Structure
Whatdataidentifiesseparatequantsinastoragebin?
Whenastoragebinisoccupied,thesystemmaintainsdataaboutthematerialsthatarestoredatthatlocation
inthequantrecord.Thisdataincludes:
Quantidentification
Plant
Materialnumber
Batchnumber
Stockcategory
Specialstockindicatorandnumber

Ifasinglestoragebincontains100piecesofmaterialABCasfollows:

Sinceitispossibletomanagestocksfromdifferentplantswithinonewarehousecomplexnumber,theplant
mustalsoexistasastockseparationcharacteristicinthequant.
Activestorageunitmanagementinastoragetypecanalsoinfluencethenumberofquantsinastoragebin.(To
seehowquantsarehandledinSUmanagedstoragetypes,seeWarehouseManagementattheStorageUnit
Level).
InCustomizing,foreachstoragetypeyoucandefinewhetheronlyonequantorseveralquantscanbestoredin
astoragebin.Foreachstoragetype,youcanallowmixedorhomogeneousstorage(seeStoringMaterialsin
theWarehouse).Youcanalsopermittheadditiontoexistingstockatthislevel.Thismeansthatgoodswiththe
samematerialnumberandthesameadditionalquantcriteriacanbecombinedduringputawaysandstock
transfers.

Caution
Whenaddingmaterialstoexistingstock,quantcharacteristicsarecombined.Thismeansthatthequant
informationinthestockthatisaddedtoexistingstockislostandtakesonthequantcharacteristicsofthestock
thatisalreadystoredinthebin.Thisincludes,forexample,thegoodsreceiptdate.BecautiouswhereFIFO
stockisconcerned.Thisquantinformationdoesnotgoawayuntilthestoragebinhasbeencompletelyemptied.

Howisaquantcreated?
WhenyoustoregoodsinanemptystoragebininWM,thesystemcreatesthequantinthebin.Thismeansthat
thesystemissuesaquantnumberand,whenthequantityofmaterialispicked,thequantnumberis
automaticallydeletedagain.

ThisnumberhasnosignificantmeaningforyourcompanyandisusedformanagementpurposesinWM.
Integration
WhyistheuseofthequantmeaningfulinWM?
SincethesystemautomaticallyassignsaquantnumbertoeachseparatequantinWM,thesystemcan
optimizematerialflowandmanagestockinthewarehousemoreefficiently.
Shelflifeexpirationdate(SLED)
TheSLEDfieldonlyexistsinthequantwhenshelflifemanagementisactiveinMaterialsManagement(MM).
Thishappenswhenthematerialmasterismaintainedaccordingly.
DuringastockplacementinMMyoucanentereithertheproductiondateortheshelflifeexpirationdate.This
dependsuponwhetherthefield
"RemainingShelfLife"
hasbeenmaintainedinthematerialmasterrecord.Forexample,if10dayshavebeenenteredintothisfield,
thesystemassumesthatwhengoodsarereceived,theproductiondatewasenteredandcalculatestheshelf
lifeautomatically.Ifyouleavethisfieldemptyinthematerialmaster,thesystemmakesitpossibleforyouto
directlyentertheshelflifeexpirationdate.
Thisdatethatisenteredorcalculatedduringthegoodsreceiptisthennotedinthequantthatiscreatedinthe
storagebin.Ifyouaddstocktoanexistingquantinastoragebin,theshelflifeexpirationdateofthenew
quantitythatisaddedislost.
