9 Route:
“SLANT”
•The “Slant” is a versatile route that allows us to attack two
different ways within the same route, giving us options
EARLY and LATE in the play. This gives it a great chance to
get open against all types of coverage!
•The FRONTSIDE is our EARLY side, and gives us a 2-on-1
vs. the flat defender with a Slant (Outside) and an Arrow
(Inside)
•The BACKSIDE is our LATE or LONG side, providing a 2-
on-1 on the safety with a ‘Lookie Post’ and ‘Quick Post’.
•The Slant is designed to hold up against all coverages, but it is especially effective
against Cover 2, Cover 1, and can be a deadly weapon against Blitz Cover 0 because
we exploit the deep hole in the middle!
•The Slant is a good way to convert 3rd and medium to long without having to protect
for a long time, and is outstanding in ‘Base’ situations or in the Red Zone when
married with Play Action!

KEYS to a successful play: TAGS/VARIATIONS

• Receivers get good spacing starting with their splits!
• •“Horn”
Frontside Inside forces a QUICK decision by the flat player!
•“Mirror”
• Outside receivers use good eye contact & nods to get separation! •50-51 Action
• The QB throws ON TIME, THROUGH WINDOWS.

Between 7 and 9 yards, nod, plant off the outside foot, and snap into the window inside the flat defender, staying THIN.
QB: Pre-snap frontside to see how clean the read is and where the danger player is. If you like the leverage on the CB

the spacing of the danger player, start frontside, keying the flat defender and hitting the Slant off his earhole as soon as he
turns his shoulders. If he backs straight up, give the ball to the Arrow quickly; think anchor step for both throws if you can. If
you don’t like what you see on the frontside, pop back two steps & hit the Quick Post in the window with a 2-ball. If you start
backside, go 5 steps from the beginning, stare
