TILE CARPETING
PART 1 - GENERAL
Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.01

necessary for the complete supply and installation of tufted cut & loop carpet tiles.

SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. Include manufacturer's written data
on physical characteristics, durability, and fade resistance. Include installation
recommendations for each type of substrate.
B. Shop Drawings: Show the following:
1.
Columns, doorways, enclosing walls or partitions, built-in cabinets, and locations
where cutouts are required in carpet tiles.
2.
Carpet tile type, color, and dye lot.
3.
Type of subfloor.
4.
Type of installation.
5.
Pattern of installation.

C. Samples: For each of the following products and for each color and texture required.
Label each with manufacturers name, material description, color, pattern and
designation indicated on drawings and in schedule.
1.
Carpet Tiles: Full size samples of each tile type selected.
2.
Exposed Edge, transition and other accessory stripping: 300 mm long samples.
D. Certification: Submit manufacturers certificate stating that materials furnishing comply
with specified requirements. Include supporting certified laboratory testing data
indicating that material meets specified test requirements.
E. Maintenance: A complete Flooring Maintenance Program shall be individually prepared
by the manufacturer in order to afford the highest appearance; longest wear life and
appreciable savings in operating budgets. This shall cover the type of equipment,
chemicals and cleaning techniques needed to properly maintain the appearance of the
carpet tiles and to assure its maximum wear life with a minimum life cycle cost. Submit
copies to Employer and the Engineer.
1.04

QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in carpet tile manufacturing with a minimum of ten

(10) continuous years of documented experience.
1.
Submit a list of at least five (5) installations that have been in use for a minimum
of three (3) years using carpet tiles similar to what is specified in this document.
Provide contact name and numbers.
B. Installer Qualifications: An experienced installer who is specialized in laying modular tile
carpeting with a minimum of five years experience and approved by the Manufacturer.
C. Testing: Submit certified test reports for Fire Performance Characteristics and
electrostatic propensity. Provide carpet tiles that are identified to that tested for the
following fire performance requirements, according to test method indicated by UL or
other testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.
1.
Flammability: Passing Flooring Radiant Panel Class 1 test in accordance with
ASTM E 648.
2.
Surface Burning Characteristics: Testing in accordance with ASTM E 662 NBS
Smoke Chamber, less than 450.
D. Mockups: Before installing carpet tile, build mockups of at least 15 sqm in surface area
to verify selections made under sample submittals to demonstrate aesthetic effects and
set quality standards for materials and execution.
1.
Locate mock-up in the location and of the size indicated or, if not indicated, as
directed by the Engineer.
2.
Build Mock-up to the satisfaction of the Engineer. If the required standard is not
achieved, the Contractor shall replace (at the contractors cost) until the required
standard is achieved as judged by the Engineer
3.
Demonstrate the proposed range of aesthetic effects and workmanship.
4.
Obtain written approval of mock-up from the Engineer before starting work.

Maintain mock-ups during construction in an undisturbed condition as a standard

for judging the completed Work.
Approved mockups in an undisturbed condition at the time of Substantial
Completion may become part of the completed Work if approved by the
engineer.

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver materials in original bundles bearing brand name and identification of

manufacturer or supplier.
B. Store materials inside, under cover and keep dry and protected from damage from
construction traffic and other causes.
C. The carpet tiles and adhesive shall be conditioned whenever possible in a dry space at
a minimum temperature of 18oC and relative humidity between 10/65% for at least 48
hours before installation.
1.06

PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Coordinate installation of carpet tiles with the work of other trades before preparations
for projects substantial completion. Delay installation until space enclosures and other
general finish work have been completed; and until continuing traffic in carpeted areas
will be minimal
B. Comply with CRI 104, Section 7.2, "Site Conditions; Temperature and Humidity" and
Section 7.12, "Ventilation."
C. Environmental Limitations: Do not install carpet tiles until wet work in spaces is
complete and dry, and ambient temperature and humidity conditions are maintained at
the levels indicated for Project when occupied for its intended use.
1.
Areas where the work of this Section are to be installed shall have a minimum
temperature of 20oC and maximum relative humidity of 65% maintained for not
less than 72 hours prior to installation, during installation, and for not less than 72
hours after completion of installation. A minimum temperature of 10oC shall be
maintained thereafter
D. Do not install carpet tiles over concrete slabs until slabs have cured and are sufficiently
dry to bond with adhesive and concrete slabs have pH range recommended by carpet
tile manufacturer.
E. Where demountable partitions or other items are indicated for installation on top of
carpet tiles, install carpet tiles before installing these items.
1.07

EXTRA MATERIALS

A. Furnish extra materials equal to 3.5 percent of Bills of Quantity for each type of carpet
tile that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for
storage and identified with labels describing contents.

1.08

WARRANTY

A. Special Warranty for Carpet Tiles: Written warranty signed by Contractor and Carpet
Manufacturer agreeing to replace carpet tiles that do not comply with requirements or
that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.
1.
Failures include, but are not limited to, more than 10 percent loss of face fiber,
edge raveling, snags, runs, loss of tuft bind strength, excess static discharge,
and delamination
2.
Warranty Period: Five (5) years from date of Substantial Completion.

D. Uniformity: All carpet tiles of one type and color, which will be visible together when
laid, shall be from one batch to ensure consistency of appearance.
2.03

INSTALLATION ACCESSORIES

A. Trowelable Leveling and Patching Compounds: Latex-modified, hydraulic-cementbased formulation provided or recommended by carpet tile manufacturer.
B. Adhesives: Water-resistant, mildew-resistant, nonstaining, pressure-sensitive type to
suit products and subfloor conditions indicated, that complies with flammability
requirements for installed carpet tile and is recommended by carpet tile manufacturer for
releasable installation. Adhesive shall be anti-static treated.

VOC Limits : Provide adhesives that comply with the following limits for VOC
content when tested according to ASTM D 5116:
a.
Total VOCs: 10.00 mg/sq. m x h.
b.
Formaldehyde: 0.05 mg/sq. m x h.
c.
2-Ethyl-1-Hexanol: 3.00 mg/sq. m x h.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01

EXAMINATION

A. Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with
requirements for maximum moisture content, alkalinity range, installation tolerances,
and other conditions affecting carpet tile performance. Examine carpet tile for type,
color, pattern, and potential defects.
B. Concrete Subfloors: Verify that concrete slabs comply with ASTM F 710 and the
following:
1.
Slab substrates are dry and free of curing compounds, sealers, hardeners, and
other materials that may interfere with adhesive bond. Determine adhesion and
dryness characteristics by performing bond and moisture tests recommended by
carpet tile manufacturer.
2.
Subfloors are free of cracks, ridges, depressions, scale, and foreign deposits.
C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.02

PREPARATION

A. General: Comply with CRI 104, Section 6.2, "Site Conditions; Floor Preparation," and
with carpet tile manufacturer's written installation instructions for preparing substrates
indicated to receive carpet tile installation.
B. Use trowelable leveling and patching compounds, according to manufacturer's written
instructions, to fill cracks, holes, depressions 3mm wide or wider, and protrusions more
than 0.8mm in substrates unless more stringent requirements are required by
manufacturer's written instructions.
C. Remove coatings, including curing compounds, and other substances that are
incompatible with adhesives and that contain soap, wax, oil, or silicone, without using
solvents. Use mechanical methods recommended in writing by carpet tile manufacturer.
D. Clean metal substrates of grease, oil, soil and rust, and prime if directed by adhesive
manufacturer. Rough sand painted metal surfaces and remove loose paint. Sand
aluminum surfaces, to remove metal oxides, immediately before applying adhesive.
E. Broom and vacuum clean substrates to be covered immediately before installing carpet
tile.
3.03

INSTALLATION

A. General: Comply with CRI 104, Section 14, "Carpet Modules," and with carpet tile
manufacturer's written installation instructions.
B. Installation Method: As recommended in writing by carpet tile manufacturer.
C. Extend carpet tile into toe spaces, door reveals, closets, open-bottomed obstructions,
removable flanges, alcoves, and similar openings.

D. Maintain reference markers, holes, and openings that are in place or marked for future
cutting by repeating on finish flooring as marked on subfloor. Use nonpermanent,
nonstaining marking device.
E. Install pattern parallel to walls and borders.
F. Stagger joints of carpet tiles so carpet tile grid is offset from access flooring panel grid.
Do not fill seams of access flooring panels with carpet adhesive; keep seams free of
adhesive.
3.04

CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. Perform the following operations immediately after installing carpet tile:

1.
Remove excess adhesive, seam sealer, and other surface blemishes using
cleaner recommended by carpet tile manufacturer.
2.
Remove yarns that protrude from carpet tile surface.
3.
Vacuum carpet tile using commercial machine with face-beater element.
B. Protect carpet tile against damage from construction operations and placement of
equipment and fixtures during the remainder of construction period. Use protection
methods indicated or recommended in writing by carpet tile manufacturer.

Provide contact name and numbers.
B. Installer Qualifications: An experienced installer who is certified by manufacturer. All
Carpet, Carpet pad, and required accessories, shall be installed using experienced,
skilled workmen to the highest standard of workmanship. The finished appearance of
the installed Carpet shall be free from streaks, wrinkles, mismatched patterns, or any
other defects due to faulty workmanship.
C. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Carpet and pad shall meet requirements of local
codes where applicable. Provide products with the specified characteristics, as

determined by testing identical products per ASTM E 648 by an acceptable testing and
inspecting agency.
D. Mockups: Before installing carpet, install mockups in the location and of size as
directed for each type of carpet installation required to demonstrate aesthetic effects
and qualities of materials and execution.

directed by the Engineer.
2.

DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. General: Comply with CRI 104, Section 5 Storage and Handling.

PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. General: Comply with CRI 104, Section 6.1, "Site Conditions; Temperature and
Humidity."
B. Environmental Limitations: Do not install carpet until wet work in spaces is complete
and dry, and ambient temperature and humidity conditions are maintained at the levels
indicated for Project when occupied for its intended use.
C. The Contractor shall be responsible for taking accurate job-site measurements for all
dimensions related to the work prior to placing orders for carpet.
D. Examine all conditions pertaining to the installation of Carpet and provide all coordination as required to achieve the proper and timely completion of the installation.
E. Subfloor shall be inspected to determine the special care required to make it a suitable
foundation for carpet.
F. Substrate shall be cured, clean and dry. It shall be free of paint, dirt, grease, oil and
other contaminants.
G. To minimize wrinkling and buckling, carpet should be unrolled, allowed to relax, and
ventilated with the induction of fresh air for a minimum of 24 hours.
H. Where other items are indicated for installation on top of carpet, install carpet before
installing these items.

INSTALLATION ACCESSORIES

A. Trowelable Leveling and Patching Compounds: Latex-modified, hydraulic-cementbased formulation provided by or recommended by Carpet manufacturer/cushion.
B. Tackless Carpet Stripping: Water-resistant plywood in strips as required to match
cushion thickness and that comply with CRI 104, Section 11.3.
C. Adhesives: Water-resistant, mildew-resistant, nonstaining type to suit products and
subfloor conditions indicated, that complies with flammability requirements for installed
carpet and that is recommended by the carpet and carpet cushion manufacturer.

VOC Limits: Provide adhesives that comply with the following limits for VOC
content when tested according to ASTM D 5116:

2-Ethyl-1-Hexanol: 3.00 mg/sq. m x h.

D. Metal edge strips: Stainless Steel edge strips of height required to protect exposed edge
of carpet, and of maximum lengths to minimize running joints.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01

EXAMINATION

A. Examine substrates, areas, and conditions for compliance with requirements for
maximum moisture content, alkalinity range, installation tolerances, and other conditions
affecting carpet performance. Verify that substrates and conditions are satisfactory for
carpet installation and comply with requirements specified.
B. Concrete Subfloors: Verify that concrete slabs comply with ASTM F 710 and the
following:
1.
Slab substrates are dry and free of curing compounds, sealers, hardeners, and
other materials that may interfere with adhesive bond. Determine adhesion and
dryness characteristics by performing bond and moisture tests recommended by
the carpet manufacturer.
2.
Subfloors are free of cracks, ridges, depressions, scale, and foreign deposits.
3.
Holes and Protrusions: Any holes greater than 3mm in diameter must be patched
regardless of floor surface. All protrusions in excess of 0.8mm must be
smoothed.
3.02

PREPARATION

A. General: Comply with CRI 104, Section 6.2, "Site Conditions; Floor Preparation," and
carpet manufacturer's written installation instructions for preparing substrates indicated
to receive carpet installation.
B. Use trowelable leveling and patching compounds, according to manufacturer's written
instructions, to fill cracks, holes, and depressions in substrates. Concrete floors shall be
sealed using non-silicone sealers.
C. Broom and vacuum clean substrates to be covered immediately before installing carpet.
After cleaning, examine substrates for moisture, alkaline salts, carbonation, or dust.
Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.03

INSTALLATION

A. Installation: Comply with CRI 104 and carpet manufacturers written recommendations.
B. Comply with carpet manufacturer's written recommendations for seam locations and
direction of carpet; maintain uniformity of carpet direction and lay of pile. At doorways,
center seams under the door in closed position.
C. Cut and fit carpet to butt tightly to vertical surfaces, permanent fixtures, and built-in
furniture including cabinets, pipes, outlets, edgings, thresholds, and nosings. Bind or
seal cut edges as recommended by carpet manufacturer.
D. Provide cut-outs as indicated for floor outlets.
E. Extend carpet into toe spaces, door reveals, closets, open-bottomed obstructions,
removable flanges, alcoves, and similar openings.

F. All patterned carpet shall be matched exactly at seams.

G. Maintain reference markers, holes, and openings that are in place or marked for future
cutting by repeating on finish flooring as marked on subfloor. Use nonpermanent,
nonstaining marking device.
H. Install carpet edge guard where edge of carpet is exposed; anchor guards to substrate.
3.04

CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. Perform the following operations immediately after installing carpet:

1.
Remove excess adhesive, seam sealer, and other surface blemishes using
cleaner recommended by carpet manufacturer.
2.
Remove yarns that protrude from carpet surface.
3.
Vacuum carpet using commercial machine with face-beater element.
B. Protect installed carpet to comply with CRI 104, Section 15, "Protection of Indoor
Installations."
C. Protect carpet against damage from construction operations and placement of
equipment and fixtures during the remainder of construction period. Use protection
methods indicated or recommended in writing by carpet manufacturer.
