On November 17, 2016 thousands of people dressed in white assembled and
occupied the streets in protest of the impending legalization of same-sex marriage
in Taipei, Taiwan. The subject is still highly debated in this country known to be
relatively accepting of gays, lesbians and those of other sexual orientations but with
the on-going legislative measures and favorable political climate on the issue led by
President Tsai Ing-wen who was vocal in her approving sentiment on the issue,
Taiwan is set to the first in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in conservative Asia. 1
Around the globe, many governments have already welcomed the unconventional
union into their law with European countries leading the way. Denmark was the first
country to introduce civil partnerships for same-sex couples, in 1989 which was
followed by Norway, Sweden and Iceland while South Africa became the first African
country to legalize the same despite homosexuality remaining taboo in large parts
of the continent. 2 On the other hand, the world celebrated when same sex marriage
was legalized in liberal United States in 2015, ten years after Canada did the same.

slavery was common custom in the United States which helped build the economic
foundations of the new nation. Slave trade started as early as the 17th century with
the abolition movement rising during the 1830s to the 1860s. Black slavery was
officially abolished in 1865.4
