Integrated Circuit (IC)

The Definition of Integrated Circuit (IC)

Integrated Circuit is an electronic component consists of transistors, diodes,
resistors and capacitors that are combined into an electronic circuit in a small
package. Integrated circuit was categorized in semiconductor active component
because does need current for doing the function.
Material of IC
Integrated circuit can be made of semiconductor material such as silicon (Si) and
germanium (Ge). Basically in electronics circuits, there are many function of
Integrated Circuit. For example: IC used as amplifier, IC used as voltage regulator
in power supply circuit, and some types of IC also can be used as logic gates.
The Types of Integrated Circuit (IC)
In general integrated circuit can be classified into many types, then if we classify
integrated circuit based on the function, the integrated circuit can be divided into 2
types, namely :
1. Linear Integrated Circuit (Linear IC)
Linear IC or we can called as Analog IC is a type of integrated circuit
that is most widely used in electronic circuits. Analog IC is an IC that
composed by several linear circuits and operates by using sinusoidal signals. In
general, Linear IC work using sinusoidal signals and serves as an amplifier.
Linear IC does not perform logic functions such as IC-TTL and C-MOS,
because do not work using square signal. In electronics circuit Linear IC can be
used as power amplifier, signal amplifier, operational amplifier (op-amp),
microwave amplifier, radio frequency receiver, voltage comparator, and
voltage regulator.
2. Digital Integrated Circuit (Digital IC)
Digital Integrated Circuit is basically a series of switching circuit that has
input and output voltage only in two state that "high" and "low" or in binary
code is denoted by "1" and "0". Digital IC work using square signals that there
are only two conditions, namely logic 0 or 1 and serves as a switch.

In electronics circuit Digital IC can be used as logic gates, flip-flop,

counter,

timer,

multiplexer,

memory,

clock,

microprocessor,

and

microcontroller.
Then if we classify integrated circuit based on the body of IC, the integrated circuit
can be divided into many types, namely :
1. Dual in line IC
Dual in line IC is the type of IC that has terminals on the right and the left sides
of the body of IC. This type of IC can be formed from Linear IC and Digital
IC. For example : IC CA-3140, LM-741, NE-555, and Logic gates IC 7400,
7404, 7408, etc.
2. Single in line IC
Single in line IC is the type of IC that has terminals only in one side of the
body of IC, that looks like a comb. For example : IC AN-2140 and IC T-8736
3. Flat IC
Flat IC is the type of IC that formed very thin, and there are many terminals on
the top, bottom, right, and left of the body of the IC. This type of IC usually is
widely available in CD player or computer.
4. Top Hat IC
Top Hat IC is the type of IC which is shaped like a transistor, this type of IC
usually used for the regulator stabilizer circuit. For example : Regulator IC
78xx and 79xx. In the type of IC, IC 78xx usually used for produce positive
voltage, and IC 79xx used for produce negative voltage.
The Application of Integrated Circuit (IC)
In general Integrated Circuit has many function in the electronic circuit, such
as : IC can be used as power amplifier, signal amplifier, operational amplifier (opamp), and voltage regulator. And then some types of IC also can be used as logic
gates, flip-flop, timer and counter, microprocessor, and microcontroller.
And now, I will tell you one of the application of Integrated circuit that name
Power Supply. Power supply is an electronic circuit that serves to convert
alternating current into direct current. Power supply has four main parts in order to
produce a stable DC current. The fourth part of them is Transformers, Rectifiers,
Filters and Voltage Regulator.

In general, the power supply is always equipped with a voltage regulator. The
purpose of the installation of a voltage regulator in the power supply is to stabilize
the output voltage when the input voltage changes occur on the power supply.
Another function of the voltage regulator is for the protection of the occurrence of a
short circuit on the load.
One method to produce a stable DC output voltage is to use IC 78XX IC's for
produce positive voltage, and IC 79XX to produce negative voltage in the Voltage
Regulator system.
