TRANSCRIPT: (405 words) Recording- 2m 12s
As a teacher in the digital age, I will need a range of skills and
dispositions, in order to positively impact student learning and
development. The 21st century, continues to require teachers with sound
pedagogy, who are lifelong learners, ethical and compassionate. However,
as stated by the Digital Education Advisory Group [DEAG], (2012) there
are new abilities, unique to the digital age that all teachers need to
possess and be able to teach their students.
As indicated in my mind map, (Hasan-Warner, T. 2016) digital age
characteristics, such as: Technology, Globalization and Innovation, have
produced rapid changes to the world we live in. With such prompt access
to information, critical thinking skills are vital, as they support learners to
develop digital fluency and succeed in our fast paced world. As a teacher,
I can utilise digital fluency skills to access technology in creative ways and
be inclusive of diverse learners needs.
According to the Global Digital Citizen Foundation (2014), media,
information, solution, collaboration and creativity fluencies, will allow me
to interpret and analyse information, problem solve and work
independently, creatively and cooperatively, in virtual and real-world
situations, (Global Digital Citizen Foundation, 2014). To impart these skills
onto my students, I will need to employ and teach the 4Cs of the digital
age.
According to Ewing, R., Lowrie, T. & Higgs, J. (2010) critical thinking,
creativity, collaboration and communication are the 4Cs vital to learners
in the 21st century. For me critical thinking is of particular importance,
because it supports progressive thinking and transcends subject matter,
(Critical Thinking Organisation, n.d.). The Critical Thinking Organisation,
(n.d.) argues that critical thinkers are better communicators, process
Page 10 of 24

information more effectively and use artistic expertise powerfully, to

become innovators. As a result, teachers who are critical thinkers, are
often open-minded, culturally competent and engage a digital mindset,
(Chattopadhyay, S, 2016), to use technology as a tool for exploration,
collaboration and inclusion.
Inclusion of all learners is progressively important in the digital age, due to
increasingly diverse populations in schools. Clarke. M. (2014), emphasises
the importance of being culturally competent and flexible. I believe such
dispositions, along with digital fluency skills and the 4Cs, will support me
to monitor and improve my teaching practices. I will therefore be able to
align student learning needs with 21st century knowledge and align
technologies with content and pedagogy, (American Association of
Colleges of Teacher Education and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills
[AACTA] 2010, September).

Part 3
Blog Post (438 words)
Blog URL: http://creativeteachinglearning.weebly.com
Blog entry URL:
http://creativeteachinglearning.weebly.com/blog/the-challengesof-teaching-in-the-digital-age

Teachers in the digital age face many challenges, as our increasingly

complex world is replicated in classrooms. Consequently, teachers face
dealing with issues such as cyber-safety, mental health matters, changing
family structures and a constantly changing knowledge base, (Bates, A.W.)
As a new teacher, I am significantly concerned about being able to
accommodate the needs of increasingly diverse students and the effects
of information overload, due to a digitally saturated world, (The
Association of Independent Schools of New South Wales Limited [AIS],
2015, p.1).
Increasing diversity in classrooms makes teaching a complicated
profession that requires achievement and academic progress for all
Page 16 of 24

EDU80010 DIGITAL AGE A1: ONLINE TASK. TANJA HASAN-WARNER. TP3 2016

students, including those with varied needs. Consequently, educators

need to adapt to student diversity, (Yoon, J-S., n.d.). I believe I can tackle
such challenges by understanding students learning styles, their diverse
backgrounds and cultural identities, as well as recognizing their abilities
and any learning difficulties. It is important I use and promote critical and
creative thinking, cultural competence and ethical practices to address
diverse learners and be inclusive of their needs.

Figure 4 Using universal design to differentiate instruction, Tremonte, A. (2015)

Through a student-centred, universal design learning approach, (Hobgood,

B. & Ormsby, L. n.d.), I can support achievement and meaningful learning
for all students. Through integrated units, multi-sensory teaching,
multiple intelligence's, ICT and authentic assessments that individualizes
criteria for student success, (Rose, D.H., Meyer, A., Strangman, N., &
Rappol, G. 2002), I will recognize that all students, have distinctive and

valid abilities and supports a culture of inclusion and success for all
learners.

Figure 5 Infographics help. Feldman, B. (2014)

Todays digital devices allow us to readily access huge amounts of

information, 24/7. As a result, many students are in a permanent state
of distraction, which can impact negatively on their attention and learning,
(AIS, 2015). Combine that with the Niagara falls of information,
(Withrow, F.B. 2011) that is available all the time and information overload
is bound to occur.
Vast amounts of information can only useful, if organized into a digestible
form, (Briggs, S. 2014, April). This means, as an educator, I need to access
content efficiently and effectively, (Butler-Kisber, L. 2013) so I can teach
students do the same and reduce the likelihood of cognitive overload.
Briggs, (2014) suggests introducing students to management strategies
that limit distractions, whilst Mayer, R.E. & Moreno, R. (2003), promote
Page 18 of 24

EDU80010 DIGITAL AGE A1: ONLINE TASK. TANJA HASAN-WARNER. TP3 2016

segmenting learning into manageable parts and using a variety of

multimodal learning experiences and thinking tools. Likewise, AIS, (2015)
propose that teaching meta-cognition, mindfulness and taking breaks from
technology as equally helpful in the classroom. I believe all of these are
valid and would support students to develop critical thinking skills and
information fluency, so as to avoid information overload and therefore
improve teaching and learning experiences.
