State of
Academic

Writing

in the Philippine Context

by Jalisa De Leon and Alexandria Mae Macaspac

Writing an English Academic Paper seems to be easy. There are just certain
requirements and standards that needs to be considered. But why some of
us, in particular the Filipinos who is known for speaking English fluently has a
difficulty in writing an academic paper?
Filipinos, especially the millennials or the teenagers tends to be lazy. In which
that behavior became one of the factors why Filipinos are having difficulties
in terms of academic writing. The laziness that occurs in their system, makes
them dumb and do nothing about their environment. But on the bigger scale,
the lack of fluency or practice in English is the main factor that affects the
writing skills. Several of the Filipinos, have a problem with their grammars;
and maybe some of the Filipinos do not take the language seriously which
results to them (Filipinos) being English Carabao. Upon that they felt
anxious upon doing a mistake, and then they started refusing to speak in
English anymore, which again affects their writing. Also, Filipinos also tend to
belittle themselves and instead of trying their best, they asks somebody to
provide for them.
With that, Filipinos current state in academic writing becomes critical
because of the stated problems above. But then, if only they would strive
and they would take serious action regarding their English language, they
might improve and do better in terms of academic writing.
