EXERCISE 1
1. HOW DO THE SPECIFIC HEAT OF THE METALS COMPARE WITH
THE SPECIFIC HEAT OF WATER?
The specific heat of water is 1 calorie/gram C = 4.186 joule/gram C which is higher
than any other common substance. As a result, water plays a very important role in
temperature regulation. The specific heat per gram for water is much higher than that for
a metal
So, the conclusion could be made that the specific heat of metal is lower than the
specific heat of water. It requires less heat per unit mass to create a greater change in
temperature for metal than it does for water. This is general of course, since there are
different types of metal.
2. IN RAINY SEASON, WHY DOES THE STEEL HANDLE OF THE WOOD CABINET
IS COLDER THAN THE CABINET?
The feel of cold & hot is produced due to :(1) Temperature difference
(2) Rate of heat transfer
=>As in rainy season the temperature difference is more between hand and object, also the steel
is a good conductor whereas wood is a poor conductor thus the rate of heat transfer is more in
steel.
the cabinet is filled with air which is insulator of heat but steel is a metal and a good
conductor of heat
so when touching the handle it takes heat from your hand and quickly distribute it to the
neighbouring
atoms and to entire handle so the process is to quick and we feel cool but air cannot do it quick
as like it so we dont feel much cold
EXERCISE 2
1. WHAT ADVANTAGE MIGHT THE COMMERCIALLY PACKAGED COOLANT
MATERIAL
it would be at room temperature until activated, ie. ice would melt in a few hours so if you have a
long jorney ou could only use it when you need it. it would involve an endothermic reaction
