Boris Shklyar is a trauma liaison who works at Conway Medical Centers Department of

Emergency Medicine. Boris received his medical degree from the University of New England
College of Osteopathic Medicine. Boris has seventeen years of experience and began working in
Conway eight years ago, there he works with ten other physicians. The trauma liaison was
invited to Michael Chapmans Emergency Medical Services II class to give the students a brief
presentation and hindsight into the life of a trauma liaison. Shklyar spoke of such topics such as
different levels of severity with the patients he has worked with and what he believes Emergency
Medical Services true purpose when dealing with trauma care. Boris asked the students not take
notes and engage with him as if just having a regular conversation. Then, Shklyar opened a
powerpoint presentation where in this he showed some famous examples of how severe trauma
patients may be injured. One example that comes to mind is the patient with mangled lower torso
who miraculously survived the injuries. When it comes to patients like these, Boris revealed what
he believed the purpose of EMS actually was, which he described as to haul ass to the best
suiting trauma center. To clarify, trauma centers are listed as levels one through five, one being
the best suited and five being the lowest. Level five trauma centers are typically uncommon
because of how little they provide. In the case of Conways Medical Centers trauma level
ranking, they rank as a level 3. Boris mentioned in his presentation what separates these levels
apart from each other such as number of patients admitted, what specialties are offered at the
trauma center, and the equipment available at each center. Overall, I enjoyed Boriss presentation
and look forward to seeing him at the Conway Medical Center field trip, if it happens of course.
