Topic/Concept/Skill:
Students will be introduced to the method of carrying or regrouping with one-digit
addition.
Related Standard:
2.CA.1: Add and subtract fluently within 100.
Background:
Students have background knowledge of addition with two-digit to one-digit numbers,
however regrouping is a new concept.
Main Objective of Instruction:
After instruction and practice, students will be able to understand the method of
regrouping with two-digit to one-digit addition by demonstrating their knowledge with a
worksheet in the time allotted.
Teacher Materials/Resources:
Envision Math series worksheet and workbook, chalkboard, projector, base 10 pieces,
Envision Math supplemental video corresponding to the lesson
Student Materials:
Envision Math series worksheet and student workbook, pencil, mini whiteboard, expo
marker, cubes
Anticipatory Set (Introductory Approach):
On the board there will be a word problem for the students to solve on their whiteboards
(this is their routine). I will say, Who enjoyed trick or treating? Did you get a lot of
candy? I want you to solve this math problem about Halloween candy! Students will
complete the word problem. When everyone is finished I will say, Lets review our math
problem. On the board I have 25 pieces of candy. Lets show that with cubes. I also have
7 more pieces of candy. Lets also show that with cubes. We all know that 25+7= what?
32! I want us to be able to show that by using something different called regrouping or
carrying. Lets use our cubes. Here we have 25 cubes representing our 25 pieces of candy.

Over here we have 7 cubes representing our 7 more pieces of candy. Im going to write to
the side 25+7. Well come back to that. What I want you to look at now is the group of
ones. How many ones do we have altogether? 12! But wait, 12 is actually part of a ten.
So what are we going to do? We are going to group 10 in this ones column. We are going
to regroup, or carry, this new tens to the tens place. Thats where it goes now because it is
a ten. Now we have 2 leftover. If we look at our problem, we know that 5+7=12. But
theres not room in the ones place to write 12. So we are going to leave the 2 in the ones
place and regroup the tens to the tens column. Now, were done with the ones column.
Lets move over to the tens. How many tens do we have now? 3! So our final answer is
32, because we have 3 tens and 2 ones. Lets do another example. I want you to find 56+5
using the same steps I did. After students solve the next example, we will review as a
class.
Instructional Procedures (Whole Group):
Students will watch an enrichment video corresponding to this lesson. Throughout the
video I will pause and clarify. After the video, students will receive their worksheet. The
first page we do together. We are determining if regrouping is needed. The next 3 pages
the students complete individually. I have cubes available for students who need it. We
will review the worksheet together as a class.
Provisions for Individual and/or Group Differences:
For students who are struggling, they will use the cubes. For students who understand the
material quickly, they will write their own problem that is a number with tens and a
number with ones that as a class we have to use regrouping skills to solve.
Closure:
I will say to the students, Today we learned how to regroup or carry tens. Can you tell
me how you know when to regroup? This is a building block for when we add two-digit
numbers later in the year to close this lesson.
Evaluation of Learning:
I will be evaluating the students throughout the lesson. I will be walking around the
classroom while they complete their worksheet and answer any questions.
Independent Practice:
For homework, students will complete the pages in their workbook.
