Introduction

LIVE STREAM

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it
(Kings James Version, Proverbs 22:6). This Bible scripture holds a powerful place in the lives of
Christians that are God fearing individuals. It comes with true testament that one who has faith in
a higher power dedicates there time in reading scriptures and congregates with others of similar
beliefs to learn more about the Bible. Then there are others that are not able to partake in these
activities due to personal limitations. For many churches this is an obstacle that they are willing
to explore and are determined to find a solution.
Eight- to eighteen-year-olds spend more time with media than in any other activity
besides (maybe) sleepingan average of more than 7 hours a day, seven days a week (Kaiser
Family Foundation, 2010). As this new generation of tech savvy believers are starting to rise up
the church must step into the 21 st century of technological-followers. Dr. Michael Rich, a
pediatrician at Childrens Hospital Boston who directs the Center on Media and Child Health,
said that with media use so ubiquitous, it was time to stop arguing over whether it was good or
bad and accept it as part of childrens environment, like the air they breathe, the water they
drink and the food they eat (Lewin, 2010). As part of this growing population the church is in
need to move forward by incorporating more technology within the confines of their
environment. Many people within our congregations are visual learners instead of
auditory...When they see words and images in addition to hearing them they will actually
remember them much more clearly (Mike, 2008). In the mist of these changes the church will
need to implement Wi-Fi accessibility to meet the desire of the technology savvy members. By
adding technology such members can use their devices to interact with online resources and gain
more knowledge during conference or Bible studies. Another idea to enhance the way technology
is used within the church is to broadcast live. This will benefit those members that are not able to

LIVE STREAM

attend services on a regular basis. Making this online option for members may increase the
amount of other non-members to join the broadcast and experience a church service in the
comfort of their own homes. Technology is a resource that we can use for Gods gloryThrough
Facebook and Twitter or through a church blog, one can easily communicate directly with the
people in the congregation, throughout the day and week (Stetzer, 2014). The focus of this
project will be to develop a training to teach church leaders how to use Facebook Live to stream
the church services and other events to reach a broader audience.
Needs Analysis
Templo Sinai Pentecostal Church has been in transition of integrating more technology
into their program. A past project has been laid out to incorporate access to Wi-Fi so the Bible
study department could use more online resources to reiterate lessons. Recently the church
officials noticed that there was a slight decline in attendance during some services. It was noted
that some members were homebound and could not make services for illness and or personal
reasons. It was suggested that making video and sending it to those that cannot be present, may
resolve this problem. Another idea that had been taken into consideration was to broadcast the
service/ event live. This option may be the best fit for the church due to many members are on
social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Facebook Live can connect us to
hundreds of people who have never been to our church (Creitz, 2016).
Learner Analysis
Rev. Jose Gonzalez has identified the audience for this project to have 5 members in good
standing within the church (personal communication, November 1, 2016). The target group
consists of 3 youth members and 2 Board of Trustee officials. Their ages range from 18-45. All

these members have access to a smartphone and or mobile device. The target group must have a
current Facebook account to participate in this project. The following is some information on the

Environment Analysis
Templo Sinai Pentecostal Church is a non-profit religious organization established back
in 1994 (Rev. Jose Gonzalez, personal communication, November 1, 2016). The stakeholders
that are interested in Facebook Live are Rev. Gonzalez, Board of Trustees, Deacons and Elders.
The intended interest in this project is to allow the church access to those members that are
unable to congregate. Another interest for the church is to reach the lives of other social media
friends that may be hesitant in entering a church or those that have never had an experience. The

LIVE STREAM

greatest benefit of Facebook Live is not for the members but for their unchurched friends and
family that have the potential to reach (Creitz, 2016).
The church building has been remolded and can accommodate a large capacity of
members to congregate for services and events in the sanctuary (Rev. Gonzalez, personal
interview, November 1, 2016). There is also a project in its culmination where classrooms have
been created in the basement of the church for future Bible study classes and other events
(Nathaniel Torres, personal interview, November 2, 2016). A synchronous training is the type of
method that will be used through this process. The idea of this project is to gather the target
group and work together in creating videos of church service/events to get comfortable behind
the camera or mobile device that will be used. The target group must be aware that a strong WiFi signal is present for a clear broadcast. They must also make sure that their Facebook account
and application is updated to avoid any disturbance. While on Facebook other social media sites
could be connected to keep friends and non-church friends aware of the live broadcast.
Familiarizing themselves with the location of the live stream button in the Facebook account and
how to position the camera is crucial. A tri pod or a mobile device stand is recommended to
make sure the camera is steady. It important that all members of the target group are present for
all training to grasp a full understanding and knowledge in using Facebook live.
Task Analysis
The following are the steps/skills the target group will need to learn and master;
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Identify battery life on mobile device

Recognize and make sure access to a strong Wi-Fi signal
Enter into Facebook or another social media account with ease
Find and click on the go live button
Make sure the camera is in the correct positon facing the service/event
Use a tri pod or mobile stand for stability

LIVE STREAM

7. Observe broadcast closely monitoring lighting, sound, clarity

8. Engage live viewers by commenting back on the live feed
Situational Analysis
Some constraints that may arise for Facebook live could be that the whole system shuts
down and nothing could be broadcasted. If this were to occur the group could retain video
footage of the service/event offline then broadcast when system is back connected. Another
barrier that may occur is no Wi-Fi signal and battery life of mobile devices is weak. In a quick
thinking situation the devices may be plugged into an outlet to produce more usage.
Broadcasting in a low light setting and high volume microphones can affect the project and
become a barrier. A way to overcome this barrier would be to change footage location and
determine which view is most convenient.
At that time a budget of $500 would be identified to establish all cover cost of a new
church mobile device if it is necessary. Each target voluntarily participant is using their own
mobile devices to perform a live broadcast. As far as a time frame this project should be
completed within a month time. In case any problems transpire the project will have the option to
extend another 2 weeks after completion date. If the project is unsuccessful, due to technological
issues, the church will take position and purchase a tablet to support the training.
Media/ Technology Analysis
The technology that is required for Facebook live is preferred to be mobile devices since
they are easier to manage. There are other devices that might be used to reiterate a good quality
live stream broadcast. The other online live broadcast sources are Twitter Periscope and YouTube
live. These will be used to differentiate and compare videos quality.

LIVE STREAM

Development Schedule
The estimated schedule for this training activity is approximately 30-32 hours spread out
within a month time lapse. Church leaders will have a 2 hour face to face hands on lesson
training once a week to establish some background knowledge of the Facebook live broadcast.
The other part of the physical training will consist of church leaders partaking in 2 hour sessions
three times a week during worship services. This will allow the church leaders to use the skills
they have learned from the face to face session. Within the design and developmental phases of
this project would be the most times consumed around 20 hours because of making sure the
learners have grasped the concepts to create a visually pleasing live stream. During the other
phases to address the ADDIE model depending on the learners pace could determine more or less
time for each.
Course Learning Objectives
Object #1: After completing the training activity, learners will be able to successfully identify
appropriate equipment needed to livestream a broadcast.
Object #2: After completing the training activity, learners will be able to successfully create a
Facebook account and add at least 25 new followers.
Object #3: After completing the training activity, learners will be able to record a self-driven
video that presents interviews of at least 3 different people and locations.
Objective #4: After completing the training activity, learners will be able to identify key
locations and positions to best record a live stream broadcast to its optimum precision.

LIVE STREAM

Objective #5: After completing the training activity, learners will generate a live stream
broadcast with professional quality.
Lesson Structure
For the learners to understand how Facebook live is used the appropriate equipment is
identified at first to expose them of the materials at hand. This process will allow the learners to
take initiative in becoming more aware of what equipment he/she will likely feel more
comfortable with to complete the final task. As the learner steps into manipulating the
equipment, their next step is to create a Facebook account if one is not yet set up. For the nature
of using Facebook live an active account is crucial to the overall outcome of this training. As
Facebook users, the learner will invite friends and family to connect with them to build up the
number of followers on this site. The reason for this action is to have a wide range of followers
and make connections through Facebook to promote the future live stream events. Once the
learners has an established following through Facebook and has identified the equipment the
next lesson is in creating a self-driven video. The purpose of this step is to allow the leaner to
develop the skill of recording and grasp a visual component. This may prevent the learner from
becoming anxious while recoding a live broadcast. While the learner establishes a better
understanding of recording he/she will pay close attention to what location/positons is best in
recording. To better use the equipment the learner will move around to capture a more vibrant
shot. Once the learner has gained suitable understanding in each area, the final step will be to
perform a Facebook live stream broadcast. It is pivotal that the learner takes advantage of these
steps to create an eye-catching video. The more visually engaging you can be, the more you can
entice people to stick around...That means keeping the camera moving and not just sitting in one
place (Kolowich, 2016).

LIVE STREAM

Activities
With Facebook Live you can use your phone to share a moment instantly with the people
you care about This means your friends, family or fans can be there with you and you can
respond to their comments and see their reactions (Simo, 2016)...Some of the activities that will
take place for learners to obtain a good understanding of Facebook live are as follows;
Using identified equipment to become more comfortable for future live broadcast
If smartphone being used, learner must be aware of strong Wi-Fi connection is on at all
times
Keep attentive to the battery life of the equipment
Make sure access to Facebook account is current
Take notice of the live stream button in the Facebook account
Create more followers through Facebook by accepting friends and family
Produce a practice recoding video to develop behind the camera skills
Make video visually engaging
Keep track of video not to over extend time (Broadcast for at least 10 minutes
Pay close attention to positioning the equipment to generate clear videos
Monitor volume control and lighting while recording
By allowing the learners to interact with the equipment will be one way of keeping them engaged
in the training. Providing them with some YouTube and Facebook videos of others can elaborate
their understanding on what the end result will look like. Once the learner has felt a new skilled
learned they will be encouraged to take initiative and perform for the group. These activities are
a direct reflection onto what skill is needed to executing a Facebook live stream broadcast.
Assessments

LIVE STREAM

For this training the learner will need to be assessed while each learning objective is
being understood. The reason for this process is to establish a clear outlook that the learner is
grasping the full concept of the training. Formative assessment provides feedback and
information during the instructional process, while learning is taking place, and while learning is
occurring (Northern Illinois University, n.d.). Observations are one type of assessment that will
take place during the learners training. While the training is a step by step format, a group
discussion is another way assessment will take place. Summative assessment takes place after the
learning has been completed and provides information and feedback that sums up the teaching
and learning process (Northern Illinois University, n.d.). Once the learner has completed the
training and has been able to generate their own Facebook live stream event a more summative
assessment will take place. In this aspect, viewers feedback and comments will hold in high
regard to the assessment of the learner. Another important assessment would be considered for
learners to evaluate the training. This would allow the learners to identify if he/she received a
full understanding. Also, this provides the instructor with a better view on how effective was the
overall training. Hanna and Dettmer (2004) suggest that you should strive to develop a range of
assessments strategies that match all aspects of their instructional plans (cited by Northern
Illinois University, n.d.).
Implementation
For this Facebook live stream broadcast training will be presented to the designated
individuals that have been identified from the beginning of this project. The senior pastor of the
church Templo Sinai will be the pilot tester for this training. The pilot testing will take place a
month before the actual training will to solidify that all the material and information has been
acknowledged appropriately to create the most appealing live stream broadcast.

LIVE STREAM

Once the testing has been completed the training will be scheduled to begin. The location
of this training will take place at Templo Sinai church. The church has completed the
construction project within the basement and has appointed one of the classrooms to be the
training site. The project manager will be the appointed trainer to deliver this training. Since the
trainer has been the sole creator of this project, there are no further qualifications needed for the
trainer. If there was a situation to arise that the trainer was not able to fulfil the position, then
other measure will be taken. During this matter the right individual that has previous experience
with both training and live stream broadcast would be considered. At that point the training will
be delayed a week to prepare the new trainer.
Prior to the learners arriving at the training site, the trainer must be at the location at least
one hour before training to set up the classroom and make sure all supplies are available. In
preparation, the trainer must have copies of handouts, electronical devices fully charged and WiFi connections open and working. The trainer should have all devices available such as
smartphone, IPads, video cameras, tripods, computers and projectors. If these items are not
present the trainer must contact church electronic department leaders to receive further
assistance.
Evaluations
An important way to evaluate the Facebook live stream broadcast training will be using
the Kirkpatricks model. By identifying these areas will provide both the learner and trainer a
better handle on what worked and didnt work for this training.
The following is a Level 1 Evaluation ~Smile Sheet for Facebook live stream training

6. What would you recommend doing differently? ______________________________
In determining the effectiveness of this training the use of Kirkpatricks Evaluation model
has been identified. In Level 2 the learning aspect is for the learners will be evaluated for their
learning through the use of simulations of activities. In providing opportunities for the learners to
engage in physical contact with video graphing will help them make connections to what was
discussed during the training. For level 3, would be evaluating the behavior of the learner and
how they transferred the information. For this training the learners will have the options to
create a first video one arriving to the training course and later on will create another. Comparing

LIVE STREAM

both videos and future videos of the learners will give more insight in how the information
transferred. For level 4 in how effective was this training will be an ongoing evaluation. Since
the training is for the learners to establish a more in-depth understanding of live streaming and
continue to use these skills. Through this ongoing evaluation, viewers online feedback will be
very important to determine if this training was successful. By engaging the viewers this will
give them the opportunity to discuss how they felt during the live stream and provide us with a
clear view of what can be improved.
Summary
Jesus said to the disciples, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation
(New International Version, Mark 16:15). If the church is serious about engaging their members
and are searching for new technological ways to outreach then a live broadcast may be the way
to go. As this 21st century generation becomes technologically savvy the church must embrace
new and creative ways to share the positive message. Taking the church to the next level and
making appropriate accommodating that their members need will benefit their future in many
different ways. The church needs to stay connected to their members not only through telephone
calls or text message but expanding the idea of more interactive engagements through the
integration of technology.
As the church continues to see that technology is a running source that connects many of
its members by taking this direction in training church leaders to use Facebook live is an
forward-thinking accomplishment. Facebook live connect us with hundreds of people who have
never been to our church (Creitz, 2016). So by using Facebook live within the church will help
increase and broaden the churchs reputation in a modern way. In taking this training and having

LIVE STREAM

church leaders participate not only contributes to their growth in learning new technology it also
expands their leadership duties. This is the first step to many more opportunities moving forward
making the church more technology friendly in working for the Lord. As 1 Corinthians 10: 31
says, whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (NIV, 2011).
