution which is metaphorically similar to the trip to
Africa. The main character Mr. Harry, adopted many similes and metaphors when he speaks to Helen.
The best example is Love as a dunghill, Im the cock that gets on to crow. And My armour was
your money.
