MAJOR PROJECT SYNOPSIS

TOPIC:DESIGN OF
RECONFIGURABLE
SYSTEM ON CHIP FOR
MULTITUDE SENSOR
INTERFACE

OBJECTIVE:
Our objective is to design a multitude sensor interface. Various different types of sensors like conditioned
sensor, temperature sensor, gas sensor, resistive sensor etc will be connected with user through a single
interfacing module and this will be implemented by making a reconfigurable system on chip. The interface
we will design will not only be capable of interfacing different sensor topologies through a reconfigurable
multi standard output interface[4] but also be providing increased flexibility with its processing, storage, and
networking capabilities.

MOTIVATION:
The need of real time, reliable distributed monitoring system is becoming nowadays more obvious in
several applications in the field of environmental, agro-food, medical, industrial fields. The advancement in
sensor network and sensor related technologies are the important needs in those fields.
Numerous sensors are available in the market with different interfaces like RS232, SPI, frequency based
etc and thus making a network of different types of sensors complex for being implemented.
The concept of intelligent sensor has been introduced some days past. An intelligent or smart sensor is
capable of signal conditioning, self calibration, self identification, diagnostic, networking etc [2] and so, by
converting a sensor into a smart sensor [1] it is possible to implement the multitude sensor interface that is
applicable in various fields of applications.
The IEEE 1451 standard proposes functionalities, data structure and communication protocols regarding
data exchange between transducer and network [3] but standardization of the sensor interfaces is still a open
issue.

STRATEGY:
We will first go through the literature survey. Then we will try to learn about various sensor and sensor
topologies like different front-ends, signal conditioning etc. The designing of reconfigurable hardware and
firmware will be done then. Next, we will define a boundary for the different types of hardware we will
introduce in the system. At last we will develop a prototype for the proposed system on chip for multitude
sensor interface.

EXPECTED OUTCOME:
Expected outcomes would be (a) complete design of a flexible and reconfigurable system on chip that
will provide a single interface for different types of sensors and (b) we will come up with a prototype based
on our design of system on chip interfacing module.
