Mechanics Set 18

1.
Calculate the period of small oscillations of a cube-shaped physical
pendulum oscillating about one edge. (Refer to the Figure on the left)
2.
A uniform filled-in cube with side s is moving with an initial speed |
and hits a bump at the edge of a table. As a result of hitting the bump the cube
rotates with the bump as pivot. If the initial speed is sufficiently small the
cube will turn up to a maximum angle ; if the initial speed exceed a critical
value u, the cube will fall off the table.
a) Assuming v<u, determine as a function of and known quanitities (e.g. g, s)
b) Determine u.
3. A small disk of mass m and moving with an
initial velocity speed v collides with a bar of mass
M and length l at a distance d from the center of the
bar. Assuming the collision is elastic (i.e. no loss of
kinetic energy), the final velocity and angular
momentum of the bar.
4. A constant density object with mass M, a circular cross-section of outer radius R, and
moment of inertia about the central axis C6} is released from rest on an inclined plane with
angle of inclination . To simplify the analysis assume the coefficient of friction and kinetic
friction are almost equal, <w <S < an neglect the coefficient of rolling friction.
a) During the initial stage of the motion of the object, the object will slide. Determine the
acceleration, total distance traveled, final velocity, final angular velocity, and total time
spent at this stage of the motion.
b) Assuming the coefficient of friction is sufficiently high, there will be a second stage of
the motion of the object wherein the object will roll without slipping.
bi.Determine the speed of the object when it starts to roll without slipping
bii. Determine the acceleration of the object when it is rolling without slipping
c) If the coefficient of friction is too low, the object will never reach the rolling without
slipping stage of motion. What minimum value of the coefficient of friction will ensure
that the object can reach the rolling without slipping stage. Express <^x8x^^ in terms of
C and .
5. Consider a dumbbell formed by two point masses m at the ends of a
massless rod of length 2b. The dumbbell rotates at a fixed inclination
with constant angular velocity 1z about a pivot at the center of the rod as
shown in the figure.
a) Find the kinetic energy of the system
b)Find the angular momentum of the system when
ai.the upper dumbbell is on the yz-plane and y>0,z>0
aii. The upper dumbebell is on the xz-plane and x>0, z>0
c)Find the elements of the inertia tensor of the system when the upper
dumbbell is on the yz-plane and y>0, z>0.
