"ASPCA Launches National Relocation Program for Shelter Animals." PRWeb. ASPCA, 12 May
2011. Web. 26 Oct. 2016.
-The ASPCA website contains lots of useful information regarding the abuse of animals and
information on how to stop animal abuse and the issues animals face due to
overpopulation and neglect. The site also includes ways for people to get involved and
the reasons to adopt pets from shelters and not to buy from dog stores or breeders. For my
paper on the dark side of dog breeding and the issues of buying from breeders and pet
stores, the ASPCA website provided me with a lot of useful information on advocating
for adopting from animal shelters. The website contained a large section on why people
need to only adopt from shelters which I used as my block quote in my essay. The
ASPCA is a credible source since the ASPCA is one of the most reputable and established
animal rights organizations in the country. The strength of this website as a source is that
the ASPCA verifies its statistics and gives sources and also has a good reputation as being
credible and crucial in the fight against animal cruelty.

Burger, Kailey A. Solving the Problem of Puppy Mills: Why the Animal Welfare Movement's
Bark is Stronger than its Bite." Wash.UJL & Pol'y 43 (2013): 259.
-This source comes from a Law Journal and discusses the abuse and problems associated with
puppy mills and mass breeding of dogs. The journal discusses the behavioral issues seen in
dogs from puppy mills and additionally characterizes puppy mills as places which prioritize
profits over the well-being of the dogs. Since my essay is on the issues and damaging effects
of mass dog breeding and puppy mills this source was extremely useful for my essay in
providing credible information about dog breeding issues. Since the source comes from an
official law journal, which has been peer reviewed, the information given is reliable. This
source is unique since it is a law journal and reading the information was different than
others since the information directly related to a case but the information was very useful
and credible since it was used in court.
Cohen, Lloyd D., and Debra Hart-Cohen. "Show Dogs and Breeding." GPSolo 26.5 (2009): 2630.
This source comes from an academic journal about animal law which looked at reasons animal
breeding exists such as for purebred dogs and show dogs but also included information on
puppy mills and laws that have been created since 1966 and their level of effective or
ineffectiveness. The article took a negative view of puppy mills and gave me vital
information on their negative impact on the welfare of the dogs who experience puppy mills
and that most dogs sold in stores come from puppy mills. The source came from an
academic journal which means the article has been peer-reviewed and is scholarly and in
turn is a reliable source to cite from. This source was unique in that the academic journal
was not difficult to read and included some visuals and large subheadings and captions

which made reading and comprehending the information less challenging and more
accessible to a wider audience.
Feldmann, Bruce Max. "The Problem of Urban Dogs." Science 185.4155 (1974): 903-.
-This source details the many issues associated with the overpopulation of dogs in the United
States, especially the urban dog population specifically. Feldmann writes about how the
government has to spend millions every year to deal with the problems stemming from mass
dog breeding and that the main culprits who profit the most from mass dog breeding do not
have to take care of these many homeless dogs. This source relates to my topic because it
provides statistics and credible information which supports my argument that mass dog
breeding leads to the overpopulation of dogs and that the government and tax payers have to
pay for all these homeless dogs. This source is credible because the source is from a science
journal and has been peer-reviewed by other experts. A strength of Feldmanns article is that
he looks at the negative effects of the overpopulation of dogs over a large time span from
the 1970s up to more recently.
"Puppy Mills: The Humane Society of the United States." RSS. Humane Society, n.d. Web. 26
Oct. 2016.
-The Humane Society of the United States website provides relevant and useful information to
the public about many issues facing animals across the United States. The website
contains information about the problems of dog breeding, what people can do to help
animal rights causes and the benefits of animal shelters and much more. This sources
relates to my paper because my paper is on the problems and damaging effects on dogs
from dog breeding and puppy mills. The Humane Society is a very credible source
because they are a famous and reputable animal rights organization. The Humane Society

gave my paper lots of recent information and statistics on the overpopulation of dogs in
the United States. A strength of this source is that since it is a major website navigating
the site is easy and finding the information one needs is easy to do and the visuals on the
site incite pathos in whoever goes on the website.
Palma, Costanza De, et al. "Evaluating the Temperament in Shelter Dogs." Behaviour 142.9
(2005): 1307-28.
-This source describes the conditions in puppy mills and how they lead to the physical and
emotional abuse and cruelty to all the dogs who come from puppy mills and how shelters
are forced to take in many more dogs than they should. This source gave me useful
information which strengthened my argument on the awful situations dogs are exposed to in
puppy mills and through mass breeding. This article is from an academic journal which
means the article has been peer-reviewed by other experts which validates the information
given.
Persky, Anna Stolley, and David Sutton. "Their Day in Court." ABA Journal 96.9 (2010): 54-9.
-This journal has information on why animal law is growing because of the abuse animals face
and includes information on how animal shelters have a more detailed screening process for
buying pets such as background checks which allows me to make the point that animal
shelters are a much better option to buy pets because by buying from shelters supports a
system that prevents potentially harmful people from buying dogs. This source is credible
because it comes from a law journal which has been peer-reviewed by multiple lawyers
which means the published information is valid. A strength of this source is that it provides
the readers with valid information about why buying from local shelters is more beneficial
to the buyers and the welfare of the dogs.

Silberman, Morton S. "Animal Welfare, Animal Rights: The Past, the Present, and the 21st
Century." The Journal of Zoo Animal Medicine 19.4 (1988): 161-7.
-This journal writes about the history and evolution of animal rights and laws and the
developments in public perception on animal rights that led to new laws forming. The
journal specifically includes information on how during the 1960s stories of the atrocities
occurring in puppy mills were making the public more aware of the mistreatment especially
in 1965 when a magazine displayed grotesque images of a puppy mill which in turn led to
the 1966 Animal Welfare Act. This source is credible because it comes from an academic
journal which means it has been peer-reviewed by experts. A strength of this source is that it
looks at what the government has done thus far throughout recent history to combat animal
cruelty and the subsequent effects.
Welch, K. M. "Animal Cruelty Cases." GPSolo 26.5 (2009): 64-7.
- This citation comes from a book which discusses animal cruelty cases and in the book the
author brings up multiple reasons that many puppy mills violate the law. She writes how
many puppy mills violate neglect statutes such as providing adequate food and water and
that often the food may be moldy and unfit for consumption. This source provides my
research paper with evidence of illegal practices taking place in puppy mills. This source is
credible because it has been published in an academic journal and in turn has been peerreviewed by many experts thus the information provided should be accurate.
