Mr. Davalos

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
Dear Parents and Guardians, Hello and welcome. My name is Fernando Davalos
and I will be your child's math teacher or Social Studies teacher this new school year. As
we embark ion this year, I want to introduce myself and our department as a partner in
your childs math education. At the end of this letter, you will find information on the
math classroom policy, required materials, textbook policy, grading policy, homework
policy, and information on progress reports, teacher e-mails, and the state standards for
the grade level of your child. Please read and review the school rules, policies, and
information that can be found in the student code of conduct. To remain aware of the
expectations of your student, please check their planner regularly. Also, students grades
can be found on eschoolplus at any time throughout the school year. Make sure to contact
your childs respective counselor for Home-access username and password. Progress
reports will be sent home periodically or I will phone/e-mail parents/guardians at times.
Please make sure you review them with your child, sign\them, and make sure they are
returned to me. My goal is to monitor the maturation process of your child over the
course of the school year. Please feel free to e-mail me or write me a note whenever you
feel like expressing your concerns about the progress of your child. I am very excited to
be given the opportunity to work with your child this year. If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact me by phone or by email. I look forward to seeing you at Open
House on Thursday September 17, 2015 @6:30pm.

Raising your hand Raising your hand indicates that you would like my attention. Please
hold all questions until ALL instructions have been given out. Once you are working
independently or within groups, please feel free to raise your hand at any time as long as
questions and/or comments are related directly to the task at hand. Otherwise, please hold

your thoughts and speak to me after class, at the end of the day, or the very next morning.
Sharpening your pencil If your pencil point should break, you should sharpen your pencil
with the least amount of disruption possible. Please wait to sharpen your pencil until I
have completed teaching my lesson and/or talking to the class as a whole. It would be
beneficial to have a pencil sharpener of your own that you can access at any time.
Restroom Use
I ask that you wait until all instructions have been given before leaving the room to use
the bathroom. There are no bathroom privileges the first 10 minutes of class or the last 10
minutes of class. When leaving the room to use the bathroom, please raise your hand to
ask permission, bring your bathroom sheet to me to have it signed. Take the required
pass. Only 1 person should leave the classroom at a time, so if someone else is out of the
classroom, please wait until they have returned to ask for permission. Restroom
privileges are restricted to 5 times a marking period for each class.
Group Work
During some lessons there will be opportunities to work in pairs/group. Sometimes I will
allow students to select their partners, while most of the time I will be assigning students
to pairs/groups. I ask that everyone respect one another when working together. Please do
not express disappointment or disapproval of other students within the class. In addition,
all students are expected to contribute to the activity with no one person taking charge of
the entire group, and no students relying on other students to do all the work.
Grade Scale
A 90 100 %
B 80 89 %
C 70 79%
D 60 69 %
F 59 % or below
This is the grading scale set forth by the Brandywine School District, and will be used for
math class. Grading Policy Each marking period there will be formal tests, quizzes
(announced and unannounced), warm-up activities, class work, and homework
assignments. There will also be other types of informal assessments to periodically check
for understanding. District wide assessments will also be administered throughout
the year.
Your students math grade will be broken down as follows: Tests/Quizzes/Assessments
70% of the grade, class work 20%, homework 10%. E- School Plus, the state
computerized grading system will average the following categories: Class Work,
Homework, and Tests to obtain a grade point average. If you do not know how to access
E-School Plus, please call the main office and they can provide you with your students
access information.
Homework

Completing math homework is essential to success in math. Expect homework in math

every day. Homework is not a punishment, but a valuable tool to help your student
succeed in math. Homework will make up 10% of your students math grade. All
assignments should be labeled with the students first and last name, date, period, and
assignment title. Parents, your child will always receive written and oral directions for all
class work, homework, and tests. Time will be given in class to write down their daily
assignments in their planner.
Preparedness
Students are expected to come to class prepared every day with their homework,
workbook, spiral notebook, and several sharpened pencils. Bringing the above list of
materials, completing all assignments, and a willingness to learn and participation is
crucial for success. Textbook The math curriculum this year is an on line curriculum. The
students will receive a workbook which they will need to keep track of throughout the
year.
Absences
Excessive absences should be avoided. In the event of an absence, the student is required
to make up class and homework assignments. Any student that is absent should check
with me immediately upon their return to school. Please see the Student Code of Conduct
for the complete policy on completing work after an absence.
Extra Help
If any student feels he/she needs extra help, has any questions, or needs to stay after
school to make up work from an absence, they are encouraged to see me and set up a
time.
