Katel, Peter. "Racial Conflict." CQ Researcher 8 Jan. 2016: 25-48. Web. 23 Nov. 2016.
This article explains the different discrimination type actions that African Americans
face. The gun violence against the African American community and how African
Americans are shot more frequently than a white skin person. They talk about the
economic gap between minorities and whites. They also have a timeline about relevant
African American events throughout this nation's history. They conclude with talking
about the black lives matter movement. I found this article using the cq researcher that I
accessed through the Oviatt Library. The information is sourced from various studies,
reports, and journal articles. This can potentially be useful because I can use the research
they did on the economic gap in my essay that talks about the economic hardships
African Americans face. I want to use the statistics to show that Harlam as a major
African American neighborhood deals with this economical gap and the writers clearly
represent that in the series.
Obama, Barack. "Racism Against Young African American Men Needs to Be Addressed." Racial
Profiling. Ed. Nol Merino. Farmington Hills, MI: Greenhaven Press, 2015. Current
Controversies. Rpt. from "Remarks by the President on Trayvon Martin." 2013.
Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 27 Nov. 2016.
This source talks about how the general public categorize African Americans as
criminals, the way African Americans like Trayvon Martin, statistically, have a higher
percentage of being shot by a peer, and the need for new training for the people in law
enforcement. I found this source using opposing viewpoints in the oviatt library database.

I then chose social issues then viewpoints. This article uses a number of books, internet
articles, and articles found using the cq researcher database. This article will be useful
because this article talks about African American crime and talks about law enforcement.
Both of which are relevant for my topic as a lot of the characters in Luke Cage are
African American criminals and policeman. I can use the article when comparing the two
to its real-life counterpart.
Scheller, Alissa. In the Rare Event a Hollywood Movie Features Black Leads, Something
Remarkable Happens. The Huffington Post. Huffington Post, 6 April 2016. Web. 17
November 2016.
This article explains how the thought of filmmakers only wanting white actors because
they think having a cast of African Americans wont fill the seats is a mistake. They claim
using a research study that there were no negative effects in having a African American
cast. When having two or more African American actors the film earned more at the box
office than the average film with no black actors. I found this source using google when
trying to find statistics on actors in Hollywood and the movie television. This source uses
a study done by researchers from University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business
School and uses their numbers to back up the claims that are made. When writing my
essay I can use this article when I talk about the actors for the show. Since the show is
majority African American I can use it to claim how the show is trying to combat this
racial inequality in television and the cinema.
Santhanam, Laura. Out of 30,000 Hollywood film characters, heres how many werent white.
PBS Newshour. PBS, 22 Sept. 2015. Web. 20 Nov. 2016.

This article uses analyzes the racial differences in films ranging from 2007 to 2014. The
article that for nearly a decade the diversity in films haven't changed and that actors for
these films are majority white. I found this article when I used google to try to find
statistics for the racial differences in films. This article uses a research article from
researchers from USC who studied gender, race, and LGBT status from 700 films
between 2007 to 2014. This is relevant as my previous source because I can use it as
another proof on how unequal the movie and television series are between minorities and
whites. I can examine how while there maybe other superhero shows Luke Cage is
different in that it breaks the mold by having a majority of African American actors.
Katel, Peter. "Police Tactics." CQ Researcher 12 Dec. 2014: 1033-60. Web. 27 Nov. 2016.
This source focuses on law enforcement and the equipment that they use. Recently during
protests the police have been using various military-type equipment and supplies. The
article explains how the government gives local law enforcement worth of equipment and
while the majority are office-type equipment the rest are military grade vehicles and
weapons. I found this source using the cq database through the Oviatt library database. I
can use this article when comparing the police of the show to that of real-life. The article
explains how the law enforcement are having higher military grade weapons in various
circumstances and this reflects in the television series because the local law enforcement
are sold higher class bullets in order to stop Luke Cage.

"Race and Ethnicity." CQ Researcher 15 June 2013. Web. 27 Nov. 2016.

This article focuses on racism in the United States. According to the article ethnic
minorities mainly African Americans are behind whites in financial matters and racial
matters of the supreme court. Some people even in the African American community

believed that racial relations between white and blacks would improve through Obamas
presidency but the article states that not only is there still a racial stereotype, whites are
much more likely than blacks to think there isn't a stereotype. I found this using the cq
researcher in the Oviatt Library database when searching about racial tensions in the
african american community. The writer uses various research and news articles when
writing on this topic and backs up all the data used. I can use this article in my paragraph
about racial tensions in the African American community with whites. I want to use its
findings and research when comparing the movie to real-life and how the show reflects
the arguments brought on by the article.
