Vocabulary Lesson

a. What was the objective of the lesson?

a. After introduction of book and vocabulary through class discussion, students will
be able to activate prior knowledge and better understand definitions by creating
vocabulary frames.

b. How did the students demonstrate their understanding of the content presented? Provide
specific examples from the lesson and student work to support your analysis.
a. The student was able to demonstrate their understanding/learning of the content
presented in four different ways.
i. First, when given a vocabulary words definition, the student was able to
write the word on their vocabulary frame card and the definition at the top
right corner.
ii. Second, student was able to write a short definition that was the opposite
of the correct meaning.
iii. Third, student was able to write a creative sentence including the word at
the bottom left corner.
iv. Fourth, student was able to draw a picture describing the vocabulary word
at the bottom right corner.
b. The student demonstrated their understanding by completing the vocabulary
frame as it helped them define and understand their given vocabulary word. They
were able to have discussion with me about why they put the answers they did on
their frame.

c. To what extent did the lesson, including instructional strategies, learning activities,
materials, resources, and technology, help to facilitate student learning? How does the
evidence you collected support this finding?
a. The specific learning strategy that was used in this lesson was one-on-one
instruction of the activity and discussion while completing the assignment.
Instead of making the vocabulary frame for the student, they were asked to create
their own note card (frame) and walk through each step as I guided them by
asking questions. They were already given an example and their own vocabulary
word and definition to help start them in the process. This strategy showed
success in that the student was able to stay engaged the whole time by discussing
with me why they put the answers they did on their frame and completing it
correctly.
b. This specific learning activity of creating and completing a vocabulary frame
allowed the student to better understand the meaning and purpose of their given

vocabulary as they were engaged the whole time, asking/answering questions, and
were able to successfully complete the activity correctly.

d. How could you use your data analysis of this lesson and the evidence of student learning
to guide your planning for future lessons? Provide specific examples supported by data.
a. After teaching this lesson, I am now more aware of how helpful it is for students
to create lexicon type organizers in order to help them better understand the
meaning and context of vocabulary words. I am able to support my findings by
having evidence of completed vocabulary frames by my student throughout this
lesson. In order to make sure the student fully understand the lexicon they created
and the definition of the word, we reviewed their completed vocabulary frame by
having the student read to me each section.
b. This lesson allowed for students to have four different visuals to support their
understanding of the vocabulary word given.

e. Give a personal reflection of what you felt went well and what you would change the
next time you taught this lesson?
a. I feel as though this lesson went really well. I thought the idea of having the
student create their own guided lexicon instead of giving them a worksheet was
very helpful to them. Since they had to create it and walk through it themselves
with only guided help from me, they were able to have a better grasp on how to
truly define and understand vocabulary words. I think if I were to change
anything for a future lesson similar to this one, I would first have students look up
a dictionary definition of the word first instead of me just giving it to them first. I
feel as though this adjustment would give the students an even better
understanding since they had to discover it on their own and activate more
background knowledge. I plan on using this instructional strategy and learning
activity in the future when teaching vocabulary.
