Abstract

Connecting rod is one of the important parts of an IC engine. Function of the connecting rod is to
transmit linear motion of piston to crankshaft and thereby converting linear motion to rotary
motion. This is one of the components in IC engine which is subjected to fatigue loads. Hence
design for connecting rod should be done in such a way that rod should withstand high number
of fatigue cycles without a failure. The properties of materials which can withstand high cycles
will be readily available in journals published by material science engineers. Main properties of
any connecting rod should remain rigid even after high loading and material should be of light to
reduce inertia forces.
In the present study High Strength Steel is considered for connecting rod has it as got good
tensile and fatigue properties compared to regular steel material. The material is selected based
on the strength ability. Its fatigue life is determined by using ANSYS software and it is validated
with the theoretical results. S-N approach is used for determining its fatigue life.

FEA analysis is done which helps us to understand the state of stress in connecting rod
during investigation. Fatigue strength and fatigue life are obtained by using S-N approach.
Finite element modeling is done using CATIA V5 software and fatigue analysis is done using
ANSYS software.
