Lesson Plan:
Introduction:
The teacher will start off the lesson with taking a survey. The teacher will ask students to
stand by their chair. The teacher will say: I am new to this classroom and do not know how you
all get home after school. The way we are going to see how we all get home is that I will ask you
a question and according to the answer, you will either go to the right of the room or will go to
the left of the room. If take the bus go to the right of the room (wait for students to walk). If
you walk home go to the left side of the room (wait for students to walk). If you stay at PASAR
come to the front of the classroom (wait for students to walk) and if you ride in a car go to the
back of the room (wait for students to walk). Ask students how can they can transfer our
findings in a graph. What graph could we use? Have students pick. After the students have
picked have a student count how many are in their group and the teacher will write or draw the
number of students in each group. After have students go back to their desk.
Process:

Information Giving:
Use the anchor charts that the teacher has previously done with the students to review the
different ways to collect data. Ask students What are the different ways that we can collect
data? Make the list on the board. The students should be familiar with tally marks or T-charts
for surveys,, pictographs and bar-type graphs. The teacher should point to each way to collect
data as students verbally explain each type of graph. The students will be able to use the
Spanish language if necessary.
Modeling:
The teacher will go over one way to collect data that will be in one of their centers during math
workshop. The teacher will model Wild About Graphing. The teacher will explain to students
that they will do the following:
1. Choose one station card.
2. Take one sheet of graph paper.
3. Use the information on the card to make a bar graph and fill out the All about my
Wild Graph
4. Remember to use: labels, numbers, and a title.
The teacher will have students repeat the instructions to clear any confusion. The All about my
Wild Graph will be in Spanish.
Check for Understanding:
The teacher will give choose one station card and put it on the ELMO for students to be able to
view the station card. The teacher will ask students to talk and share wit their partner about
what they know after the teacher has read the station card. The teacher will walk around and
listen to students discussion about their observations. The teacher will bring back the class and
ask students what they discussed with their partner.

Guided Practice:
The teacher will have the station card and the bar graph on the ELMO. The teacher will pick a
student to explain how they will label the, have another student explain what numbers to write
and write what title to use for the bar graph. The teacher will give a student the opportunity to
fill in the bar graph according to the information on the card. The teacher can help if needed.
After the bar graph has been filled, guide students to filling out the All about my Wild Graph.
The teacher will read out the question in Spanish and then will pick a student to answer the
question in a complete sentence. The teacher will write the answer on the ELMO in complete
sentences.
Independent Practice:
The teacher will group students into groups of 5.
Group #1: Students will work on Wild About Graphing
Group #2: Students will work on M&M Graphing with the teacher at the teacher table. The
teacher will have M&Ms in a bag. The students will have to use a tally chart, bar graph and

pictograph to collect their data. The teacher will be making sure that students do not eat the
M&Ms. (I spoke to Mrs. Elizondo about doing this activity with the students)
Group #3: Students will go on the computers.
Group #4: Students will complete Favorite Zoo Animal. The student will be given a spinner. The
student will spin the spinner 12 times, record their data in the tally chart, then use the bar
graph to make a graph.

Closure/Culminating Activity:
The teacher will bring back the class and will pick one student from each group to discuss their
graph from either the Favorite Family Zoo, the M&M graphing or Wild About Graphing . The
teacher will ask students high order thinking questions and students will have to respond in
complete sentences.
Enrichment/Extension:
Have students come up with a question for their survey then have them create and record their
data using either a tally chart or bar graph. The student will be evaluated according to their
data and information that was taken.
Accommodations:
1. Provide instruction in the students native language.
2. Provide a sample of a tally, bar-graph and pictograph for student to visulize data
that has been collected.
3.
Assessment/Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated by the way they collected and organized their data and if they used
their data to create an appropriate graph. The teacher will be monitoring at their centers and
will be observing the students at the teacher table seeing if students are graphing and labeling
the correct information. The teacher will also evaluate how students verbally explain their data
and graph to the classroom.
