Acoustics
This course gives an introduction to acoustics for designers of facades and faade components.
Basic concepts of acoustics are covered including noise, sound measurement, sound transmission and
insulation.
The acoustic, performance of basic faade materials and components is covered along with methods of
assessment and testing.
Finally the course covers the acoustic performance of whole facades including sound transmission through the
wall and flanking transmission. Examples of good practice are given.
The course is intended for those who specify or design building envelopes, curtain walling and facade
components.

The moisture performance of a built-up wall is dependant upon the cavities within the wall, the thermal insulation
and its position relative to any cavities in the wall, and any vapour control layers that may be present.
This course will look at all of these aspects of performance as well as thermal bridging and condensation risk.
On completion of this course delegates will be able to assess the heat transfer and condensation performance of
built-up walls.
Participants: Envelope designers, consultants, design managers
Pre-requisite: None
Tutors: David Metcalfe, Stephen Ledbetter
Duration: One day

snow and building occupants. The use of these loads in the structural analysis of facades is covered in course
S101. It covers the basic principles that affect the magnitude of loads, how they are calculated and combinations of
load that should be considered in the design of facades.
Eurocodes 0 and 1 for loading on structures (BS EN 1991-0 and BS EN 1991-1) replaced BS 6399 in March 2010.
The course will refer to the assessment of load in accordance with the Eurocodes and highlight differences from
BS 6399.
Successful completion of this course will enable the delegate to assess the loading on cladding as required for CE
Marking.
Participants: Curtain wall designers, structural engineers
Pre-requisite: None
Tutors: Alan Keiller, Stephen Ledbetter
Duration: One day
Venue: Bath
Since July 2013 the Construction Products Regulation has required curtain walling to be CE marked in accordance
with the
curtain walling product Standard, BS EN 13830.
This course covers the requirements for CE marking including: Testing; Design; Quality systems; Legal
requirements.
A revised version of BS EN 18380 is due for publication this year which goes beyond the current Standard.
This course will cover each aspect of performance covered by BS EN 13830 showing how compliance with the
Standard and CE marking is achieved.
Time will be available for discussion and on completion of this course delegates will understand how to declare
perrformance as required for CE Marking. .

Managing the cladding package
This course covers both curtain walls and rainscreen walls. Those dealing exclusively with rainscreen may however
find the built-up walls courses more appropriate. There is a considerable amount of common material between this
course and 'Curtain wall design and construction'. Candidates should not book for both courses.
This course covers all aspects of the management of cladding packages including:
Facade constructions
Components
Technical detailing
Installation, inspection
The course considers why things are designed and selected, what has to be built and the quality procedures to be
applied.
The course will be of benefit to all building professionals responsible for supervising cladding packages on site and is
suitable for those working for main contractors, specialist sub-contractors, site architects and engineers.
The course gives underpinning knowledge to enable confident management of envelope contracts.
